Methods For The Analysis Of Developmental Respiration Patterns., Justin Tyler Peyton

This thesis looks at the problem of developmental respiration in Sarcophaga crassipalpis Macquart from the biological and instrumental points of view and adapts mathematical and statistical tools in order to analyze the data gathered. The biological motivation and current state of research is given as well as instrumental considerations and problems in the measurement of carbon dioxide production. A wide set of mathematical and statistical tools are used to analyze the time series produced in the laboratory. The objective is to assemble a methodology for the production and analysis of data that can be used in further developmental respiration research.

Assessing the relationship between two sets of multivariate vectors is an important problem in statistics. Canonical correlation coefficients are used to study these relationships. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) is a general multivariate method that is mainly used to study relationships when both sets of variables are quantitative. When the variables are qualitative (categorical), a technique called correspondence analysis (CA) is used. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCPA) is used to deal with the case when one set of variables is categorical and the other set is quantitative. The purpose of this research was to identify how enduring personality characteristics predict a person's location in a network, locations which in turn affect outcomes such as performance. Specifically, this thesis examines how self-monitoring and locus of control influence an individual's location in a friendship social network over time. Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) was used to analyze 28 groups of students and instructors at a military training course over six and one half weeks. Self-monitoring predicted betweenness centrality in five of six time periods while locus of control predicted betweenness centrality in three of six time periods. The moderation of …

Correlated multivariate Poisson and binary variables occur naturally in medical, biological and epidemiological longitudinal studies. Modeling and simulating such variables is difficult because the correlations are restricted by the marginal means via Fréchet bounds in a complicated way. In this dissertation we will first discuss partially specified models and methods for estimating the regression and correlation parameters. We derive the asymptotic distributions of these parameter estimates. In this thesis, we study the application of quasi-least squares, a relatively new method, to estimate the parameters in replicated time series models with general ARMA( p, q) correlation structure. This study discusses rank-based robust methods for estimation of parameters and hypotheses testing in the generalized linear models (GLM) and generalized estimating equations (GEE) setting. The robust estimates are obtained by minimizing a Wilcoxon drop in dispersion function for linear or nonlinear regression models. In addition, diagnostic tools for outliers and influential observations are being developed. These models are generalizations of linear and nonlinear models. They allow for both nonlinear mean functions and heteroscedasticity of their random errors. This makes them quite useful in practice. A few studies have identified etiologic factors in pulpal disease, but little is known about the odds ratios of factors associated with pulpal disease. Odds ratios are well established measures of the effects of exposure to a particular outcome, and are comparisons of exposure to non-exposure in cases versus controls. The purpose of this study was to compare exposure of individual teeth to hypothesized risk factors in endodontic cases and in controls. The time series were analyzed for data points that were outliers. Cost containment has always been a major concern to managers. Therefore, any system which decreases costs by reducing labor time is given serious evaluation.

A five week comparison was made between financial record keeping by the manual method and by the computerized method. A continuous time study was utilized to make this comparison.

Over the five weeks, an average overall time savings of 245 minutes for the computerized versus the manual method was observed. The net savings to the institution was 223 minutes per week which translates to approximately $140.00 per month over a 5 year period.
