Industrial Wastes, Charles E. Renn
Industrial Wastes, Charles E. Renn
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Staff Publications
This paper presents a summary of experiences with a variety of cyanogenic wastes. The work has attempted to evaluate the interaction of waste bearing waters and the environment in terms of waste disposal design requirements. In this, the approach is somewhat more critical than that commonly taken by fisheries biologists, conservationists, and others who have been concerned with the "preventive" aspects of waste disposal.
The first phases of the work were designed to discover the tolerable limits of certain waste components to fresh water fish. This was undertaken in 1950; in the interval the composition of the wastes has been …

Succession In A Dune Community At Mentor Headlands, Ohio, Harold G. Marshall
Succession In A Dune Community At Mentor Headlands, Ohio, Harold G. Marshall
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Continual sand deposition on the Lake Erie shore, adjacent to the mouth of the Grand River, has led to the formation of a developing sand dune community and through the years a successional pattern of plant growth. An analysis was made of the general plant composition of the area by means of four transects directed from the bare beach inland. Definite zonation of specific plant species was present throughout the community in parallel formation. Named for the dominant plant types they contained, the major stages were: dune grass, poplar, aspen, and oak.

Birds Of Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, Ian Mctaggart Cowan
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
Jasper Park, with an area of approximately 4,200 square miles, is the largest accessible primeval wildlife sanctuary on this continent and as such its bird life is of the greatest interest. The meagre available records of earlier conditions indicate that noteworthy changes in the park's avifauna have taken place in the last 50 years. There can be little doubt that other changes will take place during the years to come. For this reason, then, if for no other, it seems desirable that as complete a record as possible of the current situation be made, for only against it can the …

Why Doesn't Such-And-Such A Game Bird Do Well In Nebraska?, Levi Mohler
Why Doesn't Such-And-Such A Game Bird Do Well In Nebraska?, Levi Mohler
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
Why doesn't such-and-such game bird do well in Nebraska? This is a question which is often asked field workers for the game department. The answer to such an inquiry varies with the bird in question, but in general the following applies: Since climate, topography, and natural foods vary so much from place to place, and since most individual species are not highly adaptable, nature has through the centuries evolved many species, or kinds, of birds, each species adapted to meet certain conditions. Some of these have extensive ranges; others are limited in their distribution. The conditions suited to one species …

Spring Prairie Grouse Census - 1955, Reuel Janson
Spring Prairie Grouse Census - 1955, Reuel Janson
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
The 1955 spring prairie grouse census was conducted during the period March 30 to May 4. Census data were obtained by means of a survey of dancing and booming grounds on 18 automobile transects.
An average population density of 4.77 sharptailed grouse, and 0.71 prairie chickens per square mile was found. Comparable data for 1954 and 1955 indicate a 10 percent decline in the combined prairie and grouse population. The prairie chicken population declined considerably more than the sharptail population.
The extreme northern portion of the grouse range, Corson and Perkins Counties, experienced population gains of approximately 50 percent which …

This report represents a compilation, analysis and summarization of data collected on the South Platte Management Area and deals primarily with game bird data collected by personnel of Project W-37-R. History, general description, and methods of operation are discussed, and recommendations for future operations given.
Briefly, the South Platte Management Area is located in Logan and Sedgwick counties, comprising over 11, 400 acres of state-owned land in four separate segments. The largest segment (more than 12,000 acres of deeded and leased land) lies along the South Platte River from Proctor to Red Lion. This, and a second area of 240 …
Measurement Of Irrigation Water, Eldon M. Stock
Measurement Of Irrigation Water, Eldon M. Stock
Reports
Foreword: Although irrigation has been practiced in Utah for more than one hundred years, irrigation water still is being distributed to farmers with little or not thought about its measurement. A farmer would not think of buying or selling other farm commodities, such as hay, grain, beef cattle, or dairy products, without weighing or accurately measuring them, but at the same time he is often content to accept and pay for the irrigation water received with little or no knowledge as to the actual amount received, or whether or not he is receiving the amount he is entitled to. Measurement …

In the year 1946, two townships of experimental work in aerial censusing. technique for obtaining complete counts during the winter months.
The aerial survey proved to be very satisfactory when snow conditions are right. At I available cover must be well filled with snow, with very few bare spots in fields or other parts of the area. The birds tend to congregate on such bare places where it is very difficult to see them from the plane.
In 1951 a total of 40 townships were laid out as census plots in different parts of the state. In 1952 six new …
