An approximate solution of the equation of motion of a nonlinear anelastic reed at or near resonance is presented. The steady state solution reproduces the well-known nonlinear resonances. The solution also predicts the existence of auto modulations, i.e., self-excited modulations of the amplitude and phase at constant power of excitation of the reed. Numerical examples of such auto modulations are presented for an antisymmetric deformation potential. Experimental studies of finite amplitude oscillations of a magnesium reed vibrating at 72 and 431 Hz at room temperature confirm the existence of auto modulations. Subharmonic generation has been observed during the propagation of deep‐water capillary waves. The observations are shown to be in agreement with the theory of degenerate resonant noncollinear three‐wave interaction in a nonlinear, dispersive medium.

Explicit Determination Of The Complex Refractive Index Of An Absorbing Medium From Reflectance Measurements At And Near Normal Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam

Measurement of reflectance at normal incidence R and its fractional change ΔR/R caused by a change of the angle of incidence from 0 to a small angle ϕ (ϕ≲ 20°) permits explicit determination of both the refractive index n and extinction coefficient k of an isotropic absorbing medium. The medium of incidence (ambient) is assumed to have a known refractive index (e.g., =1 for vacuum or air), and the incident light is either p or s linearly polarized.

A design procedure is described to determine the thicknesses of single-layer coatings of a given dielectric on a given metallic substrate so that any input polarization of light is preserved after two reflections at the same angle of incidence from a parallel-mirror beam displacer or an axicon. This is achieved by equalizing the net complex p and s reflection coefficients (also called the radial and azimuthal eigenvalues of an axicon) after two reflections. The net polarization-independent reflectance (insertion loss) of the device is computed and found to exceed the net minimum parallel reflectance of the uncoated device for incidence above …

The project "Research on Atmospheric Volcanic Emissions" is a unique effort by NASA and university scientists to investigate the detailed chemical nature of plumes from volcanic eruptions. The major goals of the project are to: 1) understand the impact major eruptions will have on atmospheric chemistry processes, 2) understand the importance of volcanic emissions in the atmospheric geochemical cycles of selected species, 3) use knowledge of the plume chemical composition to diagnose and predict magmatic processes. The complex reflection coefficients for the parallel (p) and perpendicular (s) polarizations of light that are normally incident upon an isotropic surface are proved to be stationary with respect to small changes of the angle of incidence in the neighborhood of zero. This is true not only for a single interface between isotropic media but also for any one-dimensionally inhomogeneous or multilayer reflecting structure that is stratified in the direction of the surface normal. In February and March of 1978, filter samplers mounted on an aircraft were used to collect the aerosol fraction of the eruption clouds from three active Guatemalan volcanoes (Fuego, Pacaya, and Santiaguito). The samples were collected on Teflon (Fluoropore) filters with a nominal pore diameter of 0.5μm. The mass of air sampled by the filters ranged from 0.15 to 6.6 kg. The particulate material collected consisted of fragments of angular silicate ash and droplets of what is interpreted as dilute H₂SO₄ and HCl. Particles in the size range of 0.1–25 micrometers were sampled by aircraft carrying a quartz crystal microcascade in the Mount St. Helens plume on three dates in August and September 1980. Two of the sampling dates represented ‘typical’ emissions of the volcano between plinian eruptions. One sampling flight was made 1–4 hours before the small plinian eruption of August 7, 1980, when the plume had become discontinuous and visibly darker. Size distributions were determined, and individual particles were studied by using scanning electron microscopy.
