The Graduate Center for Cloud Physics Research at UMR Has Developed a Cloud Simulation Facility to Study Phenomena Occurring in Terrestrial Clouds and Fogs. the Facility Consists of a Pair of Precision Cooled-Wall Expansion Chambers Along with Extensive Supporting Equipment. the Smaller of These Chambers, Described in This Article, is Fully Operational, and is Capable of Simulating a Broad Range of In-Cloud Thermodynamic Conditions. It is Currently Being Used to Study Water Drop Growth and Evaporation for Drops Nucleated (Activated) on Well-Characterized Aerosol Particles. Measurements Have Been Made Not Only for Continuous Expansions (Simulated Updraft) But Also for Cyclic Conditions, …
Theoretical Thermodynamic Properties Of Low Temperature Fluids, Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal
Theoretical Thermodynamic Properties Of Low Temperature Fluids, Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal
Masters Theses
The thermodynamic functions for low temperature fluids are computed using parametric integral equations and perturbation theory. Parametric integral equation N is applied to a low temperature Lennard-Jones gas. It is found that there is no significant improvement over the better known parametric integral equation C. The two parameter integral equation T is applied to a low temperature square-well potential and is found to be unsatisfactory at reduced temperatures of T*= 1.4 and 1.6, but quite accurate at T* = 2.2. The equation T results for T* = 2.2 are used as the reference system in perturbation theory computations. Tables of …
Generalized Linear Inversion Using Tau-P Forward Modeling, Stephen Dade Walker
Generalized Linear Inversion Using Tau-P Forward Modeling, Stephen Dade Walker
Graduate Theses
The Generalized Linear Inversion (GLI) method is used in conjunction with a tau-p forward model to successfully perform inversions of test and real-data examples. All data examples used are one-dimensional velocity profiles that represent several different cases. The stability of the technique is demonstrated in all the test-data sets. The use of simple models and wel1-control 1ed test data results in a minimum of iterations of the inversion process. Different levels of perturbation of the model and test-data examples are used to reveal insight into the robust nature of the inversion.

Theoretical Study Of The Environmental Effects On The Hyperfine Fields Of Ni And Fe In Ni0.75fe0.25, H. Ebert, H. Winter, B. Gyorffy, Duane D. Johnson, F. J. Pinski
Duane D. Johnson
The dependence of the hyperfine fields Bhf of Ni and Fe in Ni0.75Fe0.25 on the surrounding atomic configuration has been studied by performing charge selfconsistent 6 shell-cluster Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Coherent Potential Approximation (KKR-CPA) bandstructure calculations. By replacing the CPA- scatterers in the various shells around the central atom by Ni - or Fe-atoms, respectively, it could be shown that the hyperfine fields vary linearly with the number of Fe-atoms within a given shell and that the changes of Bhf due to simultaneous changes of the atomic configurations of different shells are additive. The changes of the hyperfine fields upon ordering of …

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Adaptive Histogram Equalization For Contrast Enhancement, John B. Zimmerman, Stephen M. Pizer, Edward V. Staab, J. Randolph Perry, William Mccartney, Bradley C. Brenton
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Adaptive Histogram Equalization (AHE), a method of contrast enhancement which is sensitive to local spatial information in an image, has been proposed as a solution to the problem of the inability of ordinary display devices to depict the full dynamic intensity range in some medical images. This method is automatic, reproducible, and simultaneously displays most of the information contained in the grey-scale contrast of the image. However, it has not been known whether the use of AHE causes the loss of diagnostic information relative to the commonly-used method intensity windowing. In the current work, AHE and intensity windowing are compared …
Load And Communications Balancing On Multiprocessor Logic Simulation Engines, Ken Wong, Mark A. Franklin
Load And Communications Balancing On Multiprocessor Logic Simulation Engines, Ken Wong, Mark A. Franklin
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
The problem considered in this paper is to find an assignment of logic components to processors which will achieve logic simulation speed-ups approaching the ideal for large processor populations. This problem becomes particularly important when a significant portion of the speed-up expected from logic simulation engines is attributed to load sharing (as opposed to obtaining speed-up by employing specialized hardware to carry out specific tasks associated with the simulation process such as event queue manipulation or function evaluation). Our research considers this problem for a particular multiprocessor simulation architecture for which a performance model has bene developed. The model is …

A Study Of Flow Separation In Transonic Flow Using Inviscid And Viscous Cfd Schemes, James Andrew Rhodes
A Study Of Flow Separation In Transonic Flow Using Inviscid And Viscous Cfd Schemes, James Andrew Rhodes
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A comparison of flow separation in transonic flows is made using various computational schemes which solve the Euler and the Navier-Stokes equations of fluid mechanics. The flows examined are computed using several simple two-dimensional configurations including a backward facing step and a bump in a channel. Comparison of the results obtained using shock fitting and flux vector splitting methods are presented and the results obtained using the Euler codes are compared to results on the same configurations using a code which solves the Navier-Stokes equations.

Transaction Network: A Parallel Computation Model Based On Consume/Produce Paradigm, Takayuki Dan Kimura
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
This report introduces a new parallel computation model that is suitable for pursuit of large scale concurrency. Our goal is to develop a semantically clean paradigm for distributed computation with fine-grained parallelism. Our approach is to demote the notion of process as the key concept in organizing large scale parallel computation. We promote, instead, the notion of transaction, an anonymous atomic action void of internal state, as the basic element of computation. We propose to organize a computation as a network, called a transaction net, of databases connected by transactions. A transaction, when it is fired, consumes data objects from …

Electron Beam Effects In The Analysis Of Compound Semiconductors And Devices, Nancy Burnham, Ll Kazmerski, Ab Swartzlander, Aj Nelson, Se Asher
Nancy A. Burnham
The effects of electron beams on the analysis of CuInSe2surfaces are examined in this paper. Potential changes in the surface chemistry—including oxidation and desorption—under a range of incident probe conditions, are investigated for possible artifactual information generation. Emphasis is placed on the relationships between beam conditions and oxygen chemisorption and physisorption, since oxygen treatments of devices utilizing this semiconductor are critical to performance. Single crystals and polycrystalline thin films are analyzed and compared to establish the beam‐induced phenomena.

All Computer Science and Engineering Research
The Advanced Communication Systems Project is concerned with new communication technologies that can support a wide range of different communication applications in the context of large public networks. Communications networks in common use today have been tailored to specific applications and while they perform their assigned functions well, they are difficult to adapt to new uses. There currently are no general purpose networks, rather there are telephone networks, low-speed data networks and cable television networks. As new communications applications proliferate, it becomes clear that in the long term, a more flexible communications infrastructure will be needed. The Integrated Services Digital …
