Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

In this work, we synthesize mesoporous and hollow germanium@carbon nanostructures through simultaneous carbon coating and reduction of a hollow ellipsoidal GeO2 precursor. The formation mechanism of GeO 2 ellipsoids and the ratio of Ge4+ to Sn4+ as the starting materials are also investigated. Compared to the solid ellipsoidal Ge@carbon (Ge@C-3), the hollow ellipsoidal Ge@C-1 sample exhibits better cycling stability (100% capacity retention after 200 cycles at the 0.2 C rate) and higher rate capability (805 mA h g-1 at 20 C) compared to Ge@C-3 due to its unique hollow structure; therefore, this hollow ellipsoidal Ge@carbon can be considered as a …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Boron–nitrogen containing compounds with high hydrogen contents as represented by ammonia borane (NH3BH3) have recently attracted intense interest for potential hydrogen storage applications. One such compound is [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8 with a capacity of 18.2 wt% H. Two safe and efficient synthetic routes to [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8 have been developed for the first time since it was discovered 50 years ago. The new synthetic routes avoid a dangerous starting chemical, tetraborane (B4H10), and afford a high yield. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals N–Hd+…Hd2–B dihydrogen interactions in the [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8?18- crown-6 adduct. Extended strong dihydrogen bonds were observed in pure [(NH3)2BH2]B3H8 through crystal structure solution …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Mixed metal oxides have been attracting more and more attention recently because of their advantages and superiorities, which can improve the electrochemical performance of single metal oxides. These advantages include structural stability, good electronic conductivity, and reversible capacity. In this work, uniform yolk-shelled ZnCo2O4 microspheres were synthesized by pyrolysis of ZnCo-glycolate microsphere precursors which were prepared via a simple refluxing route without any precipitant or surfactant. The formation process of the yolk-shelled microsphere structure during the thermal decomposition of ZnCo-glycolate is discussed, which is mainly based on the heterogeneous contraction caused by non-equilibrium heat treatment. The performances of the as-prepared …

'Laser Chemistry' Synthesis, Physicochemical Properties, And Chemical Processing Of Nanostructured Carbon Foams, Andres Seral-Ascaso, Rosa Garriga, Maria Luisa Sanjuan, Joselito M. Razal, Ruth Lahoz, Mariano Laguna, German F. De La Fuente, Edgar Munoz

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Laser ablation of selected coordination complexes can lead to the production of metal-carbon hybrid materials, whose composition and structure can be tailored by suitably choosing the chemical composition of the irradiated targets. This 'laser chemistry' approach, initially applied by our group to the synthesis of P-containing nanostructured carbon foams (NCFs) from triphenylphosphine-based Au and Cu compounds, is broadened in this study to the production of other metal-NCFs and P-free NCFs. Thus, our results show that P-free coordination compounds and commercial organic precursors can act as efficient carbon source for the growth of NCFs. Physicochemical characterization reveals that NCFs are low-density …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

This paper reports on a facile synthesis method for reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) nanocomposites. The initial step involves the use of graphene oxide to disperse the MWNTs, with subsequent reduction of the resultant graphene oxide/MWNTs composites using l-ascorbic acid (LAA) as a mild reductant. Reduction by LAA preserves the interaction between the rGO sheets and MWNTs. The dispersion-containing rGO/MWNTs composites was characterized and electrophoretically deposited anodically onto glassy carbon electrodes to form high surface area films for capacitance testing. Pseudo capacitance peaks were observed in the rGO/MWNTs composite electrodes, resulting in superior performance with capacitance values up …

Using aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase/suppressor tRNA pairs derived from Methanocaldococcus jannaschii, an Escherichia coli cell-free protein production system affords proteins with site-specifically incorporated unnatural amino acids (UAAs) in high yields through the use of optimized amber suppressor tRNACUA opt and optimization of reagent concentrations. The efficiency of the cell-free system allows the incorporation of trifluoromethyl-phenylalanine using a polyspecific synthetase evolved previously for p-cyanophenylalanine, and the incorporation of UAAs at two different sites of the same protein without any re-engineering of the E. coli cells used to make the cell-free extract.

Large Scale Synthesis Of V-Shaped Rutile Twinned Nanorods, Weigang Lu, Britain Bruner, Gilberto Casillas, Jibao He, Miguel Jose-Yacaman, Patrick J. Farmer

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

V-shaped rutile twinned nanorods (VRTNs) with different aspect ratios were synthesized on large scale using a one-pot organic solvothermal method. Although several different types of VRTNs were produced, (101) twinned nanorods were the major product with minor amounts of (301) twins and straight nanorods. STEM, TEM and XRD characterizations show that [001] is the growth direction of VRTNs, with surfaces dominated by {110} facets. Intermediate formation of both brookite and anatase nanorods provides dual pathways to VRTNs’ growth: one path in which anatase seeds trigger and promote brookite nanorod growth; and a second path in which anatase nanorods are formed …

To further expand the structure–cytotoxic activity relationships of isatin derivatives and to reduce flexibility in substituent groups at nitrogen, 20 analogues incorporating a ring system between the N1 and C7 atoms of isatin were prepared using a variety of synthetic strategies. This yielded pyrroloindole-, pyrroloquinoline-, pyrroloacridine-, pyrrolophenanthridine- and benzopyrrolophenanthridine-based systems with embedded isatin moieties, the latter possessing a novel carbon skeleton. These compounds were subsequently assessed for their in vitro cytotoxicity against human U937 lymphoma cells, with the brominated pyrroloacridine dione 27 showing the most promising activity (IC50 3.01 μM) after 24 h.

The ability of macrocyclic ligands to facilitate formation of dispersions of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was investigated using a combination of absorption spectrophotometry and optical microscopy. Vacuum filtration of aqueous dispersions containing SWNTs and various macrocyclic ligands (derivatised porphyrin, phthalocyanine, cyclodextrin and calixarene) afforded self-supporting membranes known as buckypapers. Microanalytical data and energy dispersive X-ray spectra were obtained for these buckypapers and provided evidence for retention of the macrocyclic ligands within the structure of the membranes. The electrical conductivities of the membranes varied between 30 ± 20 and 220 ± 60 S cm−1, while contact angle analysis revealed they all …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

MgB2 superconductors with unique microstructures were rapidly fabricated at low temperatures, and exhibited significantly improved critical current density (Jc). According to the microstructure observations, the prepared samples consisted of lamellar nano MgB2 grains with many embedded nanoimpurities (about 10 nm). The formation of these lamellar nano MgB2 grains is associated with the presence of a local Mg-Cu liquid at sintering temperatures as low as 575°C. The ball milling treatment of the original powders also plays a positive role in the growth of lamellar grains. Based on an analysis of the relationship between resistivity and temperature, the lamellar nano MgB2 grains …

Synthesis And Preliminary Evaluation Of Amiloride Analogs As Inhibitors Of The Urokinase-Type Plasminogen Activator (Upa), Hayden Matthews, Marie Ranson, Joel Tyndall, Michael J. Kelso

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

A known side-activity of the oral potassium-sparing diuretic drug amiloride is inhibition of the enzyme urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA, Ki = 7 mu M), a promising anticancer target. Several studies have demonstrated significant antitumor/metastasis properties for amiloride in animal cancer models and it would appear that these arise, at least in part, through inhibition of uPA. Selective optimization of amiloride’s structure for more potent inhibition of uPA and loss of diuretic effects would thus appear as an attractive strategy towards novel anticancer agents. The following report is a preliminary structure-activity exploration of amiloride analogs as inhibitors of uPA. A …

Myriocin-Mediated Up-Regulation Of Hepatocyte Apoa-I Synthesis Is Associated With Erk Inhibition, Elias N. Glaros, Woojin Scott Kim, Brett Garner

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Sphingolipids including sphingomyelin have been implicated as potential atherogenic lipids. Studies in apoE (apolipoprotein E)-null mice have revealed that the serine palmitoyltransferase inhibitor myriocin reduces plasma levels of sphingomyelin, ceramide, sphingosine-I-phosphate and glycosphingolipids and that this is associated with potent inhibition of atherosclerosis. Interestingly, hepatic apoA-I (apolipoprotein A-I) synthesis and plasma HDL (high-density lipoprotein)cholesterol levels were also increased in apoE-null mice treated with myriocin. Since myriocin is a known inhibitor of ERK (extracellular-signal-related kinase) phosphorylation, we assessed the possibility that myriocin may be acting to increase hepatic apoA-I production via this pathway. To address this, HepG2 cells and primary mouse …
