Variability In Winter Mass Balance Of Northern Hemisphere Glaciers And Relations With Atmospheric Circulation, Gregory J. Mccabe, Andrew G. Fountain, Mark Dyurgerov
Variability In Winter Mass Balance Of Northern Hemisphere Glaciers And Relations With Atmospheric Circulation, Gregory J. Mccabe, Andrew G. Fountain, Mark Dyurgerov
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
An analysis of variability in the winter mass balance (WMB) of 22 glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere indicates two primary modes of variability that explain 46% of the variability among all glaciers. The first mode of variability characterizes WMB variability in Northern and Central Europe and the second mode primarily represents WMB variability in northwestern North America, but also is related to variability in WMB of one glacier in Europe and one in Central Asia. These two modes of WMB variability are explained by variations in mesoscale atmospheric circulation which are driving forces of variations in surface temperature and precipitation. …

Assessment Of Oak Woodland Resources In Blm’S Eugene District, David G. Chiller, David G. Vesely, William I. Dean
Assessment Of Oak Woodland Resources In Blm’S Eugene District, David G. Chiller, David G. Vesely, William I. Dean
United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
Because of the significant loss of oak (Quercus spp.) habitat and the subsequent increased value placed on oak woodlands for wildlife habitat, the preservation and restoration of native oak woodlands has become a priority for land managers and conservationists in the Western United States. In 1998, reconnaissance surveys were conducted on 13 oak woodland sites managed by the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM’s) Eugene District in Lane County, Oregon. The sites were classified as either meadow-type communities or woodland-type communities; oak patches within the sites were delineated; and the topographic features, vegetation structure, and composition of the sites were …
Annual Update Of Tampa Bay Chlorophyll-A Concentrations 2000, J. O.R. Johansson
Annual Update Of Tampa Bay Chlorophyll-A Concentrations 2000, J. O.R. Johansson
Reports
The amount of phytoplankton present in Tampa Bay waters can be estimated from measurements of the green plant pigment chlorophyll-a. Phytoplankton is one of several major forms of plants that exist in Tampa Bay and most other estuaries. Other major plant types are submerged seagrass, macro-algae and benthic micro-algae. The different plants can be viewed as being in competition with each other for required resources, such as light and nutrients. Studies conducted in urbanized estuaries have shown that excessive loading of nitrogen generally is accompanied by an increase of phytoplankton and macro-algae, including epiphytic and drift macro-algae, and by a …
Conservation Des Habitats De Roussettes De Livingstone – Les Massifs Forestiers D’Anjouan Et Moheli, Comores: Utilisation D’Indicateurs Sociaux Et Ecologiques, Elise F. Granek
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
An Analysis Of Pteropus Livingstonii Roost Habitat: Indicators For Forest Conservation On Anjouan And Moheli, Elise F. Granek
An Analysis Of Pteropus Livingstonii Roost Habitat: Indicators For Forest Conservation On Anjouan And Moheli, Elise F. Granek
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Livingstone's fruit bat (Pteropus livingstonii) is an endangered and endemic species found only on the islands of Anjouan and Mohéli, Comoros. A study was conducted into the habitats selected by P. livingstonii, as part of a project to assess areas for nature reserves which will be able to protect and conserve forest resources in the islands; the bat is postulated to be a useful indicator of undisturbed forest. Known roost sites (n=9) before the survey were between 500 and 1100 m altitude, on steeply sloping land, with some indigenous forest cover present. Thirteen new potential roost sites were identified, of …

Geochemical Evidence For An Eolian Sand Dam Across The North And South Platte Rivers In Nebraska, Daniel R. Muhs, James B. Swinehart, David B. Loope, Josh Been, Shannon A. Mahan, Charles A. Bush
Geochemical Evidence For An Eolian Sand Dam Across The North And South Platte Rivers In Nebraska, Daniel R. Muhs, James B. Swinehart, David B. Loope, Josh Been, Shannon A. Mahan, Charles A. Bush
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Geochemical and geomorphic data from dune fields in southwestern Nebraska provide new evidence that the Nebraska Sand Hills once migrated across the North and South Platte rivers and dammed the largest tributary system to the Missouri River. The Lincoln County and Imperial dune fields, which lie downwind of the South Platte River, have compositions intermediate between the Nebraska Sand Hills (quartz-rich) and northeastern Colorado dunes (K-feldspar-rich). The most likely explanation for the intermediate composition is that the Lincoln County and Imperial dunes are derived in part from the Nebraska Sand Hills and in part from the South Platte River. The …
