Regional Sea Level, Southern Oscillation And Beach Change, New South Wales, Australia, Edward A. Bryant Sep 1983

Regional Sea Level, Southern Oscillation And Beach Change, New South Wales, Australia, Edward A. Bryant

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Coastal erosion is a problem of increasing concern that affects 60% of the world's sandy coastline. This erosion has been attributed to increased storminess, tectonic subsidence, eustatic sea-level rise, decreased shoreward sediment movement from the shelf, permanent longshore leakage of sediment from beach compartments, shifts in global pressure belts resulting in changes in the directional component of wave climates, and human interference. No one explanation has worldwide applicability because all factors vary in importance regionally. Evaluation of factors is complicated by a lack of accurate, continuous, long-term erosional data. Historical map evidence spanning 100-1,000 yr has been used in a …

York River Slack Water Data Report : Temperature, Salinity, Dissolved Oxygen, 1971 - 1980, T. J. Brooks

Reports

The slack water survey program, provides an extended series of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and nutrient measurements along the York River. These have been used to:

1) calibrate, verify, and update mathematical models; 2) provide a baseline against which effects of unusual events have been measured; and could be used to: 3) establish annual and longer period "climatological" trends in response to changing natural phenomena and man-made modifications to the estuary; 4) provide a basis against which fluctuations in biota could be compared.

This report contains station locations, survey schedules, field procedures, sample handling procedures, and data reduction and storage …

Postmarsupial Development And Growth Of Pagurapseudes Largoensis Mcsweeny (Crustacea, Tanaidacea), Charles G. Messing

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Postmarsupial development of the gastropod shell-inhabiting tanaidacean Pagurapseudes largoensis McSweeny is described and compared with that of Heterotanais oerstedii (Krøyer) and Neotanais micromopher Gardiner. This is the first such study of an apseudomorphan based on experimentally reared animals. P. largoensis is gonochoristic; two manca instars are typical of all tanaidaceans so far investigated. In females, the mancas are followed by two or possibly three juvenile instars (=neutra), one or two preparatory instars characterized by rudimentary oostegites, and a copulatory stage with complete marsupium. Laboratory maintained animals pass through up to three copulatory stages, each separated by a preparatory stage of …

Atlas Of Wetlands In The Principal Coal Surface Mining Region Of Western Kentucky, William J. Mitsch, Jan R. Taylor, Kimberly B. Benson, Paul L. Hill Jr.

KWRRI Research Reports

This atlas contains maps of wetlands and surface mining activity in the Western Kentucky Coal Field, and focuses on a 3960 km2 (1530 mi2) region where approximately 90 percent of surface mining in the Coal field occures. Some present and potential competition exists between surface coal mining and wetland protection. A wetland classification, based on the recent FWS classification, includes six types of palustrine systems and one each of riverine and laucstrine systems. Wetlands and surface mines are located on twenty-seven 7.5 minute USGS quadrangles that define the study region. A total of 460 km2 (177 …

Effects Of Surface Application Of Dairy Manure On The Infiltration Rate And Quality Of Surface Runoff, Joseph L. Taraba, I. J. Ross, John D. Bottom, Bill J. Barfield

KWRRI Research Reports

Dairy manure was surface spread on 12 ft x 12 ft plots on an established fescue pasture in the summer and fall of 1981 and 1982. The soil was a Maury silt loam. A simulated rainfall was applied to plots to test the effects of nitrogen loading rate (75, 150, and 300 #N/acre) time delay between manure application and the simulated rainfall events (0, 3, 6, 24, 48, 96 hours and a 120 hour test repeated on 0 hr plot with 300 #N/acre), and type manure (semi-solid - 1981 and liquid - 1982) on the concentrations of pollutants in the …

The Induction Of Tolerance To Heavy Metals In Natural And Laboratory Populations Of Fish, Wesley J. Birge, William H. Benson, Jeffrey A. Black

KWRRI Research Reports

Aquatic toxicity studies were performed on two natural populations of fathead minnows. One group of organisms was taken from a metal-contaminated flyash pond associated with a coal-fired power plant and the other group was collected from relatively uncontaminated hatchery ponds. Acute tests indicated that flyash pond fish were significantly more tolerant to cadmium and copper than were hatchery fish. At an exposure concentration of 6.0 mg Cd/L in moderately hard water, the median period of survival for flyash pond fish was 50.0 hr compared to 6.8 hr for hatchery fish. Both groups of organisms were about equally sensitive to zinc. …

Precise And Accurate Determination By Infrared Photometry Of Co2 Dynamics In Marine Ecosystems, Kenneth M. Johnson, Curtis M. Burney, John Mcn. Sieburth

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Preliminary studies with an ampule analyzing unit and infrared (IR) detector showed that procedures for standardization and determination of total carbon dioxide (ΣCO2), while often precise, lacked the accuracy required to estimate the net productivity and respiration of aquatic ecosystems during studies in which sampling over diel cycles was used. Scaling down sample and standard volumes to the µl range and the use of a commercial sodium carbonate standard without dilution before and after replicate sample injections gave accurate results as shown by comparison with indirect (pH-alkalinity) ΣCO2, determinations with a standard error of ±3 µmoles …

Annual Medics For The Kalgoorlie Region And Adjacent Eastern Rangeland Zones, G Gintzburger

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Species selection and establishment methods Extensive overgrazing and burning of the dominant winter rainfall Goldfields pastoral zones have left large areas degraded with a poor annual vegetation cover of nearly no grazing value. Thus, more grazing pressure is exerted on shrubs and small trees accelerating the desertification process. Shrubs and trees are the main stabilising agent left in a rangeland plant community when alI annuals have been grazed out. In order to upgrade or regenerate some of these areas, conventional methods of grazing prohibition or deferred grazing can be used but often, improvement obtained are slow. It is hypothesized that …

Limiting Swine Stress With Evaporative Cooling In The Southeast, Robert L. Fehr, K. T. Priddy, Samuel G. Mcneill, Douglas G. Overhults

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Three-hourly weather data for 7 locations in the Southeast and Central United States were used to evaluate the feasibility of evaporative cooling for reducing swine stress. Stress was defined as a relationship between dry and wet bulb temperatures which exceeded a stress index of 85. This analysis indicates that properly installed evaporative coolers could reduce the number of hours that stress would occur in swine facilities from 89.6 to 96.4% depending on location.
