Decomposition Of Finite Schmidt Rank Bounded Operators On The Tensor Product Of Separable Hilbert Spaces, Abdelkrim Bourouihiya Jan 2016

Decomposition Of Finite Schmidt Rank Bounded Operators On The Tensor Product Of Separable Hilbert Spaces, Abdelkrim Bourouihiya

Mathematics Faculty Articles

Inverse formulas for the tensor product are used to develop an algorithm to compute Schmidt decompositions of Finite Schmidt Rank (FSR) bounded operators on the tensor product of separable Hilbert spaces. The algorithm is then applied to solve inverse problems related to the tensor product of bounded operators. In particular, we show how properties of a FSR bounded operator are reflected by the operators involved in its Schmidt decomposition. These properties include compactness of FSR bounded operators and convergence of sequences whose terms are FSR bounded operators.

Employees spend time during work hours on non – work related activities including visiting e - commerce Websites, managing personal email accounts, and engaging in e - banking. These types of actions in the workplace are known as cyber slacking. Cyber slacking affects employees’ productivity, presents legal concerns, and undermines the security of the employer’s network. This research study addressed the problem of cyber slacking in the public sector, by assessing the ethical severity of cyber slacking activities, as well as how employees perceived that the frequency of such activities occurred by their co - workers. Participants from public sector …

An Empirical Study Of Authentication Methods To Secure E-Learning System Activities Against Impersonation Fraud, Shauna Beaudin, Yair Levy, James Parrish, Theon Danet Jan 2016

An Empirical Study Of Authentication Methods To Secure E-Learning System Activities Against Impersonation Fraud, Shauna Beaudin, Yair Levy, James Parrish, Theon Danet

CCE Faculty Articles

The demand for e – learning systems in both academic and non – academic organizations has increased the need to improve security against impersonation fraud. Although there are a number of studies focused on securing Web - based systems from Information Systems (IS) misuse, research has recognized the importance of identifying suitable levels of authenticating strength for various activities. In e - learning systems, it is evident that due to the variation in authentication strength among controls, a ‘one size fits all’ solution is not suitable for securing diverse e - learning activities against impersonation fraud. The focus of this …

CCE Faculty Articles

While the Internet is a major business tool nowadays, individuals are still challenged to form team s and collaboration virtually. To evaluate the success of team formation in a virtual setting, this research study assessed the role of different computer – mediated communications (CMC) employed on the success of team formation measured by task performance (TP), team cohesiveness (TC), computer skills (CS) and social bond (SB), while assessing the differences on such relationships when controlled for gender, age, education level, academic major, as well as academic year. This research used analysis of variance (ANOVA) and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to …

Using Data Analytics To Further Understand The Role That Boredom, Loneliness, Social Anxiety, Social Gratification, And Social Relationships (Brag) Play In A Driver’S Decision To Text, Nathan White, Yair Levy, Steven R. Terrell, Steve Bronsburg Jan 2016

Using Data Analytics To Further Understand The Role That Boredom, Loneliness, Social Anxiety, Social Gratification, And Social Relationships (Brag) Play In A Driver’S Decision To Text, Nathan White, Yair Levy, Steven R. Terrell, Steve Bronsburg

CCE Faculty Articles

Texting while driving is a growing problem that current efforts have failed to curtail. This behavior has serious, and sometimes fatal, consequences, and the factors that cause a driver to text are not well understood. This study investigates the influence that boredom, social relationships, social anxiety, and social gratification (BRAG) have upon the texting driver. A survey instrument was used to collect data from 297 respondents at a mid – sized regional university in the Pacific North west of the United States. The data was evaluated with PLS - SEM, which indicated that social gratification plays a very significant role …

Vision And Bioluminescence In The Deep-Sea Benthos, Tamara M. Frank, Sonke Johnsen, Heather D. Bracken-Grissom, Charles Messing, Edith A. Widder

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

During a NOAA-OER funded research cruise, novel collecting techniques were used to collect live, deep-sea benthic animals for studies of bioluminescence and vision. True color images and emission spectra of bioluminescence were obtained from a number of species, including the spiral octocoral Iridogorgia sp., the sea fan Chrysogorgia sp., the sea pen Umbellula sp., and the caridean shrimp Heterocarpusoryx. Electrophysiological studies were conducted on 3 species of decapod crustaceans collected with methods that limited light damage to their photoreceptors. The caridean shrimp, Bathypalaemonella, collected from 1920m, was always found in association with the bioluminescent spiral octocoral Iridogorgia. While …

Energy-Conserving Numerical Scheme For The Poisson-Nerst-Plank Equations, Julienne Kabre Jan 2016

Energy-Conserving Numerical Scheme For The Poisson-Nerst-Plank Equations, Julienne Kabre

Mathematics Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Preliminary report.
The Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations are a system of nonlinear partial differential equations that describe flow of charged particles in solution. In particular, we are interested in the transport of ions in the biological membrane proteins (ion channels). This work is about the design of numerical schemes that preserve exactly (up to roundoff error) a discretized form of the energy dynamics of the system. We will present a scheme that achieves the goal of preserving the energy dissipation law and some preliminary numerical results.

In a changing ocean there is a critical need to understand global biogeochemical cycling, particularly regarding carbon. We have made strides in understanding upper ocean dynamics, but the deep ocean interior (> 1000 m) is still largely unknown, despite representing the overwhelming majority of Earth's biosphere. Here we present a method for estimating deep-pelagic zooplankton biomass on an ocean-basin scale. We have made several new discoveries about the Atlantic, which likely apply to the world ocean. First, multivariate analysis showed that depth and Chl were the basic factors affecting the wet biomass of the main plankton groups. Wet biomass of …

Model Suggests Potential For Porites Coral Population Recovery After Removal Of Anthropogenic Disturbance (Luhuitou, Hainan, South China Sea), Meixia Zhao, Bernhard Riegl, Kefu Yu, Qi Shi, Qiaomin Zhang, Guohui Liu, Hongqiang Yang, Hongquiang Yan

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Population models are important for resource management and can inform about potential trajectories useful for planning purposes, even with incomplete monitoring data. From size frequency data on Luhuitou fringing reef, Hainan, South China Sea, a matrix population model of massive corals (Porites lutea) was developed and trajectories over 100 years under no disturbance and random disturbances were projected. The model reflects a largely open population of Porites lutea, with low local recruitment and preponderance of imported recruitment. Under no further disturbance, the population of Porites lutea will grow and its size structure will change from predominance of …

Sex On The Reef: Observations Of Coral Spawning In Dry Tortugas National Park, Karen L. Neely, Tracy A. Ziegler

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

In Florida’s remote Dry Tortugas National Park, coral reefs are an important management priority. Reproduction of coral species is difficult to monitor, however, and the reproductive potential of coral colonies at the park has been a matter of concern for several years. Two threatened species, elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata) and pillar coral (Dendrogyra cylindrus), were targeted for observation during their predicted annual spawning event in August 2014. Over a three-night period, both species were observed releasing gametes in near synchrony with observations at other sites in the Florida Keys. That these organisms are capable of being …
