Fabrication And Superconducting Properties Of Highly Dense Mgb2 Bulk Using A Two-Step Sintering Method, Minoru Maeda, Yue Zhao, Yoshifumi Watanabe, Hiroaki Matsuoka, Y Kubota

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We investigated on microstructure and superconducting properties of high-density MgB2superconductors synthesized by a heat-treatment method combining a short period of sintering at 1100°C with a following annealing at a low temperature. The two-step sintering method was found to achieve a coexistence of a high density and broadened XRD full width at half maximum (FWHM) of MgB2 peak in the samples. The onset of diamagnetism at 5 T was approximately 2 K higher than those of the samples heat-treated by single-step sintering at high or low temperatures. Different second-step annealing temperatures were examined in this work. …

The crystal structure and the electronic and thermal properties of a high-quality polycrystalline TbFeAsO0.85 sample made by a high-pressure technique are investigated. The crystal structure, as determined by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, possesses a tetragonal unit cell (space group: P4/nmm) with lattice parameters of a=b=3.8851 Å and c =8.3630 Å. In order to elucidate the electronic structure and oxidation states of corresponding elements, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra are presented. The XANES spectra confirm that the oxidation states of Fe, As, and Tb in the TbFeAsO0.85 sample are ~Fe2+, …

Room Temperature Multiferroic Properties Of Nd: Bifeo3/Bi2femno6 Bilayered Films, Hongyang Zhao, Hideo Kimura, Zhenxiang Cheng, Xiaolin Wang, Takashi Nishida

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Nd0.1Bi0.9FeO3 /Bi2FeMnO6 bilayered films were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2 / Si substrate by pulsed laser deposition method. BiFeO3 is antiferromagnet while BiMnO3 is ferromagnet, the ordering of –Mn–O–Fe–O–Mn– is expected, which will induce the ferromagnetic interation in the film. The film shows typical ferromagnetic properties with the transition temperature of Tc of 440 K. The room temperature (RT) ferroelectric polarization was also observed, suggesting that the film is a promising RT multiferroism.

Bi1-xLaxFeO3 ceramics with x=0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 have been synthesized by solid state reaction, starting from metal oxides. A series of structure transformations is found to depend upon the doping level. Below 10% La doping, Bi1-xLaxFeO3 maintains the rhombohedral structure of BiFeO3. However, for Bi0.8La0.2FeO3 and Bi0.7La0.3FeO3, the structures change to the orthorhombic and tetragonal, respectively. La doping significantly reduces electric leakage and leads to successful observation of electrical polarization hysteresis loops. Doping with La also …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We report the significant improvement of the ferroelectric properties of BiFeO3thin film through control of electrical leakage by Nb doping. A very large remanent electrical polarization value of 80 µC/cm2 was observed in Bi0.8La0.2Nb0.01Fe0.99O3 thin film on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate. The doping effect of Nb in reducing the movable charge density due to oxygen vacancies in BiFeO3 was confirmed by the dielectric measurements. A very small loss was observed in the Nb and La codoped BiFeO3 thin film. As well as the improvement in the …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

In this work, we report on the studies of dielectric, magnetic, and magnetotransport properties of Sr doped RE2-xSrxCoO4 (RE=Pr or Eu, x=0.25-1.5). These compounds were systematically studied in terms of structure, magnetic, magnetotransport, and dielectric constant measurements. Rietveld refinement indicated that these compounds crystallized in K2NiF4-type structure with space group I4/mmm. Lattice parameters increase with Sr doping level. The system changes from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic with increasing Sr doping level and finally becomes ferromagnetic with TC of 230 K for Pr0.75Sr1.25CoO4 and …

Correlation Between Doping Induced Disorder And Superconducting Properties In Carbohydrate Doped Mgb2, Jung Ho Kim, S X. Dou, Sangjun Oh, M Jercinovic, E Babic, T Nakane, Hiroaki Kumakura

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A comprehensive study of the effects of carbohydrate doping on the superconductivity of MgB2 has been conducted. In accordance with the dual reaction model, more carbon substitution is achieved at lower sintering temperature. As the sintering temperature is lowered, lattice disorder is increased. Disorder is an important factor determining the transition temperature for the samples studied in this work, as evidenced from the correlations among the lattice strain, the resistivity, and the transition temperature. It is further shown that the increased critical current density in the high field region can be understood by a recently-proposed percolation model [M. Eisterer …

Ferroelectric Properties Of Bi3.25sm0.75v0.02t2.98o12 Thin Film At Elevated Temperature, Zhenxiang Cheng, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou, Kiyoshi Ozawa, Hideo Kimura

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The ferroelectric behavior in terms of electrical polarization and fatigue and dielectric properties at elevated temperature of the ferroelectric Bi3.25Sm0.75V0.02T2.98O12 thin film fabricated by the pulsed laser deposition method were studied. Its switchable polarization increased at elevated temperature, and the coercive field decreased at the same time due to the strong domain depinning process at higher temperature. This film shows almost a polarization-fatigue-free character at room temperature, but the aggregation and diffusion of the thermally activated long-range oxygen vacancies caused strong domain pinning, and thus a poor fatigue resistance was observed …

Single-Crystal Growth And Anisotropic Magnetic Properties Of Nonstoichiometric Three-Layer Sodium Cobalt Oxides, Dapeng Chen, Xiaolin Wang, C T Lin, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Large single crystals of α-NaxCoO2 (x=0.91, 0.92, and 0.93) have been successfully fabricated by using the traveling solvent floating zone method. Details on the crystal growth are discussed. The crystal structures were characterized using powder x-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement. The magnetic susceptibility measurements show that the magnetic properties depend strongly on x. The compound was found to be antiferromagnetic at TN ≈ 20 K for x=0.91 and x=0.92, and paramagnetic for x=0.93. The in-plane and out-of-plane anisotropies were observed for the x=0.91 crystals. In addition, the derived anisotropic g-factor ratios (gab /gc) …

Growth Of Width-Controlled Nanowires Mno2 From Mesoporous Carbon And Investigation Of Their Properties, Shenmin Zhu, Xiaolin Wang, Wei Huang, Deyue Yan, Honghua Wang, Di Zhang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

One-dimensional α-MnO2 nanowires with a controlled width of 10–20 nm have been developed by means of ultrasonic waves from mesoporous carbon using KMnO4 as the precursor. The formation mechanism has been proposed based on the results. A peak around 100 K was detected in the temperature-dependence of magnetization curve, indicating the ferromagnetic state in nanocomposite mesoporous carbon-MnO2, which is in agreement with the transition temperature found from the magnetization versus applied magnetic field curve. The magnetization versus temperature curve of the obtained MnO2 nanowires showed a magnetic transition at about 50 K, illustrating that a …

Organic polymers, such as poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), and poly(styrene), were intercalated into single-walled carbon nanotube sheets by soaking the sheets in polymer solutions. Even for short soak times, significant polymer intercalation into existing free volume was observed. Tensile tests on intercalated sheets showed that the Young's modulus, strength, and toughness increased by factors of 3, 9, and 28, respectively, indicating that the intercalated polymer enhances load transmission between nanotubes.

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The processing, microstructures and properties of La0.7Sr0.3Mn1−xZnxO3 perovskite manganite, with x=0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 have been investigated. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and other characterisation methods were used to study the relations of microstructure and properties. The X-ray powder diffraction results show a single phase for the 0<x<0.3 region that confirms the zinc incorporation into the Mn site. The SEM images with magnification 1500× indicate that the studied system is a single phase. The transport measurements show decreasing of insulator to metal transition temperature, Tt, with increasing the zinc concentration on the Mn site, while the resistivity increases with …
