How Stubble Affects Organic Matter, Plants And Animals In The Soil, Judy Tisdall
How Stubble Affects Organic Matter, Plants And Animals In The Soil, Judy Tisdall
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Cereal yields have not increased greatly in Australia over the past 30 years and they are still only about half the potential determined by rainfall. One of the reasons for these low yields is our fragile soils, worsened by traditional systems of tillage and the burning of stubble. These systems reduce the levels of organic matter and biological activity in soil

Nonfederal Automated Weather Stations And Networks In The United States And Canada: A Preliminary Survey*, Steven J. Meyer, Kenneth G. Hubbard
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Not all weather data are collected by federal agencies. Fueled by the need for more specific meteorological data in real or near-real-time, the number of automated weather stations (AWSs) and AWS networks has expanded to the state and private sector over the past decade. This study employed a survey to determine the spatial extent and disposition of these nonfederal AWSs and AWS networks in the United States and Canada, the type of measurements taken, the operating procedures (i.e., maintenance and data-retrieval techniques), and the uses of the data (e.g., research, public service, agency needs). The rapid growth and expansion in …

The compositing technique used to derive global vegetation index (NDVI) from the NOAA-AVHRR radiances, reduces the residual effect of water vapor and aerosol on the NDVI. The reduction in the atmospheric effect is shown using a comprehensive measured data set for desert conditions, and a simulation for grass with continental aerosol. A statistical analysis of the probability of occurrence of aerosol optical thickness and precipitable water vapor measured in different climatic regimes is used for this simulation. It is concluded that for a long compositing period (e.g. 27 day), the residual aerosol optical thickness and precipitable water vapor is usually …
Ectoparasitism As A Cause Of Natal Dispersal In Cliff Swallows, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown
Ectoparasitism As A Cause Of Natal Dispersal In Cliff Swallows, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Nestling Cliff Swallows (Hirundo pyrrhonota) in southwestern Nebraska that were relatively heavily parasitized by hematophagous fleas (Ceratophyllus celsus) and swallow bugs (Oeciacus vicarius) dispersed to nonnatal colonies to breed the subsequent year, whereas nestlings that were relatively lightly parasitized returned to their natal colony to breed. There were no significant differences between dispersers and nondispersers in natal clutch size, natal brood size, relative hatching date, natal body mass, natal nest's distance from the colony's center, and natal nest's age. There were no sex differences in dispersal tendencies. Dispersing birds tended to move to smaller colonies …

Population Status And Characteristics Of Macrhybopsis Gelida, Platygobio Gracilis And Rhinichthys Cataractae In The Missouri River Basin, Selena J. Werdon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Few sturgeon chub (Macrhybopsis gelida: Cyprinidae) have been collected in the last decade, therefore their status, habitat selection and morphology were investigated at 172 previous collection sites. Data on two ecologically similar species, Platygobio gracilis and Rhinichthys cataractae, were also collected. Macrhvbopsis gelida were collected at 28 sites on the Powder River (n = 158) in Wyoming and Montana, and at one site on the Yellowstone River (n = 1) in Montana. Age-I, Age-II and Age-III M. gelida were collected. Specimens were 37 to 95 mm in total length. Macrhvbopsis gelida were ripe in mid-June, at water temperatures of 18.3-22. …

Restoration, Nourishment And Stabilization At Browning Beach, South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Robert Lee Gass
Restoration, Nourishment And Stabilization At Browning Beach, South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Robert Lee Gass
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Browning Beach is situated on the south shore of Rhode Island just to the west of Matunick. Midway along the barrier beach connecting Green Hill Point and Matunick Point is a narrow strand separating Card's Pond from Block Island Sound. Five homes were built along this section of the barrier beach in the early 1930's. At that time, the homes were situated near the back property lines. Aerial photographs indicate the primary dune system was well established and densely vegetated. After sixty years of shoreline retreat, most of which has taken place in the last seventeen years, the primary dune …
Mitigation Banking: A Potential Tool For Port Planners, Laura Kelley
Mitigation Banking: A Potential Tool For Port Planners, Laura Kelley
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Mitigation banking has been used as a means of facilitating the permit process by removing the negotiation of appropriate mitigation for development from the confines of the permit process. A developer with frequent needs to mitigate for losses associated with Section 404 and Section 10 requirements may, using a mitigation bank, consolidate mitigation and in so doing, potentially reduce mitigation costs. As a result of route maintenance, as well as expansion requirements, ports were considered to be good candidates for sponsoring mitigation bank efforts. Port use of mitigation banking has not been as expected due to a lack of available …

Muir Center Newsletters (1981-2015)
John Muir Newsletter winter, 1992 university of the pacific volume 2, number 1 "ON JOHN MUIR: LETTERS FROM ALASKA" by Robert Engberg Bruce Merrell and I have reviewed the articles which John Muir wrote for the San Francisco Daily Evening Bulletin during the years 1879 and 1880. They suggest that it was during his visits to still-wild Alaska that Muir first learned that he could shape public opinion. Only three years before his Alaska travels he had attempted to influence the California legislature to stop clear-cut logging in the higher Sierra Nevada ranges. The politicians ignored him, and Muir's political …

The Pros & Cons Of Retaining Stubble, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia
The Pros & Cons Of Retaining Stubble, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Few farmers in Western Australia today would question the desirability of retaining crop stubble. The problem usually is how to manage stubble so that it does not interfere with other parts of the farming system
Stubble Handling Begins At Harvest, Ed Blanchard
Stubble Handling Begins At Harvest, Ed Blanchard
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Long stubble left in the paddock after harvest causes major difficulties at seeding time. To demonstrate the benefits of having short stubble at seeding, the Trayning Land Conservation District Committee created four stubble treatments at harvest in 1988 and sowed into these stubble treatments in 1989.

Resource management technical reports
The landforms and associated soils in the Kellerberrin area (Figure 1) were mapped using a combination of air photo interpretation (1:50,000 black and white, 1984 photography) and ground traverses along roads and tracks. Mapping units used are similar to those described by Bettenay and Hingston (1961; 1964) and Hingston and Bettenay (1961) for the Merredin district. The present survey may be seen as a western extension of the Merredin survey; it adjoins the work of Lantzke (in prep) on the west

Ontario's Blue Box As An Agent Of Change, Robert Nathaniel Burgess
Ontario's Blue Box As An Agent Of Change, Robert Nathaniel Burgess
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Ontario's blue box has elicited strong arguments from observers on both sides of a debate regarding the recycling programme‘s promotion of social change in the province. Both supporters and critics agree on our eventual need to change from a consumer to a conserver society through the 3Rs of waste management (reduce. reuse. recycle). but they disagree on whether the blue box programme ultimately encourages this change. Disagreement also exists regarding the means to achieving change. With supporters of the blue box approach favouring working within the system whereas critics tend to favour a more radical approach. Practical criticisms concern the …
