Applicability Of Bispectral Analysis To Unstable Plasma Waves, Renaud Stauber Jan 1995

Applicability Of Bispectral Analysis To Unstable Plasma Waves, Renaud Stauber

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

A program to implement a spectral analysis technique called the bispectrum was written and tested with computer generated time series data. The application of the algorithm to the study of nonlinear interactions was demonstrated by a comparison of computed quantities with results from model equations found in the literature. Specifically determined were: the amplitude and phase of coupling coefficients, the power transfer function, the fraction of power associated with nonlinear coupling, and the identification of waves involved in a quadratic coupling interaction. A method of distinguishing the two parent waves from the daughter wave in this three-wave interaction is proposed …

Some Issues In The Sliding Mode Control Of Rigid Robotic Manipulators, Sanjay Rao Jan 1995

Some Issues In The Sliding Mode Control Of Rigid Robotic Manipulators, Sanjay Rao

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis investigates the problem of robust adaptive sliding mode control for nonlinear rigid robotic manipulators. A number of robustness and convergence results are presented for sliding mode control of robotic manipulators with bounded unknown disturbances, nonlinearities, dynamical couplings and parameter uncertainties. The highlights of the research work are summarized below : • A robust adaptive tracking control for rigid robotic manipulators is proposed. In this scheme, the parameters of the upper bound of system uncertainty are adaptively estimated. The controller estimates are then used as controller parameters to eliminate the effects of system uncertainty and guarantee asymptotic error convergence. …

Duality On Noncompact Manifolds And Complements Of Topological Knots, Gerard A. Venema Jan 1995

Duality On Noncompact Manifolds And Complements Of Topological Knots, Gerard A. Venema

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Let be the image of a topological embedding of into. In this paper the homotopy groups of the complement. are studied. In contrast with the situation in the smooth and piecewise-linear categories, it is shown that the first nonstandard homotopy group of the complement of such a topological knot can occur in any dimension in the range 1 through n - 2. If the first nonstandard homotopy group of the complement occurs above the middle dimension, then the end of must have a nontrivial homotopy group in the dual dimension. The complement has the proper homotopy type of if both …

Computer Modelling Of A Dynamical Water Molecule, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers

A model of a ground state water molecule is formulated dynamically and studied by computer simulations. The enigmatic 104.5° bond angle is approximated by introducing the effects of neighboring molecules in a crystaline state. The numerical methodology used conserves the system energy at all times. Illustrative examples are described and discussed.

Phosphorus Bearing Substrates In Ring Expansion Reactions, Bradley K. Norwood Jan 1995

Phosphorus Bearing Substrates In Ring Expansion Reactions, Bradley K. Norwood

Theses and Dissertations

A variety of substituted phosphonium salts, phosphorus ylides and phosphonates were studied to assess their utility in ring expansion reactions. The strategy involved formation of fused ring systems whose ring strain could be exploited to accomplish ring expansion to medium sized rings. β-Alkoxy vinylphosphonium salts were found to be unreactive with species such as the dimethylsulfoxonium methylide anion, Simmons-Smith type reagents. and carbenes in attempts to produce cyclopropyl phosphonium salts.

C-Alkylation of β-keto phosphorus ylides using haloalkanes bearing terminal groups that could be converted and reacted with the B-carbonyl, was also examined as a method for accessing strained rings bearing …

Thermohaline Structure Of An Eddy-Resolving North Atlantic Model: The Influence Of Boundary Conditions, John M. Klinck Jan 1995

Thermohaline Structure Of An Eddy-Resolving North Atlantic Model: The Influence Of Boundary Conditions, John M. Klinck

CCPO Publications

A T-S volumetric census, with a resolution of 0.2 degrees C and 0.1 psu, for years 20-25 of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment Community Modeling Effort eddy-resolving simulation of the equatorial and North Atlantic Ocean, reveals how the thermohaline character of the model has changed from the initial conditions, which were taken from the Levitus climatology. Any changes in the thermohaline structure, other than stirring, mixing, or geostrophic adjustment of smoothed climatology, must be due to the boundary conditions, which are imposed at the surface and at four sponge layers (northern boundary, southern boundary, Labrador Sea and Mediterranean Sea), where …

The Galician shelf off NW Spain (43N degrees 9W degrees) exhibits mesoscale spatial and temporal changes in biological productivity associated with upwelling. Spatial heterogeneity results from local geomorphic and land-sea interactions superimposed on the large scale atmospheric processes that produce upwelling. Wind-induced upwelling events, commonly of short (i.e., week) duration, are more common in the summer than in the winter. A Series of cruises, including some time series sampling, and satellite imagery analysis showed that surface upwelling was more common and persistent on the northern coast compared with the western coast off the coastal embayments, the Rias Bajas. Nearshore off …

Current Meter Observations In The Old Bahama Channel, L. P. Atkinson, T. Berger, P. Hamilton, E. Waddell, K. Leaman, T. N. Lee Jan 1995

Current Meter Observations In The Old Bahama Channel, L. P. Atkinson, T. Berger, P. Hamilton, E. Waddell, K. Leaman, T. N. Lee

CCPO Publications

Current meter observations were made at 50, 250, and 435 m in 495 m of water at the center of the Old Bahama Channel between November 1990 and November 1991. The mean speed at those depths was 2.6, 50, and 26 cm s-1 toward the Straits of Florida. A maximum speed of 193 cm s-1 was found at the 250-m level. There was evidence of a speed maximum between 50 and 250 m. Large internal diurnal tidal currents were observed that produced high shears in the water column under some conditions. Transport calculated from the single mooring using …

Transport, Potential Vorticity, And Current/Temperature Structure Across Northwest Providence And Santaren Channels And The Florida Current Off Cay Sal Bank, Kevin D. Leaman, Peter S. Vertes, Larry P. Atkinson, Thomas N. Lee, Peter Hamilton, Evans Waddell Jan 1995

Transport, Potential Vorticity, And Current/Temperature Structure Across Northwest Providence And Santaren Channels And The Florida Current Off Cay Sal Bank, Kevin D. Leaman, Peter S. Vertes, Larry P. Atkinson, Thomas N. Lee, Peter Hamilton, Evans Waddell

CCPO Publications

Currents and temperatures were measured using Pegasus current profilers across Northwest Providence and Santaren Channels and across the Florida Current off Cay Sal Bank during four cruises from November 1990 to September 1991. On average, Northwest Providence (1.2 Sv) and Santaren (1.8 Sv) contribute about 3 Sv to the total Florida Current transport farther north (e.g., 27°N). Partitioning of transport into temperature layers shows that about one-half of this transport is of ''18°C'' water (17°C-19.5°C); this can account for all of the ''excess'' 18°C water observed in previous experiments. This excess is thought to be injected into the 18°C layer …

On The Minimum Of Independent Geometrically Distributed Random Variables, Gianfranco Ciardo, Lawrence Leemis, David Nicol Jan 1995

On The Minimum Of Independent Geometrically Distributed Random Variables, Gianfranco Ciardo, Lawrence Leemis, David Nicol

Arts & Sciences Articles

The expectations E[X(1)], E[Z(1)], and E[Y(1)] of the minimum of n independent geometric, modified geometric, or exponential random variables with matching expectations differ. We show how this is accounted for by stochastic variability and how E[X(1)]/E[Y(1)] equals the expected number of ties at the minimum for the geometric random variables. We then introduce the “shifted geometric distribution”, and show that there is a unique value of the shift for which the individual shifted geometric and exponential random variables match expectations both individually and in …

Results are reported on observations obtained with the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) of 17 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) known to exhibit blazar properties at other wavelengths. These observations span the period from 1991 June through 1994 May. Of the 33 high-confidence EGRET detections of blazars during CGRO observing phases 1 and 2 (1991 May 16-1993 September 7), OSSE has observed eight and detected five, namely 3C 273, 3C 279, PKS 0528+134, CTA 102, and 3C 454.3. Additionally, OSSE has detected the BL Lac sources H1517+65.6 and PKS 2155-304, which were not …

Ultraviolet Temporal Variability Of The Peculiar Star R Aquarii, S. R. Meier, Menas Kafatos Jan 1995

Ultraviolet Temporal Variability Of The Peculiar Star R Aquarii, S. R. Meier, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

This paper is a comprehensive study of all far-UV spectra obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite of the symbiotic star R Aquarii (R Aqr) covering a 13 yr period between 1979 and 1992. We have analyzed the ultraviolet emission for the compact H II region and the NE and SW extended "jetlike" filamentary structures. The results of our ultraviolet analysis indicate that the H II region and features A, B, and D of the NE jet are increasing in intensity, while the SW counterjet, feature A', has declined in intensity. We have found much stronger evidence that the …

Multiwavelength Observations Of Markarian 421 During A Tev/X-Ray Flare, D. J. Macomb, C. W. Akerlof, H. D. Aller, M. F. Aller, D. L. Bertsch, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

A Te V flare from the BL Lac object Mrk 421 was detected in May of 1994 by the Whipple Observatory air Cherenkov experiment during which the flux above 250 GeV increased by nearly an order of magnitude over a 2-day period. Contemporaneous observations by ASCA showed the X-ray flux to be in a very high state. We present these results, combined with the first ever simultaneous or nearly simultaneous observations at Ge V gamma-ray, UV, IR, mm, and radio energies for this nearest BL Lac object. While the GeV gamma-ray flux increased slightly, there is little evidence for variability …

Mcplib: A Collection Of Nonlinear Mixed Complementarity Problems, Steven P. Dirkse, Michael C. Ferris Jan 1995

Mcplib: A Collection Of Nonlinear Mixed Complementarity Problems, Steven P. Dirkse, Michael C. Ferris

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The origins and some motivational details of a collection of nonlinear mixed complementarity problems are given. This collection serves two purposes. Firstly, it gives a uniform basis for testing currently available and new algorithms for mixed complementarity problems. Function and Jacobian evaluations for the resulting problems are provided via a GAMS interface, making thorough testing of algorithms on practical complementarity problems possible. Secondly, it gives examples of how to formulate many popular problem formats as mixed complementarity problems and how to describe the resulting problems in GAMS format. We demonstrate the ease and power of formulating practical models in the …

A General Theory Of Geodesics With Applications To Hyperbolic Geometry, Deborah F. Logan Jan 1995

A General Theory Of Geodesics With Applications To Hyperbolic Geometry, Deborah F. Logan

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the geometry of curved surfaces is studied using the methods of differential geometry. The introduction of manifolds assists in the study of classical two-dimensional surfaces. To study the geometry of a surface a metric, or way to measure, is needed. By changing the metric on a surface, a new geometric surface can be obtained. On any surface, curves called geodesics play the role of "straight lines" in Euclidean space. These curves minimize distance locally but not necessarily globally. The curvature of a surface at each point p affects the behavior of geodesics and the construction of geometric …

Interaction And Interdependency Of Software Engineering Methods And Visual Programming, Robert A. Touchton Jan 1995

Interaction And Interdependency Of Software Engineering Methods And Visual Programming, Robert A. Touchton

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Visual Programming Languages and Visual Programming Tools incorporate non-procedural coding mechanisms that may duplicate, or perhaps even conflict with, the analysis and design mechanisms promulgated by the mainstream Software Engineering methodologies. By better understanding such duplication and conflict, software engineers can take proactive measures to accommodate and, ideally, eliminate them. Better still, there may be opportunities for synergy that can be exploited if one is looking for them.

This research explored, documented and classified the interactions and interdependencies, both positive (synergies) and negative (conflicts), between two closely related and rapidly evolving Computer Science subdisciplines: software engineering and visual programming. A …

A Study Of Voluntary Participation In Computer User Groups, Alan Engels Jan 1995

A Study Of Voluntary Participation In Computer User Groups, Alan Engels

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine ways to increase participation of members in Computer User Groups. The problem addressed was that a small select group, less than ten percent, in the Parsons Apple/Macintosh Users Group was doing ninety-five percent or more of the work. If this scenario does not change soon, the overworked and overburdened select few may suffer burnout and quit. Case in point, Joplin, MO, had a large Computer User Group, but about seven years ago, it vanished when the select few refused to serve anymore. The same process of decay and erosion has happened in …

Novel Compounds (Including Transition-Metal Complexes) Based On 1,10-Phenanthroline-5,6-Dione, Hui Zhou Jan 1995

Novel Compounds (Including Transition-Metal Complexes) Based On 1,10-Phenanthroline-5,6-Dione, Hui Zhou

Masters Theses

This thesis describes the synthesis of the transition metal complex [(bpy) 2OsII (pptd)] (PF6)2·2H2O, an analog of [(bpy) 2RuII (pptd)] (PF6)2·2H2O. Spectroscopic and electrochemical data on this complex are reported here. It was found that the electronic communication between the metal center and the pteridinedione portion of pptd did not appear to be enhanced in the Os(II) complex relative to its Ru(II) analog. The increased ability of Os(II) to undergo backbonding appeared to affect only the 1,10-phenanthroline portion of pptd.

A useful …

Impacts Of Irrigation Development On Anadromous Fish In The Yakima River Basin, Washington, Robert L. Tuck Jan 1995

Impacts Of Irrigation Development On Anadromous Fish In The Yakima River Basin, Washington, Robert L. Tuck

All Master's Theses

Prior to Euroamerican development, the Yakima River Basin was a major producer of salmon. Total runs of approximately 800,000 have declined to 3,000-5,000, or less than 1% of original run size. Three species are extinct in the basin, including summer chinook, coho, and sockeye.

Irrigation development, including the construction of unscreened diversions, the blockage of spawning and rearing habitat by reservoir dams, and the dewatering of spawning and rearing habitat, began in the mid-1800's and today totals approximately 500,000 acres. Historical records provide a wealth of information documenting irrigation development and its consequences on anadromous fish populations.

Isomerization And Chelation Studies Of Dangling Phosphine Complexes Of Group 6, Zhongjiang Jia Jan 1995

Isomerization And Chelation Studies Of Dangling Phosphine Complexes Of Group 6, Zhongjiang Jia

Masters Theses

Vinyl addition reactions, catalyzed by 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN), have been used to prepare six pentacarbonyl complexes of group 6, each of which contains a dangling Ph2PCH2CH2P(p-tol)2 ligand.

Each of the six complexes undergoes slow isomerizationand chelation at 55 °C in perdeuterated toluene:

The reactions were monitored by 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy. The isomerization reactions are reversible in solution, while the chelated products form irreversibly with the loss of carbon monoxide. The rate constants, K1 and K-1, have been determined for the three pairs of linkage isomers. Equilibrium …

The Synthesis Of N-Chlorosulfonyl Β-Lactams And Their Rearrangements, Lihua Zhang

Masters Theses

The synthesis of several N-chlorosulfonyl-β-lactams and their rearrangements have been carried out via CSI (chlorosulfonylisocyanate) reaction. The mechanism of β-lactam synthesis as well as its rearrangements were also studied. The characterization of β-lactams was performed with IR, 1H and 13C NMR, and HRMS. β-lactams 2-chlorosulfonyl-1-methyl-2-azabicyclo[4.2.0]octan-3-one (71), 1-chlorosulfonyl-4-methyl-4- (phenylmethyl)azetidin-2-one (74) and 1-chlorosulfonyl-4,4- (diphenylmethyl)azetidin-2-one (75) were synthesized for the first time. β-lactam 4-chlorosulfonyl-3, 9, 9-trimethyl-4-azatricyclo [6.1.0.03,6] nonan-5-one (73) was obtained as crystalline solid instead of liquid.

Different effects, such as temperature, solvents and catalysts, on the rearrangement of the …

Karst In Siliceous Rocks - Karst Landforms And Caves In The Auyàn-Tepui Massif (Est. Bolivar, Venezuela), Leonardo Piccini

International Journal of Speleology

During the expedition "Tepuy 93", six caves were explored in the precambrian quartzites of Roraima Group, in the Auyan-tepui massif. One of this caves reaches the depth of 370 m and a development of almost 3 km; its name is “Sima Auyan-tepui Noroeste” and it is currently the deepest cave in the world discovered in siliceous rocks The geological and morphological study of this cave has underlined again the importance of deep solutional weathering, along the network of fractures for the formation of caves in siliceous rocks. The different formation stages of the big superficial shafts, called “simas” were observed …

The Classification Of Cave Minerals And Speleothems, Carol A. Hill, Paolo Forti Jan 1995

The Classification Of Cave Minerals And Speleothems, Carol A. Hill, Paolo Forti

International Journal of Speleology

The classification scheme of Hill and Forti, as used in the second edition of Cave Minerals of the World, is presented as a "practical" solution to the classification of cave minerals and speleothems. Classification and naming of cave minerals is by crystal class and follows nomenclature approved by the International Mineralogical Association. Classification of speleothems is based on morphology and whatever is known about origin, with division of speleothems into types, subtypes, and varieties. It is proposed that new speleothem types, subtypes, and names be approved by a UIS Commission of cave mineralogists.
