The use of satellite remote sensing for environmental management applications has seen a marked increase over the past decade. Remotely sensed data are obtainable for a variety of parameters, such as mineral exploration, species migration, and for determining sea surface temperatures (SSTs). This study examined whether satellite remote sensing is a viable option for determining SSTs in coastal waters, as traditionally this application has only been applied to open-ocean, offshore waters. SSTs in the nearshore waters of Rottnest Island, Western Australia, were determined using in situ temperature loggers and remotely sensed satellite data. Initially the accuracy of the satellite sea …

An experiment was conducted to determine if a decrease in the content of sulfides related to denitrification could be measured in the laboratory using sediments of the Elk Valley Aquifer in eastern North Dakota. The experiment entailed analyzing sediments for sulfides and solid organic carbon and isolating them in sample containers with a nitrate solution to determine if a measurable decrease in these components could be observed.
Previous denitrification studies in the Elk Valley Aquifer showed an increase in sulfate in conjunction with a decrease in the concentration of nitrate. Sulfate is a by product of autotrophic denitrification where sulfide …

Greater well efficiency and lower production costs may result from a knowledge of water flow through well screens. Current practice generally locates the intake of a pump in the cased section of the well above the screen. This work shows that placing the pump within the screen will increase well efficiency and therefore lower energy cost. This work also shows a correlation of increased well efficiency with respect to larger sand size, larger screen slot size, and lower flow rates.

Remote sensing is the science and art of obtaining information about an object, area or phenomenon through the analysis of data acquired by a device that is not in contact with the object, area, or phenomenon under investigation. Recent mass wasting of sea cliffs along Bellingham Bay in Northwest Washington has exposed late Pleistocene littoral deposits in the Deming sand, which is underlain by Kulshan glaciomarine drift (gmd) and overlain by Bellingham glaciomarine drift (Easterbrook 1963). Marine shells in the Kulshan gmd were dated at 12,210 ± 80 14C-yrs B. P. and marine shells in the Deming sand were dated at 11,760 ± 85 and 11,685 ± 85 14C-yrs B. P. Marine shells in the Bellingham gmd were dated at 12,150 + 210 14C-yrs B. P.

The Sumas Stade, the last of the Fraser Glaciation advances, occurred between 12,000 and 10,000 14C years B.P. This study combines previous mapping (Easterbrook, 1976; Haugerud, written communication, 1999) with three new tests to establish a chronology for events of the Sumas Stade. Comparison of compositions of pebbles from Sumas outwash using multivariate statistics such as hierarchical clustering and k-means clustering revealed three major groups of late Sumas outwash and one earlier deposit. Magnetic susceptibility and Curie temperature analysis determined a general British Columbia provenance for the Sumas outwash. Flow direction measurements substantiated this determination. A study of the 48 Ma Cooper Mountain pluton (CMP) in the North Cascade Mountains of Washington using anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) defined the orientation of magnetic fabrics. Fabrics in limited areas at the margins of the CMP tend to be parallel to the pluton margin and are therefore interpreted to be emplacement-related. The fabrics in the interior of the body, throughout the bulk of the pluton, are discordant with respect to the NW pluton margin. The fabric is manifest by NW-striking, moderately to steeply dipping foliation and NW-SE trending, moderately to shallowly plunging lineation, approximately parallel to regional …

New paleomagnetic results from 4 m.y. old lava flows from Kauai, Hawaii, suggest that strong poloidal field is associated with an unusual state of the geodynamo that follows attempts at polarity reversal (successful or not). The new data comprise 50 paleomagnetic sites from superposed lava flows occurring just below and above the Kauai reverse-normal polarity transition. A composite record of 45 distinct field determinations was constructed by combining sites that record similar ancient field and correlating them to previously published results from Kauai. Of the 45 data, 25 include paleointensity estimates derived from double-heating experiments. A comparison of the composite …

Recent advances in geologic mapping, aftershock location, and reflection seismology allow geoscientists to image surface and subsurface structures with greater precision. These images demonstrate that earthquake ruptures typically occur along faults or fault systems that display complex 3D geometries. Poly3D, a 3D boundary element code and user interface, enables the integration of these varied data sets to constrain fault geometry and accurately models the complex geometries, limited only by data precision and computing power. Poly3D is based on the analytical solution for the elastic boundary value problem of an angular dislocation in a half space composed of a homogeneous and …

The May 13, 1995 Kozani-Grevena earthquake (Mw=6.5) is a natural laboratory for studying crustal normal fault systems. The event and its aftershocks have been well observed geodetically, seismically, and geologically, providing an opportunity to integrate data sets to create a detailed subsurface fault model and investigate triggering and deformation associated with a large normal fault earthquake. Previous modeling of the earthquake has focused primarily on single geodetic data sets (e.g. inSAR - Meyer et al, 1996, GPS - Clarke et al., 1997) and has led to conflicting subsurface fault interpretations. Temporal gradients in environmental lead concentrations and isotopic compositions trace the rapidly shifting transition from high to low industrial emissions in Yerevan, Armenia following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. Shortly after the breakup, in 1995 and 1996, atmospheric lead concentrations averaged ~0.4 µg/m3 and the combustion of leaded gasoline was the primary source of industrial lead emissions in Yerevan. But by 1998, unleaded gasoline was predominant and atmospheric lead concentrations had decreased by two orders of magnitude to ≤ 0.003 µg/m3 because industrial lead emissions from stationary sources had also been radically curtailed. Amino acids are potentially important nitrogen (N) sources for plants in many ecosystems. However, a quantitative understanding of organic N availability is lacking for most ecosystems. This study estimates seasonal amino acid fluxes in an alpine tundra soil using three independent data sets. In previous work in an alpine dry meadow ecosystem in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, we measured signifcant rates of amino acid production from soil peptides during the plant growing season. This suggested that proteolysis of native soil peptides could serve as a measure of amino acid availability to plants. Here we use a …
