The paper characterises the method of preparing the HCC and Rubba-type materials used to manufacture small carbon and graphite products, and the composition of waste gases escaping from the mixers for these materials. For the process of mixing the two materials under examination, two measurement series were completed, mainly covering the period from when the binder was added to the properly pre-heated dry mass until the mixer discharged. The results shown apply only to those substances which occur just in the gaseous phase, that is CO, CO2, O2, H2, aliphatic hydrocarbons (C1-C6) and BTX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene). Due …

Understanding interactivity in/between bigraphs and diamonds Grammatologically, the Western notational system is not offering space in itself to place sameness and otherness necessary to realize interaction/ality. Alphabetism is not prepared to challenge the dynamics of interaction directly. The Chinese writing system in its scriptural structuration, is able to place complex differences into itself, necessary for the development and design of formal systems and programming languages of interaction. The challenge of interactionality to Western thinking, modeling and design interactivity has to be confronted with the decline of the scientific power of alpha-numeric notational systems as media of living in a complex …

Visualization Of Groundwater Flow Within Touching-Vug And Matrix Porosity In An Eogenetic Karst Aquifer, Lee J. Florea, Kevin J. Cunningham, Stephen Altobelli Jan 2008

Visualization Of Groundwater Flow Within Touching-Vug And Matrix Porosity In An Eogenetic Karst Aquifer, Lee J. Florea, Kevin J. Cunningham, Stephen Altobelli

Lee J Florea, PhD, P.G.

In this study, we use an innovative, non-invasive technology, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI), to visualize the direction and magnitude of groundwater flow in field samples of late Pleistocene limestone of the Biscayne aquifer. Specific goals of the first set of NMRI experiments are to map the advective velocity of water flowing at two rates of specific discharge (0.00025 and 0.00013 m/s) through a 10-cm-diameter cylindrical, epoxy-resin model. The model interior accurately reproduces a well-connected maze of ichnologically influenced, centimeter-scale, touching-vug macroporosity common within preferred flow zones in parts of the Biscayne aquifer. A second set of NMRI experiments investigates …

Bench-Scale Disinfection Of Bacteria And Viruses With Pulsed Arc Electrohydraulic Discharge, L H. Lee, A J. Arnold, C A. Santillan, M B. Emelko, Sarah E. Dickson, J. -S Chang

Sarah E Dickson

Pulsed arc electrohydraulic discharge (PAED) offers concurrent treatment of chemical and microbial target compounds in water by several mechanisms. Here, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis spore, and MS2 bacteriophage inactivation by PAED were investigated using two bench-scale reactors (0.7 and 3 L). A plasma channel was created between a pair of iron electrodes set 0.5 mm apart in these reactors. Pulsed applied voltage was supplied at approximately 0.3 kJ/pulse (~100 ìsec). In the 0.7-L reactor, median E. coli, B. subtilis, and MS2 reductions of 2.4-, 4.6-, and 3.7-log, respectively, were observed after approximately 80 seconds of treatment in water with a …

Expansion Of The Discontinuous Gas Phase And Its Effect On Mass Flux From A Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (Napl) Pool, Kevin G. Mumford, James E. Smith, Sarah E. Dickson Jan 2008

Expansion Of The Discontinuous Gas Phase And Its Effect On Mass Flux From A Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (Napl) Pool, Kevin G. Mumford, James E. Smith, Sarah E. Dickson

Sarah E Dickson

The partitioning of non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) compounds to a discontinuous gas phase results in the repeated spontaneous expansion, snap-off, and vertical mobilization of the gas phase. This mechanism has the potential to significantly affect the mass transfer processes that control the dissolution of NAPL pools by increasing the vertical transport of NAPL mass and increasing the total mass transfer rate from the surface of the pool. The extent to which this mechanism affects mass transfer from a NAPL pool depends on the rate of expansion and the mass of NAPL compound in the gas phase. This study used well-controlled …

On The Appropriate “Equivalent Aperture” For The Description Of Solute Transport In Single Fractures: Laboratory-Scale Experiments, Qinghuai Zheng, Sarah E. Dickson, Yiping Guo Jan 2008

On The Appropriate “Equivalent Aperture” For The Description Of Solute Transport In Single Fractures: Laboratory-Scale Experiments, Qinghuai Zheng, Sarah E. Dickson, Yiping Guo

Sarah E Dickson

Three distinct definitions of ‘‘equivalent aperture’’ have been used in the literature to describe variable-aperture fractures; however, significant inconsistencies exist in the literature as to which ‘‘equivalent aperture’’ is appropriate for simulating solute transport. In this work, a systematic series of hydraulic and tracer tests was conducted on three laboratory-scale fracture replicas, and the cubic law, mass balance, and frictional loss apertures were calculated. The analytical solution of the one-dimensional advectiondispersion equation was fit to the experimental breakthrough curves. Additionally, one of the experimental aperture fields was measured directly using a light transmission technique. The results clearly demonstrate that the …

Slow Gas Expansion In Saturated Natural Porous Media By Gas Injection And Partitioning With Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids, Kevin G. Mumford, Sarah E. Dickson, James E. Smith Jan 2008

Slow Gas Expansion In Saturated Natural Porous Media By Gas Injection And Partitioning With Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids, Kevin G. Mumford, Sarah E. Dickson, James E. Smith

Sarah E Dickson

The partitioning of volatile non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) compounds to a discontinuous gas phase can result in the expansion of that gas phase, and the resulting gas flow can significantly affect the mass transfer from NAPL source zones. This recently reported gas flow generated by the spontaneous expansion of a discontinuous gas phase has not been extensively characterized in the literature. This study measured the expansion rate of a single gas cluster in a 1.1 mm sand above a pool of trans-1,2-dichloroethene (tDCE) in small-scale flow cell experiments. To characterize the gas flow, gas injection experiments in three sizes of …

Application Of Genomics To Regulatory Ecological Risk Assessments For Pesticides, Steven P. Bradbury, Sigmund J. Degitz, Robert A. Hoke, Richard Brennan, Lee Ferguson, Rebecca Klaper, Laszlo Orban, David Spurgeon, Susan Tilton

Steven P. Bradbury

Substantial advances in human health and ecological risk assessment have been achieved by the risk assessment community; however, challenges remain, such as providing credible scientific information on a timely, efficient basis to support decisions for industrial chemicals and pesticides. Current risk assessment data generation requirements-including animal welfare concerns and the volume, appropriateness, and cost of required data-and the large number of chemicals requiring evaluation are a challenge confronting the chemical industry, national and international regulatory agencies, and associated stakeholders (Bradbury et al. 2004). The lack of hazard data for many chemicals and the need to improve the efficiency and quality …

Toxic Responses Of The Fish Nervous System, Steven P. Bradbury, Richard W. Carlson, Tala R. Henry, Stephanie Padilla, John Cowden

Steven P. Bradbury

Few of the approximately 70,000 chemicals on the Toxic Substances Control Act inventory or the 1000 to 1600 new chemicals introduced each year in the United States have been tested for neurotoxicity to support risk assessments (NRC, 1992), even though it is estimated that 5 to 10% of them are likely to be neurotoxic. Neurotoxicity has been defined as adverse effects of physical, biological, or chemical agents on the structure or function of the nervous system in developing or adult organisms (Philbert et al., 2000). From a human health risk assessment perspective, the potential for neurotoxic effects associated with synthetic …

Reclaiming U.S. Leadership In Global Environmental Governance, Maria Ivanova Jan 2008

Reclaiming U.S. Leadership In Global Environmental Governance, Maria Ivanova

Maria Ivanova

The United States entered the 21st century actively pursuing a “go-it-alone” approach to international relations. This is especially the case in global environmental affairs, where the United States is now widely perceived as a laggard and even an obstacle to collective action. Yet, the United States was the prime proponent and creator of international environmental organizations in the 1970s. In this article, we analyze the U.S. role in global environmental governance from a historical perspective and present a platform for U.S. re-engagement. We contend that the new U.S. Administration should re-examine its strategy towards global environmental concerns and reinstate a …

Teaching Structural Geology Through Integrated Field Observation And Modeling, Phillip Resor

Phillip G Resor

Research in Earth and Environmental Sciences is becoming increasingly quantitative and process-based. This trend is driven by the widespread availability of digital data sets and high-power computing as well as the need to develop predictive models of earth processes to address societal problems. To address these changes in the field I integrate traditional aspects of structural geology including field observation and three-dimensional visualization with quantitative process-based methods in a series of topical course modules. Two examples of this approach are: 1) An integrated investigation into rock fracture that includes performing Nick Nickelsen's plaster of paris dike in Jello experiment (Davis …

Photogrammetric 3d Mapping Of The Permian Reef, Nm And Tx, Usa, Phillip Resor, George Bennum, Eric Flodin, Jeremy Fairbanks

Phillip G Resor

Although the Permian Capitan depositional system is perhaps one of the best-exposed and most thoroughly studied steep-rimmed carbonate systems, the role of synsedimentary deformation in the development of the platform geometry is still poorly understood. We have undertaken an effort to map 3D stratal and structural architecture in two regions of the Guadalupe Mountains, Slaughter and Big Canyons, to better constrain present-day geometry and quantify the distribution and magnitude of syn- and post-depositional deformation. The resulting 3D geologic models serve to inform and constrain mechanical models aimed at understanding the process of synsedimentary deformation, including formation of early fracture systems …

Integrating Geomechanical Modeling And Three-Dimensional Mapping To Constrain Deformation Associated With Growth Of The Permian Capitan Reef Complex, Phillip Resor, Eric Flodin Dec 2007

Integrating Geomechanical Modeling And Three-Dimensional Mapping To Constrain Deformation Associated With Growth Of The Permian Capitan Reef Complex, Phillip Resor, Eric Flodin

Phillip G Resor

The stratal geometry of the Permian Capitan Reef Complex has been influenced by syn-sedimentary deformation including tilting, folding, Previous HitfracturingTop, and faulting of strata. The importance of these effects has been a topic of debate for decades and impacts our understanding of the initial sedimentary geometry as well as the distribution of early-formed fracture systems. We use geomechanical finite element modeling to predict the magnitude and distribution of syn-sedimentary deformation associated with a prograding shelf margin. The model is linear elastic with heterogeneous layering comprised of four principal facies (platform, reef, upper slope, and lower slope/basin). In order to simulate …

Ocena Wpływu Planowanego Zakładu Termicznego Przekształcania Odpadów Komunalnych Na Jakość Powietrza W Krakowie, Robert Oleniacz, Maria Pilch

Robert Oleniacz

Construction of the Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) plant is considered optimal in the Programme of Management of Solid Waste in Krakow as well as in proposed scenarios of Municipal Waste Management. Evaluation of impact of the incineration plant with a capacity of 255000 tons per year on air quality in Krakow is presented in this work. The evaluation is based on assumption that air pollutant emissions from the incinerator will be at the highest allowed level resulting from emission limit values for waste incineration plants with operation time each of two planned lines 7500 hours per year. Calculation results …

Deformation Associated With A Continental Normal Fault System, Western Grand Canyon, Arizona, Phillip G. Resor Dec 2007

Deformation Associated With A Continental Normal Fault System, Western Grand Canyon, Arizona, Phillip G. Resor

Phillip G Resor

Reverse-drag folds are often used to infer subsurface fault geometry in extended terrains, yet details of how these folds form in association with slip on normal fault systems are poorly understood. Detailed structural mapping and global positioning system (GPS) surveying of the Frog Fault and Lone Mountain Monocline in the western Grand Canyon demonstrate a systematic relationship between elements of the normal fault system and fold geometry. The Lone Mountain Monocline, which parallels the Frog Fault, is made up of two half-monoclinal flexures: a hanging-wall fold in which dips gradually increase toward the fault over ~1.5 km reaching a maximum …
