Predicting The Geographic Origin Of Heroin By Multivariate Analysis Of Elemental Composition And Strontium Isotope Ratios, Joshua S. Debord
Predicting The Geographic Origin Of Heroin By Multivariate Analysis Of Elemental Composition And Strontium Isotope Ratios, Joshua S. Debord
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this research was to aid in the fight against the heroin and opioid epidemic by developing new methodology for heroin provenance determination and forensic sample comparison. Over 400 illicit heroin powder samples were analyzed using quadrupole and high-resolution inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (Q-ICP-MS and HR-ICP-MS) in order to measure and identify elemental contaminants useful for associating heroin samples of common origin and differentiating heroin of different geographic origins. Additionally, 198 heroin samples were analyzed by multi-collector ICP-MS (MC-ICP-MS) to measure radiogenic strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) with high-precision for heroin provenance determination, for the …
Determination Of Anthropogenic Radionuclides In Ocean Water Using Extraction Chromatography, Jaimie Daum
Determination Of Anthropogenic Radionuclides In Ocean Water Using Extraction Chromatography, Jaimie Daum
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In the aftermath of the reactor accident in Fukushima, it has become obvious that there is a severe lack in methods that would allow for the rapid determination of anthropogenic radionuclides in ocean water. Current radioanalytical techniques for the determination of radionuclides in natural waters have a number of disadvantages including the fact that they are time consuming, generate a substantial amount of waste, and are typically multi-step processes. Additionally, the elevated amount of dissolved ions in ocean water imparts a complex matrix that can interfere with the rapid separation and determination of anthropogenic radionuclides. Therefore, due to the size, …
Rapid Methods For Actinide And Strontium-89,90 Determination In Urban Matrices, Sherrod Maxwell
Rapid Methods For Actinide And Strontium-89,90 Determination In Urban Matrices, Sherrod Maxwell
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Rapid radiochemical methods are needed to provide fast, reliable analytical measurements on a variety of different sample matrices in the case of a radiological event to protect the public, mitigate dose and protect the environment. If a radiological dispersive device (RDD), an Improvised Nuclear Device (IND) or a nuclear accident occurs, there will be an urgent need for quick analyses of urban matrices materials to support decision-making, dose mitigation and environmental clean-up. Since an incident involving a RDD or IND will likely occur in an urban or metropolitan area, it is very important to employ swift, robust analytical methods that …
Synthesis And Investigation Of Langbeinite-Related Strontium- And Iron-Containing Phosphates, Nataliia Strutynska, Nikolai Slobodyanik, Anastasiia Shatalova
Synthesis And Investigation Of Langbeinite-Related Strontium- And Iron-Containing Phosphates, Nataliia Strutynska, Nikolai Slobodyanik, Anastasiia Shatalova
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The partial substitution of potassium atoms by strontium atoms in initial matrix K$_{3}$Fe$_{2}$(PO$_{4})_{3}$ with formation of complex phosphates K$_{3-2x}$Sr$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$(PO$_{4})_{3}$ ($x =$ 0.75, 1.0, and 1.25) was determined using a solid-state reaction method. According to powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, the prepared phosphates with $x =$ 1.0 and 1.25 crystallize in a cubic system (space group ${P2}_{1}$3) and belong to langbeinite family compounds, while for the sample with $x =$ 0.75 a mixture of langbeinite-type phase and a minor amount of K$_{3}$Fe$_{2}$(PO$_{4})_{3}$ was obtained. The decreasing trend of lattice parameter $a$ with increase of Sr amount in the phosphate confirmed the …
