The Potential Role Of Local Ethical Committees In The Moderation Of Experiments On Animals In Britain, D. P. Britt Jan 1983

The Potential Role Of Local Ethical Committees In The Moderation Of Experiments On Animals In Britain, D. P. Britt

Experimentation Collection

Scientists working with laboratory animals in Britain are made aware forcibly that a serious ethical dilemma surrounds the use of animals in experiments. Certain vociferous sections of the community press the issue on the attention of the general public and media sources tend to propagate views expressed by the most extreme parties, while neglecting coverage of mature, rational opinion. It is, perhaps no bad thing for the scientific community to be frequently reminded to take a responsible attitude to the use of animals but recent overt, even illegal, activity on the part of extremist animal protectionist groups has encouraged a …

Mammals Of The Northern Great Plains, J. Knox Jones Jr., David M. Armstrong, Robert F. Hoffmann, Clyde Jones Jan 1983

Mammals Of The Northern Great Plains, J. Knox Jones Jr., David M. Armstrong, Robert F. Hoffmann, Clyde Jones

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

For the purposes of this book, the Northern Great Plains are defined as the states of Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. As a physiographic concept, the northern part of the great interior grasslands of North America is, of course, much broader in geographic extent than the Dakotas and Nebraska, but the three states lie in the heart of the region, and thus the title for this work seems appropriate. Our expectations in writing Mammals of the Northern Great Plains were to provide a comprehensive, yet semitechnical, treatmeat of free-living mammals that would prove useful to specialist and nonspecialist alike. …

Agricultural Water Quality Criteria : Irrigation Aspects., P R. George Jan 1983

Agricultural Water Quality Criteria : Irrigation Aspects., P R. George

Resource management technical reports

Water quality criteria for irrigation are imprecise. The final result of quality evaluation depends on plant, soil and climatic variables all of which can be inter-dependent. A range of management strategies of varying complexity are available to mitigate the effects of poor quality water. The heavy winter rainfall in the south-west of Western Australia affects the applicability of published salinity criteria most of which have been developed in arid and semi-arid environments with little effective rainfall.

Pasture Research Programme For The Medium Rainfall Zone Of Wa, P. Dixon

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Pasture Research Programme for the Medium Rainfall Zone of W.A. - Species Selection and Management Related in Particular to the Ryegrass Toxicity Problem Since the early 1970's much of the ryegrass based pastures in the Pallinup region have been affected by Annual Ryegrass Toxicity (ARGT). Control of ryegrass by herbicides invariably leads to a reduction in the stock carrying capacity of the pasture since currently available legume species fail to grow or persist. This tendency is particularly evident on the hard setting loam soils of neutral to alkaline reaction. The aim of this project is to find alternative pasture species …

Immediate Effects Of A Storm On Coastal Infauna, Fred C. Dobbs, Joseph M. Vozarik Jan 1983

Immediate Effects Of A Storm On Coastal Infauna, Fred C. Dobbs, Joseph M. Vozarik

OES Faculty Publications

Effects of storms on benthic infaunal communities have thus far been inferred rather than documented; especially lacking are studies examining immediate effects. To this end, the water column and 2 subtidal benthic sites were sampled before and after Storm David in September 1979. There were large post-storm increases in the numbers of infaunal species and individuals in the water column, presumably due to turbulent benthic boundary conditions. At the benthic stations, there were no pre vs. post-storm differences in the density of infauna; however, the number of species decreased at 1 station. There were storm-associated changes in the rank order …

This trial had a number of different species grown in 1982 and half of the trial was ripped in 1983 and the whole site sown to wheat with different rates of nitrogen applied to the subplots. Part of the information on the trial is contained in Bill Bowden's 1983 summary. 2. Species and management trials, namely 82LG5, 82Nl7, 82N041 and 82N03. 3. These trials had a number of different species grown in 1982 to which a number of management factors were applied …

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1982 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, James Whitcomb Jan 1983

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1982 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, James Whitcomb

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made from oyster shells strung on wire and suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells are counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur.

Environmental Correlates Of Hermatypic Coral (Montastrea Annularis) Growth On The East Flower Gardens Bank, Northwest Gulf Of Mexico, Richard E. Dodge, Judith C. Lang Jan 1983

Environmental Correlates Of Hermatypic Coral (Montastrea Annularis) Growth On The East Flower Gardens Bank, Northwest Gulf Of Mexico, Richard E. Dodge, Judith C. Lang

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Time series of annual linear growth increments from 12 Montastrea annularis (E. and S.) collected at the East Flower Gardens Bank reef in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico have a common pattern. This is best expressed in an index master chronology (average by year of the annual percentage deviations from the mean of each coral.)

Comparisons with time series of environmental data indicate that coral extension rates vary positively with seasonal (February through May - 4 months) surface water temperature and negatively with annual discharge of the Atchafalaya River. We propose that secular variations of water temperature and other parameters …

Curidia Debrogania, A New Genus And Species Of Amphipod (Crustacea: Ochlesidae) From The Barrier Reefs Of Belize, Central America, James Darwin Thomas

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The family Ochlesidae is amended to include the new genus Curidia, which differs from all other members by possessing maxiIIipedal palps. Curidia debrogania is described and compared to other genera and species within the family Ochlesidae.

Curidia debrogania is plesiomorphic by possession of maxillipedal palps, suggesting this member of the small, cryptic family might have originated in the tropical Western Atlantic. Distribution records and ecological notes are included.

Monitoring Defecation Activity Of Infaunal Deposit Feeders, Fred C. Dobbs Jan 1983

Monitoring Defecation Activity Of Infaunal Deposit Feeders, Fred C. Dobbs

OES Faculty Publications

An inexpensive, reliable thermistor device capable of monitoring infaunal foraging activity was built and used in the laboratory to examine effects of temperature on sediment reworking by the maldanld polychaete Clymenella torquata. The worm defecated at least once per hour 55.0 % (12.0 "C) to 88.2 % (5.5 "C) of the time. Defecation rate was linearly and positively related to temperature. Estimated volume of sediment ejected per defecation (0.015 ml) did not change with temperature. Results are compared with previous reworking studies of C. torquata.
