Evaluating The Interactive Roles Of Soil Nutrients And Polyploidy On Competitive Outcomes Of Chamerion Angustifolium, Angela Walczyk Jan 2018

Evaluating The Interactive Roles Of Soil Nutrients And Polyploidy On Competitive Outcomes Of Chamerion Angustifolium, Angela Walczyk

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Newly formed polyploids face strong barriers preventing their establishment, but despite these barriers polyploidy is prevalent among angiosperms being a major mechanism of adaptation and speciation. Morphological and phenological differences between diploids and related polyploids often results in different ecological tolerances among cytotypes. Differences in competitive abilities brought on by genome duplication can vary with abiotic and biotic environmental conditions and influence polyploid establishment. In my theses, I test the overall hypothesis that soil nutrient availability and polyploidy interact to affect competition and performance of Fireweed plants (Chamerion angustifolium), which differ in ploidy levels. Additionally, I examined whether …

Nondestructive Evaluation Of Salvage White Spruce, Tyler Hovde Jan 2018

Nondestructive Evaluation Of Salvage White Spruce, Tyler Hovde

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Knowledge of wood quality in dead standing trees is an important topic with recent increases in defoliation across North America. Obtaining wood quality information for defoliated trees would help stakeholders in the timber products industry sort and sell salvaged material for the highest possible value. This research investigates the ability to measure wood quality of white spruce (Picea glauca) after spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) attack using acoustic nondestructive evaluation. We compared stress wave velocities measured on standing trees to trees’ visual appearance. After harvest and processing of selected trees into bolts, standing-tree stress wave velocities were compared to bolt acoustic …

Application Of Seismic Radial Anisotropy For Near-Surface Fractures Identification, Jer-Yu Jeng Jan 2018

Application Of Seismic Radial Anisotropy For Near-Surface Fractures Identification, Jer-Yu Jeng

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Fractures significantly control the groundwater flow and solute transport in geological settings of low-permeable rocks. Fractures also affect seismic wave propagation. For instance, they can create a directional dependence of seismic velocity with respect to their orientations, known as seismic anisotropy. Seismic radial anisotropy as used here is the difference between the velocity of a vertically polarized S-wave (SV) and one polarized horizontally (SH). In this thesis, seismic radial anisotropy was used to evaluate its usefulness for correlating with near-surface fractures. The seismic radial anisotropy models were obtained at two sites from dispersion analyses of the Rayleigh waves, with vertical …

Ground Deformation Studies And Evacuation Behavior During Eruptions At Guatemalan Volcanoes, Hans Lechner Jan 2018

Ground Deformation Studies And Evacuation Behavior During Eruptions At Guatemalan Volcanoes, Hans Lechner

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Volcanic eruptions can be an especially problematic hazard when considering the uncertainty in eruption timing and magnitude coupled with challenges associated with delivering warnings to remote areas and facilitating effective evacuations. The hazards presented by Guatemala’s active volcanoes demand enhanced monitoring capabilities and instrumentation infrastructure. Strengthening the link between the physical and social sciences should lead to more accurate, reliable, and timely hazard information to the people living in proximity to the volcano and facilitate rational decisions and actions that reduce their level of risk. While there is no one single technique that can provide unambiguous diagnostics about the timing, …

The Abiotic Stress Response Of Hydroponic Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon Zizanioides L.) To Acid Mine Drainage And Its Potential For Environmental Remediation, Jef Kiiskila Jan 2018

The Abiotic Stress Response Of Hydroponic Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon Zizanioides L.) To Acid Mine Drainage And Its Potential For Environmental Remediation, Jef Kiiskila

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Mining activities can generate acid mine drainage (AMD), an acidic discharge that contains elevated sulfate (SO42-), soluble metals, and orange-yellow metal-containing particulates. AMD imposes ecological risks from metal toxicity and physical stress, which may physically spread to nearby water sources or biologically through bioaccumulation. Current methods for AMD treatment, such as chemical or passive biological treatments, are often non-sustainable. Chemical treatments can be expensive and create large amounts of secondary waste, whereas biological treatments like anaerobic wetlands require continuous maintenance through input of organic nutrients. The end goal of this research is to develop a cost-efficient and …

A Model To Predict Concentrations And Uncertainty For Mercury Species In Lakes, Ashley Hendricks Jan 2018

A Model To Predict Concentrations And Uncertainty For Mercury Species In Lakes, Ashley Hendricks

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

To increase understanding of mercury cycling, a seasonal mass balance model was developed to predict mercury concentrations in lakes and fish. Results indicate that seasonality in mercury cycling is significant and is important for a northern latitude lake. Models, when validated, have the potential to be used as an alternative to measurements; models are relatively inexpensive and are not as time intensive. Previously published mercury models have neglected to perform a thorough validation. Model validation allows for regulators to be able to make more informed, confident decisions when using models in water quality management. It is critical to quantify uncertainty; …

Evaporation Of A Sessile Droplet On A Slope, Mitch Timm Jan 2018

Evaporation Of A Sessile Droplet On A Slope, Mitch Timm

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

We theoretically examine the drying of a stationary liquid droplet on an inclined surface. Both analytical and numerical approaches are considered, while assuming that the evaporation results from a purely diffusive transport of the liquid vapor and that the contact line is a pinned circle. For the purposes of our analytical calculations, we suppose that the effect of gravity relative to the surface tension is weak, i.e. the Bond number (Bo) is small. Then, we express the shape of the drop and the vapor concentration field as perturbation expansions in terms of Bo. When the Bond number is zero, the …

Modeling Data Center Co-Tenancy Performance Interference, Wei Kuang Jan 2018

Modeling Data Center Co-Tenancy Performance Interference, Wei Kuang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

A multi-core machine allows executing several applications simultaneously. Those jobs are scheduled on different cores and compete for shared resources such as the last level cache and memory bandwidth. Such competitions might cause performance degradation. Data centers often utilize virtualization to provide a certain level of performance isolation. However, some of the shared resources cannot be divided, even in a virtualized system, to ensure complete isolation. If the performance degradation of co-tenancy is not known to the cloud administrator, a data center often has to dedicate a whole machine for a latency-sensitive application to guarantee its quality of service. Co-run …

Study Of The Cygnus Region With Fermi And Hawc, Andrew Robare Jan 2018

Study Of The Cygnus Region With Fermi And Hawc, Andrew Robare

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The Cygnus Cocoon is an extended source of high-energy gamma-ray emission in the Cygnus region. The gamma-ray emission has been attributed to a volume 50pc in diameter of freshly-accelerated particles near the Supernova Remnant γ Cygni which is located 1.4kpc from the solar system [Ackermann et al., 2011], [Tibaldo et al., 2013]. Since its discovery in 2011, Fermi LAT has improved their event reconstruction to allow analysis at higher energies, and recorded six additional years of data. An analysis was performed on the entire dataset to reproduce the previous results, then expand on them with higher energies and larger time …

Statistical Methods For Detecting Causal Rare Variants And Analyzing Multiple Phenotypes, Xinlan Yang Jan 2018

Statistical Methods For Detecting Causal Rare Variants And Analyzing Multiple Phenotypes, Xinlan Yang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation includes two papers with each distributed in one chapter. To date, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified a large number of common variants that are associated with complex diseases successfully. However, the common variants identified by GWAS only account for a small proportion of trait heritability. Many studies showed that rare variants could explain parts of the missing heritability. Since the well-developed common variant detecting methods are underpowered for rare variant association tests unless sample sizes or effect sizes are very large, investigation the roles of rare variants in complex diseases presents substantial challenges. In chapter 1, we …

Analyzing The Life-Cycle Of Unstable Slopes Using Applied Remote Sensing Within An Asset Management Framework, El Hachemi Y. Bouali Jan 2018

Analyzing The Life-Cycle Of Unstable Slopes Using Applied Remote Sensing Within An Asset Management Framework, El Hachemi Y. Bouali

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

An asset management framework provides a methodology for monitoring and maintaining assets, which include anthropogenic infrastructure (e.g., dams, embankments, and retaining structures) and natural geological features (e.g., soil and rock slopes). It is imperative that these assets operate efficiently, effectively, safely, and at a high standard since many assets are located along transportation corridors (highways, railways, and waterways) and can cause severe damage if compromised. Assets built on or around regions prone to natural hazards are at an increased risk of deterioration and failure. The objective of this study is to utilize remote sensing techniques such as InSAR, LiDAR, and …

Characterizing Cdom Spectral Variability From Seas To Space, Brice Grunert Jan 2018

Characterizing Cdom Spectral Variability From Seas To Space, Brice Grunert

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption varies significantly across the global oceans, presumably due to differences in source and degradation pathways. Tracking this variability on a global, or even regional, scale requires broad temporal and spatial sampling at high frequency. Satellite remote sensing provides this platform; however, current and near future sensors are/will be limited to measurements within the UV and visible wavelengths (> 350 nm) while most optical proxies estimating CDOM composition, and relevant for understanding largescale biogeochemical processes, use wavelengths less than 350 nm. This dissertation examines global variability in CDOM spectral variability utilizing a variety of optical …

Offline And Online Density Estimation For Large High-Dimensional Data, Aref Majdara Jan 2018

Offline And Online Density Estimation For Large High-Dimensional Data, Aref Majdara

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Density estimation has wide applications in machine learning and data analysis techniques including clustering, classification, multimodality analysis, bump hunting and anomaly detection. In high-dimensional space, sparsity of data in local neighborhood makes many of parametric and nonparametric density estimation methods mostly inefficient.

This work presents development of computationally efficient algorithms for high-dimensional density estimation, based on Bayesian sequential partitioning (BSP). Copula transform is used to separate the estimation of marginal and joint densities, with the purpose of reducing the computational complexity and estimation error. Using this separation, a parallel implementation of the density estimation algorithm on a 4-core CPU is …

Intelligent And Secure Underwater Acoustic Communication Networks, Chaofeng Wang Jan 2018

Intelligent And Secure Underwater Acoustic Communication Networks, Chaofeng Wang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Underwater acoustic (UWA) communication networks are promising techniques for medium- to long-range wireless information transfer in aquatic applications. The harsh and dynamic water environment poses grand challenges to the design of UWA networks. This dissertation leverages the advances in machine learning and signal processing to develop intelligent and secure UWA communication networks. Three research topics are studied: 1) reinforcement learning (RL)-based adaptive transmission in UWA channels; 2) reinforcement learning-based adaptive trajectory planning for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in under-ice environments; 3) signal alignment to secure underwater coordinated multipoint (CoMP) transmissions.

First, a RL-based algorithm is developed for adaptive transmission in …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Current Atmospheric Refraction Models In Predicting Sunrise And Sunset Times, Teresa Wilson Jan 2018

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Current Atmospheric Refraction Models In Predicting Sunrise And Sunset Times, Teresa Wilson

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The standard value for atmospheric refraction on the horizon of 34', used in all publicly available sunrise and sunset calculators, is found to be inadequate. The assumptions behind atmospheric models that predict this value fail to account for real meteorological conditions. The result is an uncertainty of one to five minutes in sunrise and sunset predictions at mid-latitudes (0° - 55° N/S). A sunrise/set calculator that interchanges the refraction component by varying the refraction model was developed. Two atmospheric refraction models of increasing complexity were tested along with the standard value. The predictions were compared with data sets of observed …

Long-Term Changes In Extreme Air Pollution Meteorology And Implications For Air Quality, Pei Hou Jan 2018

Long-Term Changes In Extreme Air Pollution Meteorology And Implications For Air Quality, Pei Hou

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Extreme air pollution meteorology, such as heat waves, temperature inversions, and atmospheric stagnation episodes, can significantly affect air quality. In this study, we analyze their long-term trends and the potential impacts on air quality. The significant increasing trends for the occurrences of extreme meteorological events in 1951-2010 are identified with the reanalysis data, especially over the continental regions. A statistical analysis combining air quality data and meteorological data indicates strong sensitivities of air quality, including both average air pollutant concentrations and high pollution episodes, to extreme meteorological events. Results also show significant seasonal and spatial variations in the sensitivity of …

Statistical Methods For Analyzing Multivariate Phenotypes And Detecting Rare Variant Associations, Huanhuan Zhu Jan 2018

Statistical Methods For Analyzing Multivariate Phenotypes And Detecting Rare Variant Associations, Huanhuan Zhu

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation includes four papers with each distributed in one chapter.

In chapter 1, I compared the performance of eight multivariate phenotype association tests. The motivation to conduct this power comparison paper is as follows. For nearly 15 years, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been widely used to identify genetic variants associated with human diseases and traits. GWAS typically investigate genetic variants for a predefined phenotype, thus fail to identify weak but important effects. In recent years, many multivariate association tests have been developed. However, there is a lack of comprehensive summary of such kinds of approaches. To fill this …

Novel Faraday Rotation Effects Observed In Ultra-Thin Iron Garnet Films, Brandon Blasiola Jan 2018

Novel Faraday Rotation Effects Observed In Ultra-Thin Iron Garnet Films, Brandon Blasiola

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Recent work performed by A. Chakravarty and M. Levy showed experimentally a dramatic increase in the specific Faraday Rotation (FR) of the iron garnet Bi0.8Lu0.2Gd2Fe5O12. A theoretical model, based purely on classical electrodynamics, attempting to explain this behavior was developed by colleagues in Russia that not only confirmed the asymptotic increase in the specific FR at sub-50nm film thicknesses but also suggested that the specific FR should exhibit significant fluctuations at sub-500 nm film thicknesses. The original data points were widespread with steps of 50 nm or more between data …

Generalizable Modeling Of Charge Transport In Single Electron Transistor Devices: Application To Thermal Sensitivity In Semiconducting Island Systems, Paniz Khanmohammadi Hazaveh

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Electronic devices, especially MOSFETs, have been dimensionally scaled down to enhance operation of integrated circuits, addressing challenges such as current leakage, fluctuation of intrinsic semiconductor properties, and power dissipation. Reaching dimensions below 20 nm, there are fundamental limitations that are difficult to overcome, driving alternative device paradigms to be sought utilizing the quantum mechanical behavior of electrons. Single electron transistor (SET) devices are examples of a new generation of low-power transistors designed to transport information via single electron tunneling through one or more islands separated by tunnel junctions. Experimentally explored SET devices have shown that there are advantages to using …

Resource Optimization In Wireless Sensor Networks For An Improved Field Coverage And Cooperative Target Tracking, Husam Sweidan Jan 2018

Resource Optimization In Wireless Sensor Networks For An Improved Field Coverage And Cooperative Target Tracking, Husam Sweidan

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

There are various challenges that face a wireless sensor network (WSN) that mainly originate from the limited resources a sensor node usually has. A sensor node often relies on a battery as a power supply which, due to its limited capacity, tends to shorten the life-time of the node and the network as a whole. Other challenges arise from the limited capabilities of the sensors/actuators a node is equipped with, leading to complication like a poor coverage of the event, or limited mobility in the environment. This dissertation deals with the coverage problem as well as the limited power and …

Joint Analysis For Multiple Traits, Zhenchuan Wang Jan 2018

Joint Analysis For Multiple Traits, Zhenchuan Wang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation includes three papers with each distributed in one chapter.

In chapter 1, we proposed an Adaptive Weighting Reverse Regression (AWRR) method to test association between multiple traits and rare variants in a genomic region. AWRR is robust to the directions of effects of causal variants and is also robust to the directions of association of traits. Using extensive simulation studies, we compared the performance of AWRR with canonical correlation analysis (CCA), Single-TOW, and the Weighted Sum Reverse Regression (WSRR). Our results showed that, in all of the simulation scenarios, AWRR is consistently more powerful than CCA. In most …

High Accuracy Methods And Regularization Techniques For Fluid Flows And Fluid-Fluid Interaction, Mustafa Aggul Jan 2018

High Accuracy Methods And Regularization Techniques For Fluid Flows And Fluid-Fluid Interaction, Mustafa Aggul

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation contains several approaches to resolve irregularity issues of CFD problems, including a decoupling of non-linearly coupled fluid-fluid interaction, due to high Reynolds number. New models present not only regularize the linear systems but also produce high accurate solutions both in space and time. To achieve this goal, methods solve a computationally attractive artificial viscosity approximation of the target problem, and then utilize a correction approach to make it high order accurate. This way, they all allow the usage of legacy code | a frequent requirement in the simulation of fluid flows in complex geometries. In addition, they all …

Probing Quantum Transport In Three-Terminal Nanojunctions, Meghnath Jaishi Jan 2018

Probing Quantum Transport In Three-Terminal Nanojunctions, Meghnath Jaishi

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

One-dimensional (1D) nanoscale systems—structures with the lateral dimensions ranging from 1 nm to 100 nm — have received significant research interest due to their unique structure-guided properties that promise functionalities far more superior than their bulk counterparts. The quantum confinement effect in 1D nanostructures provides us with a very powerful tool to tune their electrical, magnetic, optical and thermal properties and opens the gateway for their multifunctional usages in next-generation electronics. In particular, carbon nanotubes and semiconductor nanowires are found to offer tremendous opportunities to form the junction devices with controlled electronic and optoelectronic properties crucial to predictable device functions. …

Application Of Remote Sensing And Machine Learning Modeling To Post-Wildfire Debris Flow Risks, Priscilla Addison Jan 2018

Application Of Remote Sensing And Machine Learning Modeling To Post-Wildfire Debris Flow Risks, Priscilla Addison

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Historically, post-fire debris flows (DFs) have been mostly more deadly than the fires that preceded them. Fires can transform a location that had no history of DFs to one that is primed for it. Studies have found that the higher the severity of the fire, the higher the probability of DF occurrence. Due to high fatalities associated with these events, several statistical models have been developed for use as emergency decision support tools. These previous models used linear modeling approaches that produced subpar results. Our study therefore investigated the application of nonlinear machine learning modeling as an alternative. Existing models …

Pseudo-Companion Matrices For Polynomial Systems, Melinda Kleczynski Jan 2018

Pseudo-Companion Matrices For Polynomial Systems, Melinda Kleczynski

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Roots of a scalar polynomial in one variable are frequently found by computing the eigenvalues of the standard companion matrix. In this exploratory work, we introduce the pseudo-companion matrix for finding roots of multivariable polynomial systems. In some cases, a perturbation of the polynomial system is used for the matrix construction, yielding approximate roots of the original polynomial system. The coordinates of the roots, or their approximations, are obtained from the eigenvectors of this matrix. In this thesis, we describe the process of constructing the pseudo-companion matrix and computing the polynomial roots using illustrative examples.

Comparison Of Karstification Methods And Isostatic Rebound In The Suwannee River Basin, Florida, Toni Larche Jan 2018

Comparison Of Karstification Methods And Isostatic Rebound In The Suwannee River Basin, Florida, Toni Larche

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Plio-Pleistocene beach ridges in northern Florida are nearly 50 m above current sea level, but sea level during that time is not known to have been more than 25 m above current sea level. The height of beach ridges in northern Florida therefore create a conundrum because Florida is located on a passive margin in what is considered a tectonically stable environment. A series of recent studies have suggested that uplift on the Florida peninsula may be the result of the removal of subsurface crustal mass. Karstification of Florida’s carbonate matrix may provide a mechanism for subsurface crustal mass removal …

Wildfire Emissions In The Context Of Global Change And The Implications For Mercury Pollution, Aditya Kumar Jan 2018

Wildfire Emissions In The Context Of Global Change And The Implications For Mercury Pollution, Aditya Kumar

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Wildfires are episodic disturbances that exert a significant influence on the Earth system. They emit substantial amounts of atmospheric pollutants, which can impact atmospheric chemistry/composition and the Earth’s climate at the global and regional scales. This work presents a collection of studies aimed at better estimating wildfire emissions of atmospheric pollutants, quantifying their impacts on remote ecosystems and determining the implications of 2000s-2050s global environmental change (land use/land cover, climate) for wildfire emissions following the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) A1B socioeconomic scenario.

A global fire emissions model is developed to compile global wildfire emission inventories for major atmospheric …

Effects Of Mass And Distance Uncertainties On Calculations Of Flux From Giant Molecular Clouds, Matt Coel Jan 2018

Effects Of Mass And Distance Uncertainties On Calculations Of Flux From Giant Molecular Clouds, Matt Coel

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

It is assumed that the distribution of the Milky Way cosmic rays, the cosmic ray ‘sea,’ is even throughout the Galaxy. This assumption can be tested by measuring gamma rays produced from cosmic ray interactions with Giant Molecular Clouds. The gamma ray flux depends on the mass and distance of a given molecular cloud as well as the cosmic ray flux in its vicinity. Thus a predicted gamma ray flux can be compared to actual flux data from a detector. Uncertainties from measuring the mass of and distance to the clouds are taken into account for this prediction. This report …

Physicochemical, Spectroscopic Properties, And Diffusion Mechanisms Of Small Hydrocarbon Molecules In Mof-74-Mg/Zn: A Quantum Chemical Investigation, Gemechis Degaga Jan 2018

Physicochemical, Spectroscopic Properties, And Diffusion Mechanisms Of Small Hydrocarbon Molecules In Mof-74-Mg/Zn: A Quantum Chemical Investigation, Gemechis Degaga

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

In petroleum refining industries, the fracturing process allows for the cracking of long-chain hydrocarbons into a mixture of small olefin and paraffin molecules that are then separated via the energetically and monetarily demanding cryogenic distillation process. In an attempt to mitigate both energetic and capital consumptions, selective sorption of light hydrocarbons by tunable sorbents, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), appears to be the most promising alternative for a more efficient gas separation process. MOFs are novel porous materials assembled from inorganic bricks connected by organic linkers. From a crystal engineering stand point, MOFs are advantageous in creating a range …
