Factors In Human-Computer Interface Design (A Pilot Study), Susan Stewart

The DoD has budgeted over $9.8 billion for 1995 for information technology, yet many government office workers let their existing systems sit idle. This thesis explores why these computers are sitting idle. This researcher's initial hypothesis was that certain features of the human-computer interface can positively or negatively affect efficiency, retention, and satisfaction level of workers. Although some research is being done in this area, interfaces continue to be of poor quality, especially in the DoD, where long procurement cycles, forced purchases, and limited budgets result in out-of-date software. This paper describes an integrated infrastructure system (with emphasis on pavement and bridge management systems) that allows cost minimization or benefit maximization. It integrates separate infrastructure systems so that management may optimally allocate scarce resources across the combined systems. Fuzzy set theory is used in these optimizations to better address the desirability or undesirability of the condition states used to categorize the infrastructure segments modeled. Both steady-state and multi-year models are part of this system. The full mathematical structure of the simpler steady-state problem is presented, and sample multi-year output showing the integrated budgets is given.

Current Foreign Military Sales FMS models provide stock levels that result in a very low system availability or a funding requirement that exceeds the overall budget. The purpose of this research was to determine if an inventory model exists that can be used in FMS reparable sparing to provide a more efficient and economical inventory purchase. The Aircraft Sustainability Model ASM is such a model, providing the most aircraft availability possible from a given inventory investment by computing the optimal number of spare parts to buy for each item. Many previous GDSS designs have had success in these experiments with brainstorming but have been limited in providing judgment and choice support. Asia is experiencing a rapid growth in intra-Asian tourism, and is finding that the spending priorities of these new visitor markets is quite different from traditional markets. Not only have Hong Kong's markets changed, but the economic operational environment is becoming increasingly difficult as a result of the change in sovereignty in 1997, increasing land prices, and new regulations. The current structure of the hotel industry is out of balance with the demands of these new markets. Hong Kong now needs to consider some intervention in the hotel industry to further encourage the development of properties in this mid-market.

Paradoxically, where the issue of efficiency has become critically important in recent times, namely the allocation of the environment and its resources and amenity, the techniques of economists have been found wanting and less than fully developed. The current technology in the industry, CISC microprocessors, have reached a price/performance limit. The industry is turning to RISC microprocessors for improved speed at lower costs. Intel, the current industry leader, is being challenged by AMD and Cyrix, who manufacture clones of Intel¹s microprocessors. In addition, Motorola, another giant in the industry, has teamed up with Apple and IBM to challenge Intel¹s dominance of the industry. This article investigates international differences in environmental knowledge and attitudes among business administration students. The Environmental Knowledge and Attitude Scale, developed by Maloney, Ward, and Braucht (1975) and used by Synodinos (1990), was administered to 85 upperdivision business administration students at Loyola University Chicago and 111 upperdivision business students at the National University of Singapore. No significant differences were found between the two samples on the Knowledge, Concern, or Willingness to Act subscales. The United States students' higher mean score on the Actual Behavior subscale was significant but may only reflect relative possibilities for participation in environmental activities. This proceedings paper was the first to suggest using a Gaussian g-prior combined with a point mass to undertake Bayesian variable selection in a Gaussian linear regression model. It also was the first to suggest integrating out the regression parameters and variance in closed form, resulting in an efficient Gibbs sampling scheme. The idea was applied to estimate regression functions in an additive model by using a linear basis expansion for each component function in an additive model. The conference proceeding was eventually published in a slightly tighter form in Journal of Econometrics (1996).
