Transient transmission oscillations in X-cut and Z-cut congruent, iron-doped, and magnesium-doped lithium niobate samples were measured using 50 fs, 800 nm, 0.5 nJ pulses from a self-mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser in an optical pump–probe system. Several Raman-active oscillation modes excited by these pulses were observed as changes in the transmitted probe intensity versus time delay between the pump and probe pulses. The samples were rotated to determine how the incident polarization of the pump pulses affects the mode excitations. The observed Raman-active oscillations correspond to previously reported symmetry modes measured with traditional, continuous-wave, Raman spectroscopy using the same scattering …

As AI becomes ever more competent and integrated into our lives, the issue of AI-human goal misalignment looms larger. This is partially because there is often a rift between what humans explicitly command and what they actually mean. Most contemporary AI systems cannot bridge this gap. In this study we attempted to reconcile the goals of human and machine by using EEG signals from a human to help a simulated agent complete a task.

In my experiment, I used the telescopes at the Saint John’s Observatory to measure the brightness of three stars that were expected to have exoplanets orbiting them. I was unable to take enough data on two of the stars, but was able to confirm the existence of an exoplanet around the third, HD189733.

Solitary waves occur in many mediums, both on Earth and in space. These waves are a single isolated wavelength or half wavelength of a full wave. This research focuses on observing these waves at the Earth’s magnetopause, the region around Earth where the Earth’s magnetic field controls the motion of particles. This research applies a Gaussian function to model solitary waves in Mathematica, utilizing electric potential data gathered by NASA’s Polar spacecraft. The goal of the research discussed in this paper is to demonstrate that N-heterocyclic carbenes can be bonded to a transition metal center resulting in a complex that is able to effectively catalyze the ring opening polymerization of caprolactone. While N-Heterocyclic carbene ligands have been documented as effective catalysts for the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones and lactides, less is known about the catalytic abilities of these ligands when bound to a labile metal center. We built a Farnsworth-Hirsch fusor in order to study neutron emission from nuclear fusion. Its construction involved a mechanical roughing pump, an oil diffusion pump, a vacuum chamber, a high negative-polarity power source, and a bubble dosimeter neutron detector. To determine the efficiency of the fusor we look at the neutron emission flux and the power input. We then compare those results to obtain a ratio of power input versus the power output by the fusor.

Multi-copper oxidases possess an unusual triangular copper complex; ceruloplasmin is an example. Ceruloplasmin oxidizes iron from the ferrous state to the ferric state, assisting in iron transport. This oxidn. is coupled with the redn. of dioxygen to water, the mechanism of which is unclear. In order to elucidate more the mechanism of redn., this study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of a novel copper (I) complex with a new tapma-based ligand. This tapma ligand is modeled after the tris (2-pyridylmethyl) amine-based (tpma) ligand family where nitrogen based donors are employed. Dynamic Reflectivity And Transmissivity Measurements Of Black Phosphorus Flakes, Matthew Stiller

We studied the dynamic reflectivity and transmissivity of black phosphorus flakes using a pump/probe laser system. The flakes were excited with femtosecond laser pulses, ~60fs, in order to observe how the optical constants changed with respect to time delay. The relaxation time period of the excited charge carriers was calculated to be ~200-300fs during transmission measurements. Reflectivity measurements had shown longer time periods but could not be calculated due to limitations of the experimental setup. Future improvements to the system’s temporal range will be able to provide more detailed information about the longer lifetimes.

This study investigates the impact of climate change on marginalized populations , and seeks to understand the strategies of climate activists from so-called Least Developed Countries, particularly small island nations, for influencing climate policy on the global stage. I conducted participant observation and interviews at the UNFCCC’s COP 21 in Paris, in order to understand how marginalized populations anticipate the future, solutions they have to mitigate the harmful effects of climate change, and how they saw themselves being represented at the conference.

The desire to teach a computer how to algorithmically compose music has been a topic in the world of computer science since the 1950’s, with roots of computer-less algorithmic composition dating back to Mozart himself. One limitation of algorithmically composing music has been the difficulty of eliminating the human intervention required to achieve a musically homogeneous composition. Scientific workflows for high-performance computing (HPC) are becoming increasingly complex. Developing a way to simplify these workflows could save many hours for both HPC users and developers, potentially eliminating any time spent managing software dependencies and experiment set-up. To accomplish this, we propose using two programs together: Docker and Spack. Docker is a container platform and Spack is a package manager designed specifically for HPC. In this paper, we show how Docker and Spack can be used to containerize the extreme-scale Scientific Software Development Kit (xSDK). We argue that U.S. sociologists have been woefully remiss in incorporating the climate crisis into our research agendas and even more, into our teaching. After laying out the gravity of the situation we issue a call for sociologists to consider whether they wish to continue this striking denial of responsibility to our students and to knowledge production. We then present four ways that we have infused our understanding of climate change, climate crisis, and climate justice into courses on global issues, social movements, inequality, and much more.
