The Rio Grande Valley of Southern Texas is a major agricultural region yet has some of the highest hunger rates in the USA. Urbanization and agriculture affect biodiversity, which is well studied, but little is known about how agriculture affects biodiversity in urban areas. We investigated how different urban attributes, including those related to urban farming, impact bird communities in Brownsville and Harlingen, TX, and compared sites that have community gardens to those that do not. Perovskite solar cells (PSC) have emerged as a promising photovoltaic technology in lab scale with a short time of research due to their high power conversion efficiency, simple device fabrication, all solid-state structure and the possibility to ingrate the traditional device into fiber format. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) perovskite solar cell is demonstrated using functionalized carbon nanotube yarn (CNT) as both cathode and anode. We show for a prime power number of parts m that the first differences of partitions into at most m parts can be expressed as a non-negative linear combination of partitions into at most m – 1 parts. To show this relationship, we combine a quasipolynomial construction of p(n,m) with a new partition identity for a finite number of parts. We prove these results by providing combinatorial interpretations of the quasipolynomial of p(n,m) and the new partition identity. In this work, we report synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with an average size of ~6 nm. The aqueous solution of Ag+ ions is reduced using an aqueous extract from orange peel (Citrus Sinensis) at varying pHs. Reduction of Ag+ ions in solution was monitored using UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, and the corresponding surface plasmon resonance of AgNPs at 435 nm. The photocatalytic degradation of simazine (SIM) by Zinc oxide/graphene oxide (ZnO/GO) composites, under visible light irradiation, was investigated to determine various reaction parameters, of initial pH, ZnO loading on GO, and catalyst mass. A pH of 2 was determined to be the optimal reaction pH for all ZnO/GO catalysts. A loading mass of 40mg for the 20 & 30mmol composites; whereas a 10mg mass was determined to be most effective for the 10mmol composite. In this paper we outline a method for obtaining generalized peakon solutions for a cubic Camassa-Holm model originally introduced by Fokas (1995) and recently shown to have a Lax pair representation and bi-Hamiltonian structure by Qiao et al (2012). Amyloid fibrils from milk proteins have recently been the subject of extensive investigations in biophysics. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the dynamics of fibrillation and the mechanical properties of β-LG and β-CN fibers using AFM-Quantitative Nanomechanical Mapping (QNM) and AFM-force spectroscopy. β-LG required one day of heating at 80 °C , pH 2 to fibrillate in solution; β-CN required three days. Using the AFM-QNM mode an average elastic modulus of 4.3 GPa was determined for the β-LG fibers and 3.1 GPa for β-casein fibers. Algal biofuel research is important due to the potential need for replacement of non-renewable fossil fuels and a changing global climate. Under stress, algal cells tend to increase neutral lipid production, which are a suitable source for biofuels. The goal of this study was to subject Nannochloris sp.. and Oocystis sp. algal cells to osmotic stress by modifying sucrose and salinity levels in different treatment medias.

The Donna Reservoir in Donna, Texas is contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) pollution. This reviews the current understanding of PCBs and investigate the potential of PCB degradation by native bacteria communities in the Donna Reservoir. The metabolic diversity, biphenyl tolerance, bphA1 presence were tested on surface water samples from the Donna Reservoir. The Ecoplate data suggest that the communities have a diverse metabolic capacity and the degree of plant life may interact with carbon type metabolism but not the rate of growth. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) - magnetite (Fe3O4) blended compounds were produced by high speed vibration milling of PEEK-Fe 3O4 powders exposed to hexane and heated to the melting point (~350 °C) to form the homogeneous magnetic polymer composite, which provided a uniform dispersion of magnetite with low agglomerations in the polymer matrix. Polymer composite with 10 wt.% of magnetite displayed a magnetic saturation of 8 emu/g, tensile strength of 60 MPa and Young’s modulus of 4.4 GPa. Poly(ϵ-caprolactone) (PCL) is a biodegradable polyester notorious by its promising properties and applications in the biomedical field. In this work, microwave-assisted ringopening polymerization (ROP) of ϵ-caprolactone (ϵ-CL) was performed. Stannous octoate [Sn(Oct)2] was used as catalyst with and without an alcohol initiator. The different initiators tested were glycerol, diethylene glycol (DEG) and poly(ethylene) glycol (PEG). Aiming to establish reaction parameters, the influence of different reaction times, temperatures, and monomer:initiator:catalyst ratios were examined. An introduction to the relations of classical and quantum mechanics are presented in brief. As is an overview of the instrumentation and quantum chemical analysis performed to characterize the molecules presented in in this thesis. The pure rotational spectrum of 3,3,3-trifluoro-2(trifluoromethyl)propanoic acid, perfluorobutyric acid–formic acid dimer, and tropolone–formic acid dimer were measured using high-resolution microwave spectroscopy. Seagrass meadows in far South Texas are dominated by turtle grass (Thalassia testudinum), and juvenile pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides) are abundant grazers of seagrass epifauna. As they grow, pinfish exhibit an ontogenetic dietary shift and begin consuming increasing amounts of plant material. In this study, contrasting environmental regimes in two seagrass meadows were examined to identify how they might affect pinfish diets, diet shifts, and growth across the growing season. The designed instructional units aim to provide students with an adequate knowledge of astronomy and hone their skills necessary in conducting observations, collecting and analyzing data including processing of astronomical images.

The instructional design is anchored on the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate).
