A Multi-Method Approach To Evaluate Health Information Systems, Ping Yu
A Multi-Method Approach To Evaluate Health Information Systems, Ping Yu
Dr Ping Yu
Systematic evaluation of the introduction and impact of health information systems (HIS) is a challenging task. As the implementation is a dynamic process, with diverse issues emerge at various stages of system introduction, it is challenge to weigh the contribution of various factors and differentiate the critical ones. A conceptual framework will be helpful in guiding the evaluation effort; otherwise data collection may not be comprehensive and accurate. This may again lead to inadequate interpretation of the phenomena under study. Based on comprehensive literature research and own practice of evaluating health information systems, the author proposes a multimethod approach that …

A Preliminary Investigation Of Complex Adaptive Systems As A Model For Explaining Organisational Change Caused By The Introduction Of Health Information Systems, Kieren Diment, Ping Yu, Karin Garrety
Dr Ping Yu
This paper documents the preliminary development of a framework for evaluating organisational change processes during the implementation of an electronic nursing documentation system in residential aged care facilities. It starts with a brief outline of organisational change processes. This is followed by a more detailed exposition of the principles underlying complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory, where we explain how mathematical concepts can be used to illuminate qualitative research approaches. Finally we present some preliminary findings on the facilitators and barriers for the introduction of the electronic documentation system, explained with reference to the CAS theory, based on analysis of interviews …

Provably Secure Single Sign-On Scheme In Distributed Systems And Networks, Jiangshan Yu, Guilin Wang, Yi Mu
Dr Guilin Wang
Distributed systems and networks have been adopted by telecommunications, remote educations, businesses, armies and governments. A widely applied technique for distributed systems and networks is the single sign-on (SSO) which enables a user to use a unitary secure credential (or token) to access multiple computers and systems where he/she has access permissions. However, most existing SSO schemes have not been formally proved to satisfy credential privacy and soundness of credential based authentication. To overcome this drawback, we formalise the security model of single sign-on scheme with authenticated key exchange. Specially, we point out the difference between soundness and credential privacy, …

Design Maintenance In Process Eco-Systems, Tri Kurniawan, Aditya Ghose, Hoa Dam, Lam-Son Le, Tiancheng Zhang
Dr Hoa Dam
This paper addresses the problem of managing business process changes at the design level within a complex business process repository. We argue that a formal process eco-systems view can provide a particular useful solution to the problem in which their inter-process relationships can be properly described. Our intent is to build a modular infrastructure to support change management in process eco-systems by leveraging a change propagation approach that would maintain the inter-process relationships. This permits us to propagate the changes, made on a particular process, to the rest of the processes for maintaining the relationship equilibrium of such eco-system. Our …

Space-Time-Frequency Trellis Coding For Multiband Ofdm Ultra Wideband Wireless Systems, Phuc Ngoc Le, Le Chung Tran, Farzad Safaei
Dr Le Chung Tran
In this paper, the application of space time trellis codes to multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) systems is investigated. We propose a coding scheme that could fully exploit all the available channel diversity, including space diversity, frequency diversity and inter-subband diversity. Performance of the proposed system is compared with that of the conventional MB-OFDM UWB system in terms of frame error rate (FER). Simulation results show that this system outperforms the conventional one. As an example, an improvement of at least 5 dB at FER=1E-2 could be achieved over the IEEE 802.15.3a channel modes of CM1 and …

Supporting Developers In Complex Systems Modelling, Antonio A. Lopez-Lorca, Ghassan Beydoun, Rodrigo Martinez-Bejar, Holly Tootell
Dr Holly Tootell
Development of complex systems often requires building a large number of models with many interconnections and dependencies among them. The success of a project can be compromised by cognitive overload or limits of developers, who might miss relationships between elements of the models. Developing Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) is a typical example of where this may occur. Despite of its potential, this technology has not yet been widely adopted by industry due to its complexity and frequent errors in modelling activities. These errors typically propagate to later phases of the MAS development lifecycle, becoming costlier to fix and then lowering the …

Human ecosystems are real-life systems characterized by very strong and longterm interactions between human communities and their environment; as such they constitute an expansion of the ecological concept of ecosystem. According to Stepp and colleagues (2003), human ecosystems not only process matter and energy flows, but - and more specifically - information flows as well. Therefore, they display very specific characteristics due to our ability to communicate and learn from others, creating the conditions for co-evolutionary processes in which chance lends a hand to necessity. Bradbury (2006) argues that, until recently, human beings had been able to adapt to changes …

Flicker Transfer In Radial Power Systems, Sankika Tennakoon, Lakshal Perera, D A. Robinson, Sarath Perera
Associate Professor Sarath Perera
Loads which exhibit continuous and rapid variations in their current can cause voltage fluctuations that are often referred to as flicker. One good example for such loads is arc furnaces which are usually fed by dedicated feeders from the high voltage busbars in transmission systems. The flicker generated from such loads will propagate to the upstream HV point of common coupling (PCC), and from there to the downstream through the transmission and sub transmission systems. This paper demonstrates how the generated flicker is propagated from the HV PCC to the downstream in radial networks exhibiting different levels of attenuation depending …

The Application Of Iec 61000-3-6 To Mv Systems In Australia, Victor J. Gosbell, D A. Robinson, Sarath Perera, Alex Baitch
Associate Professor Sarath Perera
IEC 61000-3-6 [1] comprises a number of stages and tests to determine harmonic emission allowances for customers connected to MV or HV networks. Of particular importance is the section concerning loads distributed along a feeder, each having a different fault level. Although a common situation, the treatment given in the IEC standard is poorly described, being largely illustrated by one atypical example. This allows simplifying assumptions to be made which are invalid in practical cases. This paper outlines a more general approach that is relatively easy to apply.

The application of renewable distributed generation (DG) could be considered as an alternative approach for distribution system expansion planning not only to reduce power loss and carbon emission, but also to improve system voltage profile. This paper investigates technical aspects relatedto voltage support and loss reduction in distribution systems with distributed wind and solar generation. The probabilistic wind, solar, and load models have been developed in order to address uncertain nature of wind speed, solar radiation, and load demand. Investigations have been carried out using Monte Carlo based probabilistic load flow analysis to estimate the probability distributions of system state …
Voltage Unbalance Emission Assessment In Radial Power Systems, U Jayatunga, S Perera, P Ciufo
Voltage Unbalance Emission Assessment In Radial Power Systems, U Jayatunga, S Perera, P Ciufo
Associate Professor Sarath Perera
Voltage unbalance (VU) emission assessment is an integral part in the VU-management process where loads are allocated a portion of the unbalance absorption capacity of the power system. The International Electrotechnical Commission Report IEC/TR 61000-3-13:2008 prescribes a VU emission allocation methodology establishing the fact that the VU can arise at the point of common connection (PCC) due to upstream network unbalance and load unbalance. Although this is the case for emission allocation, approaches for post connection emission assessment do not exist except for cases where the load is the only contributor to the VU at the PCC. Such assessment methods …

Control Of Energy Storage Interface With A Bidirectional Converter For Photovoltaic Systems, K.N Hasan, M.E Haque, Michael Negnevitsky, Kashem Muttaqi
Associate Professor Kashem Muttaqi
Efficient energy storage is one of the greatest concerns for renewable power generation. This paper focuses on the control of a battery management system (BMS) for photovoltaic (PV) applications with a high efficiency bidirectional converter. The proposed BMS control strategy utilizes the dc bus power and battery state of charge (SOC) for the charging and discharging of the battery with a bidirectional converter. The bidirectional converter includes fewer components and switches, has less switching losses with zero voltage switching, and has high gain buck-boost operations. A new control algorithm of charging-discharging control for the battery storage system is proposed. The …

This paper presents a comparative assessment of the current control methods (CCM) of switch-mode converters for photovoltaic (PV) applications. In this paper, average current control, current programmed control, hysteresis current control and nonlinear carrier control methods are addressed considering input fluctuations and load variations for PV systems. Dynamic responses of PV systems are investigated and harmonic analysis is performed. Performances of the above current controllers are examined through simulation and the results are presented. The results show that the selection of different current control techniques depends on the working conditions and the area of applications.

Dynamic Universal Accumulators For Ddh Groups And Their Application To Attribute-Based Anonymous Credential Systems, Man Ho Au, Patrick P. Tsang, Willy Susilo, Yi Mu
Professor Yi Mu
We present the first dynamic universal accumulator that allows (1) the accumulation of elements in a DDH-hard group G and (2) one who knows x such that y = gx has - or has not - been accumulated, where g generates G, to efficiently prove her knowledge of such x in zero knowledge, and hence without revealing, e.g., x or y. We introduce the Attribute-Based Anonymous Credential System, which allows the verifier to authenticate anonymous users according to any access control policy expressible as a formula of possibly negated boolean user attributes. We construct the system from our accumulator.

Automated Change Impact Analysis For Agent Systems, Aditya Ghose, Hoa Dam
Dr Hoa Dam
Intelligent agent technology has evolved rapidly over the past few years along with the growing number of agent systems in various domains. Although a substantial amount of work in agent-oriented software engineering has provided methodologies for analysing, designing and implementing agent-based systems, recent studies have highlighted that there has been very little work on maintenance and evolution of agent-based systems. A critical issue in software maintenance and evolution is change impact analysis: determining the potential consequences of a proposed change. There has been a proliferation of techniques proposed to support change impact analysis of procedural or object-oriented systems, but to …

Corporate investment in enterprise level IT systems has been characterised by high rates of failure. The paper presents a knowledge based perspective to examine how firms adopt and implement enterprise systems in order to better understand how organisations can achieve reliable outcomes from such investments. The case presented explores the key decision stages of a major ERP investment, focusing on the strategic reasoning behind each decision. Particular attention is directed to the relationship between adoption know-why and implementation know-how to assess whether managers have been mindful or mindless in their investment decisions.
