Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1989 Annual Summary, Bruce J. Barber

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts surveys of oyster spatfall (or "setting") in Virginia waters throughout the summer reproductive period. This survey provides an estimate of the potential of a particular area for receiving a "strike 11 or set of oysters on the bottom and helps define the timing of setting events. Information obtained by this effort is valuable to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) for its shell repletion program, and to private oyster growers, both of whom are interested in maximizing the timing of shell planting. Relativistic And Non-Relativistic Nuclear Charge Form Factors, Tao Wang

This thesis presents an examination that the two nuclear charge form factors, relativistic and non-relativistic, are equivalent approximately in an appreciable range. The relativistic one is contributed by both vector charge density and tensor charge density. And the non-relativistic charge form factor is contributed by the nuclear densities from experimental electron scattering cross section, these densities are fundamental to much of nuclear structure physics.

The Dirac equation is used to calculate the vector charge density and tensor density, because the charge density from the analysis of the experimental data may be compared with proton charge densities obtained from various models …

Adiabatic Population Transfer In A Three-Level System Driven By Delayed Laser Pulses, J. R. Kuklinski, U. Gaubatz, Foek T. Hioe, K Bergmann

We give a simple analytic solution that describes a novel method for population transfer in a three-level system driven by delayed pulses and which accounts for recent experimental results. This solution describes a procedure that is counter intuitive, and yet it is shown to be, in fact, one of the simplest solutions for multilevel systems arising from the adiabatic theorem. Its possible application to many-level systems is suggested.

Species Richness Gradients Of Oak Forest Plants Along The Missouri River In Nebraska And Iowa, Steven B. Rolfsmeier

The upland deciduous forests of the Missouri River valley contain many plants typical of forests to the east of this area, which are assumed to have migrated northward and westward along the river in postglacial times. Previous workers have reported a gradient of decreasing species richness upstream among woody species, which is suggested to be the result of climatic gradients and differential dispersal capabilities of the immigrant species. Floristic work on all vascular species in eight woodland sites along the Nebraska-Iowa border quantifies the presence of similar gradients for herbaceous species, but of differing degrees. Photometric and spectral observations of the variable star HR Aurigae are presented. Based on these data we conclude that this star, previously regarded as a type II Cepheid, is, in fact, an active binary.

The Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH) sampled 149 residential wells producing from glacial drift and Saginaw Formation aquifers in Bay, Midland, Saginaw, and Tuscola counties in 1987. These wells were analyzed for ²²⁶Ra, ²²⁸Ra and general chemistry. Of the 149 samples, 50 exceeded the USEPA MCL of 5 pCi/L or greater for combined ²²⁶Ra + ²²⁸Ra activities. A geochemical model (WATEQF, Plummer et al., 1976) was used to determine activity coefficients, activities, ionic strength, and mineral saturation. Production systems, also called rule-based systems, are very useful in automating certain human expert tasks, but the current technology exhibits many problems. We believe that parallelism is difficult to exploit in production system programs for two reasons. First, the original serial programs are designed with a priori knowledge of an explicit global control mechanism which must be simulated for correct execution in parallel. The second reason for the difficulty is that no formal language exists in which to express these programs and no verification techniques are utilized to prove properties which guarantee correct execution in parallel. The finite spatial coherence width of sunlight at the Earth imposes restrictions on the production of scattering phenomena based on the interference of light waves. With the spatial coherence properties of sunlight taken into account, the visibility of the supernumerary rainbow sequence adjacent to the primary rainbow and the radii of the water droplets that produce the optimum glory intensity were calculated. A substantial reduction was found in the contrast of all the supernumeraries beyond the first few, and the peak observability of the glory occurred for water droplets with radii between 10 and 20 µm.

Two co—occurring deciduous forest myrmecochores, Asarum canadense and Jeffersonia diphylla, release their seeds at approximately the same time, and therefore potentially compete for ants as dispersers. Within a single woodlot, we placed seeds of both species inside a dense Jeffersonia population away from Asarum plants, inside a dense Asarum population away from Jeffersonia plants, and in a site where plants of neither species occurred. No preference was exhibited by ants where natural populations were absent. Preference at the other two sites was frequency dependent: ants preferred seeds of the introduced species. The U. S. Geological survey recently used the method of residuals to delineate seven flood regions for the State of Kentucky. As an alternative approach, the FASTCLUS clustering procedure of the Statistical Analysis system (SAS) is used in this study to delineate five to six cluster regions in conjunction with statistical properties of the AMF series, like the coefficient of variation as estimated using method of L-moments, LCV, the parameters of the EVl and GEV flood frequency distributions, and the specific mean annual flood, QSP. The classical trajectory Monte Carlo method (CTMC) has been used to calculate doubly differential ionized-electron cross sections for the impact of He2+ and H+ on He at collision energies of 50 and 100 keV amu-1. The results exhibit the capture to the continuum peak and agree in both shape and magnitude with experimental data. The dependence of the cross sections on the projectile charge ZP is analyzed and it is found to be very asymmetric with regard to the capture to the continuum peak. The shape of the energy distribution of scattered particles in an active beam scattering experiment can be influenced considerably by the presence of highly charged impurity ions in the plasma. In this work it is shown theoretically that multiply charged impurities have only a small effect on the scattering distribution at low energies (/amu) and at high energies (>75 keV/amu). The effect of the impurities is the most pronounced for energies close to 50 keV/amu. The results of the calculations are in good agreement with experimental results at various energies. Extrapolation to higher beam energies leads to the conclusion …

Topographic And Volcanic Asymmetry Around The Red Sea: Constraints On Rift Models, Timothy H. Dixon, Erik R. Ivins, Brenda J. Franklin

The Red Sea rift is asymmetric, with the locus of uplift and Tertiary volcanism in Saudi Arabia, 200–400 km east of the present rift axis. One model for this asymmetry involves simple shear extension on an east dipping, low-angle master fault that penetrates the lithosphere. Uplift and volcanism would mark the location where the fault enters the asthenosphere. However, observed seismicity, regional heat flow, and sedimentation are not in accord with this model's predictions. An alternate model involves interaction of upwelling asthenosphere in the early rifting stage with a nearby crustal weak zone such as a suture that controls rift …

This thesis explores the nature and content of a comparative data base for the Zapotec languages of Mexico that may be produced.
