A Relativistic One Pion Exchange Model Of Proton-Neutron Electron-Positron Pair Production, William A. Peterson

Proton-neutron electron-positron pair production cross sections are calculated in the framework of the pseudoscalar one-pion exchange model in a fully relativistic manner.

A computer program has been developed to evaluate invariants and Dirac traces for a given data point.

The sections for symmetric coplanar events for laboratory kinetic energies of 10 to 250 MeV were calculated for pair angles of 20° to 120°.

Frequency distributions were also calculated, at a laboratory energy of 200 MeV, using a random number generator to select data points. The frequency distributions are illustrated by curves.

Mineral And Chemical Content Of The Deep-Water Sediment Sequences Of Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho, James C. Biesinger

Twenty-five piston cores 6 to 12 feet long were obtained from the deepwater sediments of Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho. Analyses of these cores revealed that the deep-water sediments of the lake are divided into two major sequences: a younger sequence rich in carbonate minerals, here called the carbonate sequence, and an older sequence rich in silicate minerals, referred to in this paper as the silt sequence. The carbonate sequence is composed of clay-sized quartz, aragonite, calcite, dolomite, montmorillonite, illite, kaolinite, chlorite, and amorphous material. A Comparison Of Consumer's Surplus And Monopoly Revenue Estimates Of Recreational Value For Two Utah Waterfowl Marshes, C. Holden Brink

Demand curves were estimated for waterfowl hunting and nonconsumptive recreational use from use rate and variable expenditure data collected at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area during fiscal 1969. Consumer's surplus and monopoly revenue estimates were then derived from the demand functions. Adjusted estimates of consumer's surplus for waterfowl hunting amounted to $7,260 per year at Bear River and $11,400 per year at Farmington Bay. For nonconsumptive recreation annual consumer's surplus was estimated to be $18,700 at Bear River and $3,760 at Farmington Bay. Monopoly revenue estimates were between one-half and one-fourth the …

Missing data in regression is often a problem to research workers because standard regression methods are applicable only to complete data sets. At present there are three general methods for solving the problem of missing data.

At first, the reduced data method, reduces the incomplete data set to a complete data set before analyzing. Although this method is very simple to apply, substantial amounts of information are sometimes lost when data is eliminated. This results in less precise estimates of the regression parameters.

Partial correlation, multiple correlation, canonical correlation, principal component and factor analysis are used to analyze the dependence structures of a multinormal population.

For a partial correlation analysis it is necessary to decide which variables are to be correlated and which of the remaining variables must be held constant.

Multiple correlation demands that one variable be dependent upon some or all of the remaining variates.

The performance of three baffled model ponds was monitored and compared to the performance of an unbaffled model pond utilizing four hydraulic and organic loading rates. All four ponds were operated simultaneously under the same environmental conditions using a synthetic wastewater.

Removal of organic carbon by the biological system in the different pond configurations only varied from 94-98 percent at the longest detention time (15 days); however, a considerable effect of the baffling was observed at the lower detention times. At a hydraulic detention time of 1.5 days the percent carbon removal was 53, 60, 62, and 70 percent for …

Carbon Interstitial In The Diamond Lattice, C Weigel, David Peak, J W. Corbett, R P. Messmer, G D. Watkins

Linear-combination-of-atomic-orbitals-molecular-orbitals cluster calculations using the extended Hückel theory are carried out for the interstitial carbon in the diamond lattice. The results suggest that the interstitial configuration is not the tetrahedral or hexagonal site, as has been previously assumed, but is instead an "interstitialcy" configuration, i.e., either a split- 〈100〉 interstitial (which our results favor) or a bond-centered interstitial. The predicted minimum-energy configuration changes with charge state, suggesting that the interstitial in the diamond lattice is a possible example of the Bourgoin mechanism of athermal migration of a defect in the presence of ionizing radiation.

A streamflow simulation model which would reproduce the essential feature of the hydrologic regime of a semi-arid region, in this case Jordan, was developmed and described. The model is intended to fit conditions which exist in such a region. The hydrologic processes components which represent the evaporation and the base flow distinguish the Jordan model from others. Development of each function of the model and its constants was based on all the minimal amount of data available. one year of data was used to calibrate the model for Wadi Zerqa watershed. Accompanying the increased use of water resources is an increases accumulation of chemical pollutants. Te prevent degradation of the water resources beyong useful limits, pollution inputs from additional uses must be quite accurately predicted prior to implementation of the new use. Ionization‐Enhanced Diffusion: Ion Implantation In Semiconductors, J Bourgoin, David Peak, J W. Corbett

A model for the diffusion of implanted interstitials during implantation is introduced and shown to be able to account for the tails observed in ion profiles. It is argued that mechanisms of ionization‐enhanced diffusion can explain some of the anomalous diffusion mechanisms observed in semiconductors. Indications for the existence of such mechanisms in the field of ion implantation in semiconductors are discussed.

An extensive compiliation and general evaluation of the literature is presented which describes the temperature interaction with toxicity. Recent literature is summarized and made accessible along with a few generalized relationships such that researchers may design studies in a manner that will increase the utility of their results. A detailed indexing system is employed which makes the information contained in the report accessible by author, toxicant, and text organism. A continuous ice-crystal replicator was modified by the addition of a gear drive to the cating wheel. This modification utilizes a positive drive force on the coating wheel rather than the friction force between the coating wheel and the film. The coating wheel operates successfully for at least 12 hours without slippage or damage to the film. Studies have uncovered several deficiencies in the replicator design which could be corrected. The correction of these deficiencies would lead to an improved quality of ice-crystal replicas. The need for continued studies in the fluid properties of Formvar solution is pointed out. A mass balance simulation model for sorption in a packed bed reactor was developed. All of the terms in the model, consisting of constants of the porous media, and functions, were evaluated by independent laboratory studies. The kinetic term was determined in Part I. Two numerical schemes (an explicit scheme and an implicit scheme respectively) with corresponding computer programs were developed and made operational. They were not tested against laboratory column results due to long times necessary on the computer and corresponding high costs. The 1963 Utah State Legislature authorized the Utah Water and Power Board (now the Utah Division of Water Resources) to develop a state water plan in order to give coordination and direction to the activities of all state and federal agencies concerned with Utah's water resources. Six proposed rate equations for sorption kinetics have been investigated by laboratory batch experiments involving some 270 individual “runs” to determine sorption uptake with time for varying conditions of initial sorbate concentration, temperature, and sorbent species. The sorbate selected was rhodamine-B dye, used because it will sorb readily and is easily measured. Two sorbents, Dowex 50 resin, and Filtrasorb 200 activated carbon were used. Temperature conditions were 10, 20, 30, and 40°C, and concentrations ranged from .0008 to 400 micrograms per ml, rhodamine-B.
