Valine Sulfonamidecinnamic Acid Asymmetric Crystal Reactions, Kraig A. Wheeler, Steven H. Malehorn, Annie E. Egan Nov 2011

Valine Sulfonamidecinnamic Acid Asymmetric Crystal Reactions, Kraig A. Wheeler, Steven H. Malehorn, Annie E. Egan

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Racemic and homochiral valine sulfonamidecinnamic acidscrystallize with components aligned by use of thecomplementary features of hydrogen bonds and moleculartopology to give supramolecular dimers. These discretemotifs effectively organize adjacent olefins for UV initiated10 single-crystal-to-single-crystal [2+2] photodimerizationreactions. The racemic crystals produce inversion relatedcyclobutane products, while the desymmetrized crystallinearchitectures of the homochiral phase promote asymmetricphotodimerization with 90% conversion.

Insight Into Volatile Behavior At Nyamuragira Volcano (D.R. Congo, Africa) Through Olivine-Hosted Melt Inclusions, Elisabet M. Head, Alison M. Shaw, Paul J. Wallace, Kenneth W. W. Sims, Simon A. Carn Oct 2011

Insight Into Volatile Behavior At Nyamuragira Volcano (D.R. Congo, Africa) Through Olivine-Hosted Melt Inclusions, Elisabet M. Head, Alison M. Shaw, Paul J. Wallace, Kenneth W. W. Sims, Simon A. Carn

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

[1] We present new olivine-hosted melt inclusion volatile (H20, C02, S, Cl, F) and major element data from five historic eruptions ofNyamuragira volcano (1912, 1938, 1948, 1986, 2006). Host-olivine Mg#'s range from 71 to 84, with the exception of the 1912 sample (Mg# = 90}.lnclusion compositions extend from alkali basalts to basanite-tephritcs. Our results indicate inclusion entrapment over depths ranging from 3 to 5 km, which agree with independent estimates of magma storage depths (3-7 km) based on geophysical methods. Melt compositions derived from the 1986 and 2006 Nyamuragira tephra samples best represent pre-eruptive volatile compositions because these samples contain …

Historic And Contemporary Trends Of The Conservation Reserve Program And Ring-Necked Pheasants In South Dakota, Chris Laingen

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Over the past century, the interactions between agricultural land use and government cropland retirement programs have affected pheasant population change. Two government land retirement programs that returned croplands to grasslands, Soil Bank in the 1960s and the current Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), help to illustrate these connections. From 2007 to 2010, South Dakota lost 41% of its CRP lands and experienced an 18% decline in pheasants per mile. However, because of where CRP expirations have occurred and where pheasant populations are found , some regional variability is seen. Western South Dakota (Region 1) had an 80% increase in pheasants per …

Performance Modeling Of Distributed Collaboration Services, Toqeer A. Israr, Gregor V. Bochmann Jan 2011

Performance Modeling Of Distributed Collaboration Services, Toqeer A. Israr, Gregor V. Bochmann

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

This paper deals with performance modeling of distributed applications, service compositions and workflow systems. From the functional perspective, the distributed application is modeled as a collaboration involving several roles, and its behavior is defined in terms of a composition from several sub-collaborations using the standard sequencing operators found in UML Activity Diagrams and similar formalisms. For the performance perspective, each collaboration is characterized by a certain number of independent input events and dependent output events, and the performance of the collaboration is defined by the minimum delays that apply for a given output event in respect to each input event …

Enantiocontrolled Solid-State Photodimerizations Via A Chiral Sulfonamidecinnamic Acid, Kraig A. Wheeler, Joshua D. Wiseman, Rebecca C. Grive Jan 2011

Enantiocontrolled Solid-State Photodimerizations Via A Chiral Sulfonamidecinnamic Acid, Kraig A. Wheeler, Joshua D. Wiseman, Rebecca C. Grive

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

The supramolecular patterns of three polymorphs of a chiral sulfonamidecinnamic acid reveal components effectively organized into predetermined hydrogen-bonded dimers with favorable <3.8A ° olefin spacing for enantioselective single-crystal-to-single-crystal [2 + 2] photodimerization reactions.
