Using the Rapid Catchment Appraisal process, this report summarises current information for the Yarra Yarra Catchment, Northern Agricultural Region in Western Australia. The Rapid Catchment Appraisal (RCA) process is one of the processes included in the strategy to tackle salinity and its management in Western Australia. The RCA process provides a 'snap shot' of information on the risk and impact to agricultural production and natural resources within regional geographic catchments.

The Scott Coastal Plain has significant attributes that make it an area of State and regional significance for agricultural production. The climate, availability of good quality groundwater for irrigation, and large lot sizes provide opportunities for mechanised horticultural production which other parts of the State may not have.

An assessment of current and possible future land use in Western Australia was undertaken as part of the National Land and Water Resources Audit. This data was used to assess the impact of land use change on the future extent of salinity. It was found that in some areas there is real capacity for changing land use to impact on recharge to the watertable.

This report presents results from soil and landform mapping at a scale of 1:150,000 in the Katanning area of Western Australia. It is accompanied by two soil-landscape maps covering 1.45 million hectares in the Kojonup and Darkan area (map 1) and the Katanning and Dumbleyung area (map 2). Most of the Katanning survey occurs within the Blackwood River catchment but also covers the upper catchments of the Pallinup, Frankland-Gordon and Tone-Warren Rivers. The Katanning survey falls within the Narrogin and Katanning advisory districts for Agriculture Western Australia. Due to a variety of factors, including infrastructure needs, labour requirements and transport costs, horticulture is normally located near major urban centres. This study focuses on the coastal plain region from Gingin to Augusta. This region accomodates over 80% of Western Australia's population and includes the States major urban centres. This region also accounts for over half the State's horticultural production with a gross value of production of $244 million.

This report covers about 94,700 square kilometres of rangelands in the Sandstone-Yalgoo-Paynes Find area of Western Australia. The area lies within 27°S and 30°S latitudes, and 115°30'E and 120°E longitudes and includes the towns of Sandstone, Yalgoo and Paynes Find. The northern, southern, and eastern limits of the survey area are largely defined by the boundaries of the 1:250,000 scale series map sheets.The western limit is the boundary between the pastoral and agricultural area.

The inventory and condition survey of the Sandstone-Yalgoo-Paynes Find area, undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) between 1992 and 1993, describes and maps the natural resources of the region’s pastoral leasehold land. This survey report provides a baseline record of the existence and condition of the area’s natural resources, to assist with the planning and implementation of land management practices. The report identified and described the condition of soils, landforms, vegetation, habitat, ecosystems, and declared plants and animals. Soils of approximately 80,000 hectares in the West Gingin area, 100 km north of Perth, were surveyed from 1987 to 1989. The area lies on the Swan Coastal Plain within the Gingin Shire. The soils were mapped by the free survey method at a scale of 1:50,000. Thirty-five major soil associations and complexes were identified. These soils have been formed from various parent materials in a a range of depositional environments. Siliceous sand and sodic soils formed in alluvial-lacustrine sediments predominate. This report presents descriptions to accompany land resource maps of the Wellington- Blackwood district, east of Bunbury in the south-west of Western Australia. The maps cover an area of about 760,000 hectares and are presented as two map sheets at a scale of 1:100,000. Four different physiographic zones cover the survey area: • The Western Darling Range Zone occupies the major portion of the area and consists of a deeply dissected lateritic plateau overlying crystalline rocks. Mount Beaumont Mount Beaumont is approximately 100 km north-east of Esperance in the south-east of Western Australia. In 1982 an area of 35,000 ha of virgin Crown Land was released for agriculture (identified as Mount Beaumont Stage I) and later it was proposed to release a further 33,600 ha (Mount Beaumont Stage II). Following development of the first stage, doubts arose about the suitability of the soils for agriculture, so the Department of Agriculture (now Agriculture Western Australia) surveyed the soils of the Mount Beaumont Stage II area before further land release. The information should be used as a guide, and encourage the user to seek further information through the relevant people and organisations.

The Jerdacuttup catchment on the south coast of Western Australia has a number of significant land degradation problems. A soil-landform map of the catchment was produced at a scale of 1:50,000. The map units are a combination of landform and soil type. A land capability assessment was undertaken for five land uses; improved annual pastures, perennial pastures, lucerne, cereal cropping and lupins, using a five class classification.

Leschenault Peninsula is a fragile coastal dune barrier north of Bunbury, Western Australia. Most of the landforms are highly, or potentially highly, unstable and are not capable of sustaining tourism uses other than walking tracks. Minor areas close to Leschenault Inlet are more stable and could be developed for a range of tourism uses including accommodation and day tripper facilities.
