Construction Of A Lithium Vapor Oven For Electron Capture And Multiple Ionization Experiments, Oliver Woitke Aug 1992

Construction Of A Lithium Vapor Oven For Electron Capture And Multiple Ionization Experiments, Oliver Woitke

Masters Theses

A Li vapor oven, to be used as a source of Li target atoms in electron capture and multiple ionization experiments, was designed and installed in the beamline of the Van de Graaff accelerator at Western Michigan University. The oven was tested using two different projectile beams, protons and He+. The test results indicate that Li evaporated from the oven in the form of a cloud rather than as a jet spray. For He+ colliding with Li it was found that the projectile single-electron loss yield is about three orders of magnitude larger than the single-electron capture yield, as expected …

Prediction Of Paper Color: A Process Simulation Approach, Mayank Chaturvedi Jun 1992

Prediction Of Paper Color: A Process Simulation Approach, Mayank Chaturvedi

Masters Theses

A simulation model was developed for a dye mixing process and for the prediction of the optical properties of the paper. The model was integrated with the MAPPS (Modular Analysis of Pulp and Paper Systems) simulation software package. The model was validated using dyed handsheets made in a laboratory and dyed paper made on a pilot papermachine. Validation comprised of prediction of the optical properties of the handsheets and the machine-made paper which contained various combinations of three non-fluorescent dyes. Sheet reflectances were predicted at 20 nanometer intervals for discrete light wavelength range of 400 to 700 nanometers and verified …

Double Differential Cross Sections For State-Selective Electron Capture By Low-Energy Ar4+ And Ar5+ Ions From He And Ar, Serefettin Yaltkaya Jun 1992

Double Differential Cross Sections For State-Selective Electron Capture By Low-Energy Ar4+ And Ar5+ Ions From He And Ar, Serefettin Yaltkaya

Masters Theses

Doubly differential cross sections, in angle and energy, for state-selective single-electron capture from He and Ar by Ar4+ and Ar5+ ions have been studied experimentally at laboratory impact energies of 25q, 50q, and lOOq eV (q = 4 and 5, where q is the ion charge state) and at laboratory scattering angles between 0° and 5.5°, by means of translational energy spectroscopy. The translational energy-gain spectra show that only a few final states are selectively populated. Final-state transition probabilities were found to depend strongly on the charge state of the projectile ion and the ionization potential of the …

Single And Double Ionization Of Helium By Highly Charged Sulfur Ions, Karen M. Lifrieri Apr 1992

Single And Double Ionization Of Helium By Highly Charged Sulfur Ions, Karen M. Lifrieri

Masters Theses

Single and double ionization of helium by highly charged sulfur projectiles is investigated over an energy range of 0.16 to 1.6 MeV/u. Absolute cross sections for the processes of pure ionization, ionization associated with single capture, and ionization associated with single loss by S6,13+ projectiles were experimentally determined and compared with previous results and theories. Ratios of double-tosingle ionization for each outgoing projectile charge state were also determined and compared with theory. The pure ionization ratios for S6+ at the highest energies investigated show the q2/E dependence predicted by Knudsen et al. (1984). For S13+ …

Resonant Electron Transfer And K-Shell Excitation Of Lithiumlike Projectiles In Collisions With Molecular Hydrogen, M. Anwar Kamal Dec 1991

Resonant Electron Transfer And K-Shell Excitation Of Lithiumlike Projectiles In Collisions With Molecular Hydrogen, M. Anwar Kamal

Masters Theses

An experimental investigation of resonant transfer and excitation (RTE) for collisions of Mg9+ (lithiumlike) projectile ions with a molecular hydrogen gas target has been made. The experimental cross sections for projectile K-shell x rays coincident with electron capture in the energy of 33- to 60-MeV are found to be in good agreement with theoretical RTE calculations. The present results confirm the agreement between experiment and theory which has been reported for RTE involving K-shell excitation for projectiles with atomic numbers between 9 and 92 incident on H2 and He targets.

Cross sections for total K-shell x-ray production and …

Eta Photoproduction Via 2H(Γη)2H*, Yan Zhang Aug 1991

Eta Photoproduction Via 2H(Γη)2H*, Yan Zhang

Masters Theses

The reaction H(γη)2H* is studied using the impulse approximation. A recent fit to the H(γη)2H* elementary amplitude is employed in the calculation. The n-p final state is described by Reid's soft core potentials. The calculation shows very different cross sections for the final isospin 0 and isospin 1 break-up channels. The S11 resonance is demonstrated to dominate the eta cross sections in the 740 MeV photon laboratory energy region. Fermi motion in the deuteron does not significantly spread the effect of the S11 . All these results demonstrate that the reaction H(γη) …

Inhibited Spontaneous Emission By Photonic Band Gaps In A Square Lattice Of Periodic Dielectric Medium, Abdullah Al-Ghamdi Aug 1991

Inhibited Spontaneous Emission By Photonic Band Gaps In A Square Lattice Of Periodic Dielectric Medium, Abdullah Al-Ghamdi

Masters Theses

The concepts of band theory for electrons can be employed to describe the behavior of electromagnetic waves propagating in two-dimensional, periodic dielectric structures. These two-dimensional, periodic structures can produce photonic band gaps in which the spontaneous emission by atoms embedded in the structure is prohibited and as a result the performance of many semiconductor devices can be enhanced. The calculations are based on finding the eigenvalues of the algebraic equation for the frequencies of electromagnetic waves moving in a square lattice composed of square dielectric rods with different dielectric constants.

A Valence Quark Model, Tony A. Forest Jun 1991

A Valence Quark Model, Tony A. Forest

Masters Theses

A quark model of the baryons has been developed for calculating properties of nucleons which can be useful in nuclear interactions. A Hamiltonian, motivated by QCD, was diagonalized in a harmonic oscillator basis. In addition to predicting the proton charge radius and Delta-Nucleon mass difference, this work also yields a value of the axial vector coupling constant which compares well with experiment. Electric and magnetic form factors represent the major success of this model. The electromagnetic transitions predicted by this model compete well with other models but are not able to reproduce experimental results completely. The advantage of this model …

Double Ionization Of Helium By Intermediate To High Velocity He+ Projectiles, Jun Forest Jun 1991

Double Ionization Of Helium By Intermediate To High Velocity He+ Projectiles, Jun Forest

Masters Theses

Ionization of helium target atoms by He+ projectiles colliding with helium at energies of 0.125 to 3.0 MeV/u is investigated. Cross sections for single and double ionization, and ratios o f double-to-single ionization are determined for each outgoing projectile charge state, and are compared to previous studies. For the lowest energies investigated, the ratios are consistent with the two-step mechanism in which the projectile interacts separately with each target electron. At the highest energies, the ratios reach nearly constant values indicating approach to the high velocity limit. At these high energies, however, the ratios are all higher than the …

Resonant Electron Transfer And K-Shell Excitation Of FQ+ (Q=6,8) In Collisions With Neutral He And H2 Targets, Konstantinos E. Zaharakis Jun 1991

Resonant Electron Transfer And K-Shell Excitation Of FQ+ (Q=6,8) In Collisions With Neutral He And H2 Targets, Konstantinos E. Zaharakis

Masters Theses

Measurements of resonant transfer and excitation (RTE) were conducted for 16.5-38 MeV F6+ (Li-like) ions colliding with H2. In the RTE process electron capture and projectile excitation take place simultaneously due to the electronelectron interaction. In previous work, for the same collision system, at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Oak Ridge, TN) , the magnitude of the measured RTE cross sections was found to be nearly a factor of two smaller than theory. In order to investigate RTE in F6+ H2 collisions more completely, we undertook measurements at Western Michigan University using the EN tandem …

Anderson Localization Effects In The Light Transmitted Through A Rough Thin Metal Film, Naimah Mohd. Shafie Apr 1991

Anderson Localization Effects In The Light Transmitted Through A Rough Thin Metal Film, Naimah Mohd. Shafie

Masters Theses

The theory of Anderson localization is used to study transmission enhancements in the diffusely transmitted light through a rough thin metal film. These transmission enhancements arise due to phase coherent effects associated with Anderson localization of surface polaritons and are manifested as a well-defined peak in the angular distribution of the intensity of the diffuse component of the transmitted light for light moving opposite to the specularly reflected beam.

The dependence of the widths and heights of the localization related transmission peak is investigated with computer programming and calculations by McGurn and Maradudin (1989). The peak is found to depend …

Relativistic And Non-Relativistic Nuclear Charge Form Factors, Tao Wang Dec 1989

Relativistic And Non-Relativistic Nuclear Charge Form Factors, Tao Wang

Masters Theses

This thesis presents an examination that the two nuclear charge form factors, relativistic and non-relativistic, are equivalent approximately in an appreciable range. The relativistic one is contributed by both vector charge density and tensor charge density. And the non-relativistic charge form factor is contributed by the nuclear densities from experimental electron scattering cross section, these densities are fundamental to much of nuclear structure physics.

The Dirac equation is used to calculate the vector charge density and tensor density, because the charge density from the analysis of the experimental data may be compared with proton charge densities obtained from various models …

Calculation Of Electron Scattering For 4He In A Continuum Shell Model, Ming Yu Dec 1989

Calculation Of Electron Scattering For 4He In A Continuum Shell Model, Ming Yu

Masters Theses

Calculations for the electroexcitation of the 4He, O+ state have been performed within the context of recoil corrected continuum shell model. Approximations previously employed for inelastic scattering with the recoil corrected continuum shell model are eliminated in the work. The O+ state exhausts only 10% of the energy weighted sum rule and previous shell model calculations for the excitation of this state produce about ten times too much strength. This difficulty is alleviated by the use translationally invariant wave functions and the application of continuum boundary conditions for this particle unbound state. The structure of the O+ state is …

Recoil Corrected Continuum Shell Model Form Factor Calculations For 4He(E,E’)4He(0+), Jiang Yu Aug 1988

Recoil Corrected Continuum Shell Model Form Factor Calculations For 4He(E,E’)4He(0+), Jiang Yu

Masters Theses

Charge form factor calculations for the electroexcitation of the 4He, 0+ state have been performed within the context of the recoil corrected continuum shell model. A pure Os4 ground state structure is assumed and full internal coordinate recoil corrections are made. The result is compared with available data. It is demonstrated that the 0+ state may be described in a 1p -1h shell model context. Inclusion of nsOs-1 ground state correlations is suggested for further research.

The Relationship Of Pore Volume And Pore Size Distribution To The Development Of Gloss And Scattering Coefficient, John A. Cook Jun 1988

The Relationship Of Pore Volume And Pore Size Distribution To The Development Of Gloss And Scattering Coefficient, John A. Cook

Masters Theses

This study describes in a quantitative manner the relationships between coating structure and optical properties. Gloss, scattering coefficient and void volume were measured after applying different blends of polystyrene spheres to mylar film. Each coating was modeled using large spherical particles of the same size ratios to measure pore size distribution. The coating structure followed well with theoretical packing characteristics of spheres. Optical properties were related to changes in coating structure. Scattering coefficient and gloss correlated better with pore size distribution than particle size. Gloss increased when total void volume was reduced, while the scattering coefficient decreased.

Single-Electron Capture And Loss Cross Sections Vs. Target Z For 1 Mev/U Oxygen Ions Incident On Gases, Scott Avery Boman Jun 1988

Single-Electron Capture And Loss Cross Sections Vs. Target Z For 1 Mev/U Oxygen Ions Incident On Gases, Scott Avery Boman

Masters Theses

Cross sections for 1 MeV/u oxygen projectile ions which have gained or lost an electron after passing through a gas target were measured as a function of target Z for several incident projectile charge states. The targets used were D2, He, Ne, Ar and Kr, and the projectiles had charges of 5+, 6+, 7+ and 8+.

The electron capture measurements are generally in reasonable agreement with existing theoretical and empirical scaling rules. The electron loss cross sections differ appreciably from predictions of the PWBA, particularly for the heaviest targets studied. Empirical scaling relationships are derived for the present capture …

A Study Of An Integral Equations For Computing Radial Distribution Functions, Noraini Ismail Apr 1988

A Study Of An Integral Equations For Computing Radial Distribution Functions, Noraini Ismail

Masters Theses

A two parameter integral equation, equation T is studied to compute radial distribution functions for a classical fluid whose single component particles interact pairwise according to a square-well potential function. A computer program originally written for a DEC 10 was modified to run on a DEC VAX. At the same time, modifications were made to take advantage of the faster VAX and to reduce the time an operator must spend to get a solution to the integral equation. Solutions were obtained for several densities, temperatures, and parameter values. Temperatures ranged from a high temperature gas to near critical temperatures. Accurate …

Hypernuclear Photoproduction Via (Γ,K*), Kimberly Ann Hodgkinson

Masters Theses

The nuclear (γ,K*) reaction is studied using plane wave impulse approximation (PWIA) and a distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA), which includes full Coulomb and optical distortions. The model and calculations for each model are presented. For 12C(γ K*)12B, the two approximation methods are compared at 2 energies: 1.47 Gev/c and 1.84GeV/c. 208Pb(γ, K*)208 i s a lso examined. Distortion effects are found to greatly alter the magnitude of the cross sections, but the shape of the angular distributions remains. the same. Conclusions suggest further study.

Thermodynamics Of The Diluted Spin Heisenberg Chain With Single Ion Anisotropy, Salmah Ahmed Dec 1987

Thermodynamics Of The Diluted Spin Heisenberg Chain With Single Ion Anisotropy, Salmah Ahmed

Masters Theses

The thermodynamics of the one-dimensional diluted Heisenberg magnet of classical spins in the presence of single ion anisotropy is calculated. The magnetization, susceptibility, energy and specific heat are determined as functions of the magnetic concentration and single ion anisotropy for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings. Spin-spin correlation functions and the elastic scattering are also calculated for various values of anisotropy and spin concentration for the ferromagnetic system.

A Study Of Ion Implanted Silicon Using Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy With Ion Channeling, Thomas J. Pollock

Masters Theses

Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy with channeling is the only nondestructive method for analyzing crystals which have been ion implanted. An RBS with channeling procedure has been established at the Accelerator Lab of Western Michigan University. It utilizes a tandem Van de Graaff accelerator for an incident helium beam, a goniometer for crystal alignment, and a computer for experimental control and data aquisition. State of the art measurements can be made with accuracies comparable to other labs. Specifically, ion implanted silicon was studied wherein crystal damage due to implanting was found to vary directly with implanting energy and fluence and was also …

Theoretical Thermodynamic Properties Of Low Temperature Fluids, Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal Dec 1987

Theoretical Thermodynamic Properties Of Low Temperature Fluids, Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal

Masters Theses

The thermodynamic functions for low temperature fluids are computed using parametric integral equations and perturbation theory. Parametric integral equation N is applied to a low temperature Lennard-Jones gas. It is found that there is no significant improvement over the better known parametric integral equation C. The two parameter integral equation T is applied to a low temperature square-well potential and is found to be unsatisfactory at reduced temperatures of T*= 1.4 and 1.6, but quite accurate at T* = 2.2. The equation T results for T* = 2.2 are used as the reference system in perturbation theory computations. Tables of …

Effects Of A Magnetic Field On The Thermodynamics Of Dilute Classical Spin Chains, Guoqing Hu Dec 1987

Effects Of A Magnetic Field On The Thermodynamics Of Dilute Classical Spin Chains, Guoqing Hu

Masters Theses

The thermodynamics of a diluted chain of ferromagnetic classical spin in the presence of an external magnetic field is determined in the limit of the continuum model. The magnetization, susceptibility, specific heat are determined for both the isotropic Heisenberg and the classical XY models as functions of temperature, magnetic field and magnetic concentration. Scaling law for the behavior of the thermodynamic quantities in field, temperature, and magnetic concentration are obtained.

The calculations will be based on the continuum model of classical spin which was solved for the infinite chain system by McGurn and Scalapino.

Testing Of Beam Line For Charge Exchange Measurements, Mohd. Noor Ali Apr 1987

Testing Of Beam Line For Charge Exchange Measurements, Mohd. Noor Ali

Masters Theses

The atomic physics beam line in the Western Michigan University accelerator laboratory was tested for the first time for making atomic charge-exchange experiments. Cross sections obtained for single electron capture and loss for 25 MeV oxygen ions incident on a helium gas target are in reasonable agreement with previous measurements. These results indicate that the system is operating properly. An attempt to observe a nuclear resonance effect on electron capture and/or loss was not successful. However, it was determined that additional collimation is necessary for such measurements.

A Study Of The Direct Capture Process Of Protons By 27Al, Rozana Hussain Apr 1987

A Study Of The Direct Capture Process Of Protons By 27Al, Rozana Hussain

Masters Theses

An experimental investigation of the 27Al(p,γ)28Si reaction was made for protons in the energy range 550- to 1785-keV and at angles of 0, 20, 55, 90 and 118 degrees. Four angular distributions at Ep = 845-, 1055-, 1135-, and 1618-keV were selected for detailed study. These angular distributions were fit with theoretical calculations employing a directcapture model. These fits permitted the extraction of spectroscopic factors for the population of the first excited-state in 28Si by proton transfer.

Determination Of Phenomenological Optical Model Parameters For Neutrons On 208Pb From 4 To 150 Mev, Randy L. Schutt

Masters Theses

Phenomenological o p tic a l model parameters for neutrons incident on 208Pb have been determined for neutron energies from 4 to 150 MeV using the code SNOOPY-8. Neutron total cross sections from 4 to 150 MeV and angular distributions for elastic scattering from 13.5 to 40.0 MeV were utilized. Analyses of total and differential cross sections were performed at a number of energies to determine energy dependent expressions for the real strengths of the central potential, imaginary surface potential, and imaginary volume potential. These energy dependent expressions for V, Wd, and WS were found to …

Further Studies On Purification Of A Mannitol Binding Protein: Use Of Ph Gradients For Elution From Cation Exchange Resin, Kristyne Ann Baumgarten Aug 1986

Further Studies On Purification Of A Mannitol Binding Protein: Use Of Ph Gradients For Elution From Cation Exchange Resin, Kristyne Ann Baumgarten

Masters Theses

Studies on the purification of a mannitol binding protein (MBP) from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO were performed. Utilizing the alkaline isoelectric point (pi 8.3) of MBP, pH gradients were used to elute MBP from carboxymethylcellulose cation exchange resins. Purification of MBP was monitored by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylam ide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Only one protein band was seen on SDS-PAGE from MBP fractions elutedat pH 7-8 and 8 .2. Although pH gradients appear to give good purification from cation exchange resins, these procedures lead to loss of MBP activity.

A Study Of Classical Elastic Scattering For Heavy-Ion Nuclear Reactions, John C. Orrison

Masters Theses

Numerical computer programs were developed to calculate the classical elastic scattering orbits, deflection functions and differential scattering cross-sections for a heavy-ion nuclear reaction model.

Critical points of the deflection functions and differential scattering cross-sections were examined.

Semiclassical modifications were developed for future study to account for the phase relation between independent orbits that lead to the same scattering direction.
