Evidence For Terahertz Acoustic Phonon Parametric Oscillator Based On Acousto-Optic Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing In A Silicon Doping Superlattice, Thomas E. Wilson
Evidence For Terahertz Acoustic Phonon Parametric Oscillator Based On Acousto-Optic Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing In A Silicon Doping Superlattice, Thomas E. Wilson
Physics Faculty Research
We report evidence for a 1.0-THz self-starting mirrorless acoustic phonon parametric oscillator (MAPPO) produced from acousto-optic phase-conjugate degenerate four-wave (D4WM) mixing in a THz laser-pumped silicon doping superlattice (DSL). The DSL was grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a (100) boron-doped silicon substrate. A superconducting NbTiN subwavelength grating was used to couple the THz laser radiation into the DSL. Superconducting granular aluminum bolometric detection, coupled with Si:B piezophonon spectroscopy, revealed excitation of THz coherent compressional and shear waves, along the ⟨111⟩ direction only. The Bragg scattering condition for distributed feedback, and the energy conservation requirement for the D4WM process, were …

Nanoparticle monolayer sheets are ultrathin inorganic-organic hybrid materials that combine highly controllable optical and electrical properties with mechanical exibility and remarkable strength. Like other thin sheets, their low bending rigidity allows them to easily roll into or conform to cylindrical geometries. Nanoparticle monolayers not only can bend, but also cope with strain through local particle rearrangement and plastic deformation. This means that, unlike thin sheets such as paper or graphene, nanoparticle sheets can much more easily conform to surfaces with com- plex topography characterized by non-zero Gaussian curvature, like spherical caps or saddles. Here, we investigate the limits of nanoparticle …
Circulant Matrices And Mathematical Juggling, Richard A. Brualdi, Michael W. Schroeder
Circulant Matrices And Mathematical Juggling, Richard A. Brualdi, Michael W. Schroeder
Mathematics Faculty Research
Circulants form a well-studied and important class of matrices, and they arise in many algebraic and combinatorial contexts, in particular as multiplication tables of cyclic groups and as special classes of latin squares. There is also a known connection between circulants and mathematical juggling. The purpose of this note is to expound on this connection developing further some of its properties. We also formulate some problems and conjectures with some computational data supporting them.

This paper explores the use of hacking, leaking, and trolling by Russia to influence the 2016 United States Presidential Elections. These tactics have been called “the weapons of the geek” by some researchers. By using proxy hackers and Russian malware to break into the email of the Democratic National Committee and then giving that email to Wikileaks to publish on the Internet, the Russian government attempted to swing the election in the favor of their preferred candidate.
The source of the malware used in the DNC hack was determined to be of Russian in nature and has been used on …

Ultrathin membranes composed of metallic or semiconducting nanoparticles capped with short ligand molecules are hybrid materials that have attracted considerable research interest.1-12 In contrast to two-dimensional (2D) membranes such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides monolayers, nanoparticle membranes can be engineered to achieve widely tunable mechanical, electronic or optical properties through different combinations of inorganic cores and organic ligands. In terms of mechanical properties, these membranes can form large area (tens of microns in diameter) freestanding structures with high Young’s moduli (~GPa) and fracture strength.1,13-15 Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have indicated how this mechanical robustness can arise from …

Formalizing Schoenberg’S Fundamentals Of Musical Composition Through Petri Nets, A. Baratè, G. Haus, L. A. Ludovico, Davide Andrea Mauro
Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research
The formalization of musical composition rules is a topic that has been studied for a long time. It can lead to a better understanding of the underlying processes, and provide a useful tool for musicologist to aid and speed up the analysis process. In our attempt we introduce Schoenberg’s rules from Fundamentals of Musical Composition using a specialized version of Petri nets, called Music Petri nets. Petri nets are a formal tool for studying systems that are concurrent, asynchronous, distributed, parallel, nondeterministic, and/or stochastic. We present some examples highlighting how multiple approaches to the analysis task can find counterparts in …

Large Rotations Of Crustal Blocks In The Tjörnes Fracture Zone Of Northern Iceland, Andrew J. Horst, J. A. Carson, R. J. Varga
Natural Resources and Earth Sciences Faculty Research
The interpretation of uppermost crustal deformation near oceanic transform faults is based on bathymetric lineaments and earthquake focal mechanisms, and relatively little is known about the detailed kinematics within the transform tectonized zone. The Tjörnes Fracture Zone is a broad zone of deformation produced by right‐lateral transform shearing in north Iceland and is partly exposed on land providing the opportunity to study shallow‐level crustal structure of mid‐Miocene, thick, oceanic‐like crust formed by subaerial spreading. A pronounced structural curvature of lava and dike orientations near the Húsavík‐Flatey Fault within the transform zone is well documented, yet of controversial origin. In order …
Global Stability For A 2n + 1 Dimensional Hiv/Aids Epidemic Model With Treatments, Olusegun Michael Otunuga
Global Stability For A 2n + 1 Dimensional Hiv/Aids Epidemic Model With Treatments, Olusegun Michael Otunuga
Mathematics Faculty Research
In this work, we derive and analyze a 2n + 1-dimensional deterministic differential equation modeling the transmission and treatment of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) disease. The model is extended to a stochastic differential equation by introducing noise in the transmission rate of the disease. A theoretical treatment strategy of regular HIV testing and immediate treatment with Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) is investigated in the presence and absence of noise. By defining R0, n, Rt, n and Rt,n as the deterministic basic reproduction number in the absence of ART treatments, deterministic basic reproduction number in the presence of …

This book provides a brief history of the early computing technology at Marshall University, Huntington, W.Va., in the forty years: 1959-1999. This was before the move to Intel and Windows based servers. After installation of an IBM Accounting Machine in 1959, which arguably does not fit the modern definition of a computer, the first true computer arrived in 1963 and was installed in a room below the Registrar’s office. For the next twenty years several departments ordered their own midrange standalone systems to fit their individual departmental requirements. These represented different platforms from different vendors, and were not connected to …

A difference equation analogue of the generalized hypergeometric differential equation is defined, its contiguous relations are developed, and its relation to numerous well-known classical special functions are demonstrated.
The Influence Of Northern Hemisphere Teleconnections On The Geography Of Pacific Tropical Cyclone Genesis, Nicholas Ray Adkins
The Influence Of Northern Hemisphere Teleconnections On The Geography Of Pacific Tropical Cyclone Genesis, Nicholas Ray Adkins
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The research in this thesis used statistical and spatial analysis methods to test the influence of six Northern Hemisphere teleconnection patterns on the latitude and longitude components of tropical cyclogenesis occurring in the eastern and western North Pacific Ocean basins for the period 1979-2016. The Pacific-North American (PNA), West Pacific (WP), El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), and Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) teleconnection patterns were examined independently and in combination for association with variations in cyclogenesis geography. Four of the six teleconnection patterns were found to exert an influence on cyclogenesis latitude and/or longitude in …

The spread of wirelessly connected computing sensors and devices and hybrid networks are leading to the emergence of an Internet of Things (IoT), where a myriad of multi-scale sensors and devices are seamlessly blended for ubiquitous computing and communication. However, the communication operations of wireless devices are often limited by the size and lifetime of the batteries because of the portability and mobility. To reduce energy consumption during wireless communication, the IEEE 802.11 standard specifies a power management scheme, called Power Saving Mechanism (PSM), for IEEE 802.11 devices. However, the PSM of IEEE 802.11 was originally designed for battery-supported devices …

Thumb Sticks And Hand Grenades : An Analysis Of War And Perspectives In Video Games, Jonathan Ked Nance
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Throughout Thumb Sticks and Hand Grenades, I seek to examine the role American Exceptionalism plays within the player’s perspective of war narratives in Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Wolfenstein: The New Order, and Wolfenstein: The New Colossus. Using a theoretical lens I call ludo-narrative war theory, I am able to fully understand the above-listed games’ narrative, player perspectives, and positions in relationship to the wider war narrative and how the games reflect a wider understanding of war, American Exceptionalism, and societal issues prevalent in the analog world. When these facets of the games are analyzed I am able to show …
Preference Probability Based On Ranks - A New Approach Using Logistic Regression With Zero Intercept, Oluwagbenga David Agboola
Preference Probability Based On Ranks - A New Approach Using Logistic Regression With Zero Intercept, Oluwagbenga David Agboola
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Many probability models have been proposed to describe rankings. One of these is the BradleyTerry model, which is based on observed pairwise preferences. For this study, we reverse the case and propose a new approach for estimating pairwise preference probabilities based on observed rankings. The new approach uses logistic regression with zero intercept as the statistical model that fits this situation. In order to implement the model, we first estimate the parameter using maximum likelihood estimation. Then we evaluate this estimation using numerical approximation procedures. We consider three such procedures: bisection method, Newton-Raphson method, and improved Newton’s method. Using simulated …

Smartphone-Based Self Rescue System For Disaster Rescue, Xitong Zhou
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Recent ubiquitous earthquakes have been leading to mass destruction of electrical power and cellular infrastructures, and deprive the innocent lives across the world. Due to the wide-area earthquake disaster, unavailable power and communication infrastructure, limited man-power and resources, traditional rescue operations and equipment are inefficient and time-consuming, leading to the golden hours missed. With the increasing proliferation of powerful wireless devices, like smartphones, they can be assumed to be abundantly available among the disaster victims and can act as valuable resources to coordinate disaster rescue operations. In this paper, we propose a smartphone-based self-rescue system, also referred to as RescueMe, …
An Extension Of The Jeu De Taquin, Joanna Mckinney
An Extension Of The Jeu De Taquin, Joanna Mckinney
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The Knuth transformations on words, the jeu de taquin moves on tableaux, and the Robinson–Schensted–Knuth algorithm produce the same equivalence classes for words. By observing the connections between these three methods we find and prove there exists connections between the Assaf–Knuth transformations, our extension of the jeu de taquin, and p-RSK. We know there exists an algebraic way to expand Macdonald polynomials in terms of the Schur functions. The form of the expansion implies there should be a combinatorial way to find the expansion. Loehr found a Robinson–Schensted–Knuth like algorithm that works in some cases. By finding an extension of …
