The Effect Of Ferrous And Ferric Ions On The Conversion Of Malate To Pyruvate By A Cell Free Extract Of Pigeon Liver, Keith Erwin Richardson

Recent investigations on the crude pigeon liver extracts have shown the presence of an enzyme which catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of malate to pyruvate and carbon dioxide. The name malic enzyme has been given to this enzyme to distinguish it from malic dehydrogenase. Under aerobic conditions the addition of ferrous sulfate resulted in inhibition of the action of malic enzyme. Subsequent investigation showed that the inhibition obaerved was not due to ferrous ions, but due to ferric ions which were contaminating the ferrous sulfate. It was also shown that under aerobic conditions ferrous ions were rapidly oxidized to ferric ions. …

The problem of colorimetrically determining rhenium in the presence of molybdenum, copper, iron, sulphur, and rare earth elements with the use of dimethylglyoxime as the complexing compound was accomplished by the method reported here-in. The interfering elements were eliminated either as gaseous oxides and sulfides or were precipitated from a highly basic solution by means of a strong alkaline fusion of equal weights of sodium hydroxide and sodium peroxide, and the ore sample containing rhenium. The fusion product was dissolved in water, the solution boiled with a slight excess of sodium peroxide, and the hydroxide of all the interfering ions …

The object of the work presented in this thesis was to obtain quantitative values of the thermodynamic changes in water upon adsorption by kaolinite. Two methode were used. The first was a determination of the differential heat content and entropy of adsorption. The second method included a thermodynamic evaluation of the B.E.T. "c" constant expressed in terms of the Gibbs standard free energy of adsorption. The experimental data gave satisfactory results in determining the differential and standard thermodynamic functions or free energy, entropy, and heat content of adsorption. Previous work done at the Brigham Young University by Andelin^1, Roberts^2, and Olsen^3, has established the mechanism by which xanthate collectors are adsorbed on molybdenite ores to produce the hydrophobic surfaces necessary for flotation. This thesis is an attempt to better understand the mechanism by which the silicate minerals, which are found in conjunction with the ores, become hydrophyllic and as a result are not floated when in contact with air bubbles. A process of column chromatography of human erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase, using a cationic exchange resin, was investigated as a possible method for the primary partial purification of the enzyme on a large scale. The investigation was based, first; on a detailed study of the enzymatic stability to variation in hydrogen-ion and salt concentrations for periods of time extending to forty eight hours and, second; on an investigation of the degree of adsorption by the resin of the enzyme at various pH values within the pH range of enzyme stability. There are interesting formations of extinct volcanoes. Fossils can be found and well marked evidences of an ancient lake named Bonneville.

This work represents a study of the biological oxidation of copper sulfide minerals. The principal objective of the study was to determine the extent of bacterial oxidation on copper containing sulfide minerals. It was also desired to determine if the bacteria could oxidize copper sulfides in the absence of iron. A better understanding of the nitrogen requirements of the organisms was desired. Minerals used in this study were Bingham Canyon Float Concentrate, chalcopyrite, covellite, calcocite, bornite, tetrahedrite, and reagent grade copper sulfide. Adsorption of cations by clays has been a subject of investigation for many years. Many proposals have been advanced to explain this process of adsorption. Two proposals have been prominent in recent years. The Marshall "charged lattice" theory attributes adsorption of cations by clays to an electrostatic attration of the clay particles for cations. This charge on the clay particles is attributed to various isomorphic substitutions in the lattice of the clay which result in an unbalanced charge on the particle. A long term research program into the chemistry of quinoxalines has been instituted at Brigham Young University with the aim of preparing the vinylquinoxalines so that their 1,4-addition reactions might be studied. The literature of quinoxaline chemistry has been thoroughly reviewed and assembled. Methods of preparing 2-methyl- and 2,3-dimethylquinoxaline have been studied and improved but all attempts to prepare the vinylquinoxalines have been unsuccessful. In the course of these attempts several compounds of unknown structure were prepared. This dissertation involves a study of the collector-depressant equilibria of the flotation system potassium ethyl xanthate-potassium cyanide-molybdenite, based upon mineral-air bubble contact measurements made by a modified captive bubble technique. The Cook theory of single site free acid adsorption is used to interpret the data. The standard free energies of adsorption of ethyl xanthic acid and hydrocyanic acid on molybdenite are calculated.

The present investigation was also made with the object of preparing the vinylquinoxalines and studying their 1,4- addition reactions. The attempts to prepare vinylquinoxalines were unsuccessful. However, sodium acetylide reacted with 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline to give a new compound which (from its analysis and properties) appears to be 2,3-bis(1-hydroxyethyl) quinoxaline . This new compound should be investigated further , as it may prove to be an intermediate in the preparation of vinylquinoxalines. Methods of preparation of 2,3-dimethyl- and 2- methylquinoxaline were studied and improved. The bromination of 2,3-dimethylquinoxaline using N-bromosuccinimide was accomplished and an anil addition using quinoxaline and phenyllithium was achieved. The problem consists of measuring accurately the free energy of formation, heat of formation, entropy, and solubility product constant of silver and mercury sulfides, and is a part of a larger study extending to many other metal sulfides. The confusion now existing in the chemical literature amply justifies a study of this nature. The thermodynamic properties of several important metal sulfides have never been measured, and the only values available for them are estimates. Determinations of the properties of many other metal sulfides have been carried out, but the results given by different authors often differ widely.

A non-destructive analysis of the hydrocarbon minerals is essential to their wise utilization. Chromatography represents a non-destructive means of separating adsorbable substances non-destructively with a high degree of purity. The chromatographic separation is based upon the simple principle of the difference in adsorption affinity of compounds for a particular adsorbent. Although many compounds have been prepared which contain the heterocyclic nucleus known as the quinoxaline nucleus, very little fundamental experimentation has been reported by way of expanding the chemistry of quinoxaline beyond the basic condensation reaction and its valuable use as a means of characterization, for example, the reaction of vicinal diketones with o-phenylenediamine. Clay minerals have widespread application in industry and play an important role in plant life (2, 17). It is the adsorptive capacity of clay which determines largely its importance to man (2). The purpose of this investigation is to interpret the mechanism of adsorption of the phosphate anion by the two clay minerals montmorillonite and kaolinite. This particular system was singled out for two reasons: 1. It has agricultural significance. 2. It is believed that if the particular phosphate adsorption mechanism is understood it will aid in an understanding of many other adsorption phenomena associated with clay.

The object of this investigation was to determine whether or not a certain sample of raw resin, collected by Mr. Adriaan Nagelvoort from coal from Huntington Canyon, Emery County, Utah, could be separated into more than one fraction with each fraction having distinctly different properties. Three methods of separation were attempted: (l) Separation of specific gravity fractions, (2) separation by use of solvents, and (3) chromatographic separation. Properties determined as a means of establishing any differences in the resins were: solubility, softening points, acid numbers, and iodine numbers.

The carbethoxylation product of p-aminoacetophenone with diethyl carbonate by means of sodium amide has been proved to be ethyl p-acetylphenylcarbamate instead of ethyl p-aminobenzoylacetate. Thus the amino group was shown to be more active than the methyl ketonic. group tow ard carbethoxylation. Attempt at further carbethoxylation of this carbamate were unsuccessful.

The majority of evidence indicates that iodine is an essential element in plant and animal nutrition. It functions particularly in animal metabolism in the form of thyroxine. This investigation was carried out for general chemistry classes in which recitation and laboratory work are closely integrated and in which very close supervision is given to laboratory classes. Results indicate that there are fewer failures under these conditions if students do individual work. Students receiving grades of over 80% seem to work just as effectively in pairs as they do when working individually, but about 5% who fail when working in pairs could, apparently obtain grades above 60% if they did individual work.
