Paul Feder Observatory Upgrades And Exoplanet And Variable Star Data, Mara Derung, Tanner Weyer, Emily Watson Apr 2023

Paul Feder Observatory Upgrades And Exoplanet And Variable Star Data, Mara Derung, Tanner Weyer, Emily Watson

Student Academic Conference

Before the upgrade to the dome and telescope, much of the work to use the telescope was done manually. One had to drive an hour round trip to the observatory at dusk and dawn to ensure that the telescope started up and shutdown properly. Proper startup included manually opening the lower dome flap via hand crank and briefly plugging in the top part of the dome to raise the upper slit. Shutting down the telescope during the summer required a person to be at the telescope by 5:00AM, before sunrise to make sure that the dome closed before the sun …

Sheltered Math Curriculum For Middle School English Learners, Jasmine Ercink May 2022

Sheltered Math Curriculum For Middle School English Learners, Jasmine Ercink

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Language barriers have shown a need for differentiation and sheltered instruction in the classroom for English Learners (ELs) to be successful in the United States public school system. This project proposes a mathematics curriculum using SIOP so that both groups of students in the middle school level can increase their proficiency in the mathematics content area as well as experience opportunities for academic and social language development. The purpose of this report is to describe the processes, methods, data, and intent of the mathematics curriculum for these learners. The curriculum acts as an effective intervention to fill gaps in both …

The Impact Of Academic Tracking And Mathematics Self-Concept On Mathematics Achievement., Kain M. Schow May 2022

The Impact Of Academic Tracking And Mathematics Self-Concept On Mathematics Achievement., Kain M. Schow

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

ABSTRACT

This study examines the effects of academic tracking, in high school math, on students’ mathematics self-concept (MSC) and how that correlates to students’ mathematics achievement. This study measured students’ MSC through a mathematics self-concept questionnaire and measured mathematics achievement by the students’ latest grade report. Participants included 60 students in grades 10-12 who had been or were currently enrolled in math courses in the researcher’s school district. The data collected will direct the researcher and school administration on the effects of academic tracking on students, allowing for further discussion about continuing tracking in the district.

A Quantitative Study Of An Online Learning Platform’S Impact On High School Students' Engagement, Academic Achievement, And Student Satisfaction In A Mathematics Class, Mariah Minkkinen May 2022

A Quantitative Study Of An Online Learning Platform’S Impact On High School Students' Engagement, Academic Achievement, And Student Satisfaction In A Mathematics Class, Mariah Minkkinen

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

The present study investigated the impact using the online learning platform Pear Deck had on an online high school math class. The study measured student engagement, academic achievement, and students’ overall satisfaction with using the online learning platform. The participants in this study were online Algebra 2 students. The study was conducted during synchronous online lessons using an online learning system. Data was collected from two different live classes. One class used the online learning platform Pear Deck and the other did not. Engagement was measured by charting the number of student responses for each question posed. Students’ academic achievement …

Halfway: The Legacy Of Civilian Conservation Corps Company #704, Maxibillion Thompson Apr 2022

Halfway: The Legacy Of Civilian Conservation Corps Company #704, Maxibillion Thompson

Student Academic Conference

Civilian Conservation Corps Company #704 began operations in 1933 approximately 10 miles southeast of Ely, MN, based at the site known as Halfway Camp F-1. This presentation explores some of the legacy they left in the region in the form of ecological projects and recreational structures, as well as the few remaining signs of their former camp on the shores of Birch Lake.

Exploring Ai And Multiplayer In Java, Ronni Kurtzhals Apr 2021

Exploring Ai And Multiplayer In Java, Ronni Kurtzhals

Student Academic Conference

I conducted research into three topics: artificial intelligence, package deployment, and multiplayer servers in Java. This research came together to form my project presentation on the implementation of these topics, which I felt accurately demonstrated the various things I have learned from my courses at Moorhead State University. Several resources were consulted throughout the project, including the work of W3Schools and StackOverflow as well as relevant assignments and textbooks from previous classes. I found this project relevant to computer science and information systems for several reasons, such as the AI component and use of SQL data tables; but it was …

The Introduction Of Big Data In Cloud Computing, Austin Gruenberg Jan 2021

The Introduction Of Big Data In Cloud Computing, Austin Gruenberg

Student Academic Conference

One of the fastest-growing technologies that many people are unaware of is the world of cloud computing. Having started in 2006, it is a relatively new technological advancement in the computer industry. The major branch of cloud computing that I decided to focus on was big data. I decided to research this topic to better understand what its current uses are, to see what the future holds for Big Data and cloud computing and because it is a growing, significant piece of technology being used in our society today. Big data and cloud computing are very important industries and have …

Integrating The Bullet Physics Engine Into Minecraft, Ethan Johnson Jan 2021

Integrating The Bullet Physics Engine Into Minecraft, Ethan Johnson

Student Academic Conference

During the past fall semester, I started a programming project called Rayon which is designed to be a realistic physics engine implementation that runs alongside the videogame Minecraft. It is a library which Minecraft mod developers can use to implement realistic entity movement into their own mods. Rayon, being entirely written in the Java programming language, currently uses a port of the Bullet physics engine called JBullet which is very outdated and no longer being maintained. To find a more performant solution, I have set out to replace JBullet with an alternative library called LibBulletJME which is designed to interface …

Voxel Optimization, Scott Bengs May 2020

Voxel Optimization, Scott Bengs

Student Academic Conference

Voxel Optimization This poster presentation covers optimization for voxels. They can be thought of as three dimensional pixels. Vo coming from volume and xel from pixel. Voxels are just values placed in a 3D grid. Voxels have many interesting uses in the medical and scientific field, especially in geology. One use in computer science is storing world information for video games or graphical applications. One very popular example is Minecraft, a game that allows all of the world to be changed, that uses cube shaped voxels. The first topic will be on the naive approach of building a model from …

Smart Raspberry Pi Puppy, Vy Dao May 2020

Smart Raspberry Pi Puppy, Vy Dao

Student Academic Conference

Many people use computers and smart devices on the Internet of Thing (IoT) networks without truly understanding how they work or what they can do. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to demonstrate how edge devices used gateways to connect to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) IoT platform and show what the AWS IoT platform can do. For this project, a Raspberry Pi 4 will act as a Gateway for the robot that connects all the camera sensors, motion sensors, and temperature sensors to transfer those data to the AWS IoT platform for analytic purposes. The robot will have …

Raspberry Pi Ai Assistant, Cole Tharaldson

Student Academic Conference

Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistants are nearly everywhere you look in today’s society. With the use of a Raspberry Pi computer and the Google Application Programming Interface (API), an AI assistant can be created. Much like Google Home, this AI assistant can help people with everyday tasks, such as handling requests, controlling smart devices, answering questions, or even telling jokes.
