Neglected Standard: History Of Mathematics In The Service Of Mathematics Education, Calvin Jongsma

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

An integrated approach that more intrinsically connects the historical development of mathematics with its content enables students to learn how an idea or method emerged while simultaneously exposing (i) the dynamic nature of mathematics along with (ii) its connections to other fields, and (iii) its cultural embeddedness. Examples will be given from a textbook currently in development.

Green Dharma: Clearing The Pollution Of Our Minds To Save The Environment, Richard Dale Jenkinson Iv Apr 2009

Green Dharma: Clearing The Pollution Of Our Minds To Save The Environment, Richard Dale Jenkinson Iv

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper seeks to examine the relationship in Mongolia between Buddhism and the environment, as well as the condition of that relationship, the environmental work being done out of the motivation of Buddhist beliefs, and how to improve the environmental condition through Buddhism. Great understanding of this topic was obtained through interviews with Buddhist monks, of both Mongolian and Western origins and from both urban Ulaanbaatar and the rural countryside of Mongolia. Perhaps some of the greatest understanding came from simple everyday observations and interactions with the Buddhist community. Concrete textual information came from reading endless Buddhist sutras, scholarly books, …

Why We Do It – The University Of South Florida Tampa Library’S Commitment To Open-Access Publishing, Todd A. Chavez

Academic Resources Faculty and Staff Publications

The University of South Florida Tampa Library's support for open-access content is part of the organization's mission to advance scholarly communication generally and an important element of the Karst Information Portal initiative. As the costs associated with journal subscriptions increase and pressures to ensure unfettered access to high-quality, peer-reviewed research mount, research libraries must partner with scholars to establish sustainable open-access publishing models.

Why Did Lagrange "Prove" The Parallel Postulate?, Judith V. Grabiner Jan 2009

Why Did Lagrange "Prove" The Parallel Postulate?, Judith V. Grabiner

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

In 1806, Joseph-Louis Lagrange read a memoir "proving" Euclid's parallel postulate to the Institut de France in Paris. The memoir still exists in manuscript, and we’ll look at what it says. We ask why he tried to prove the postulate, and why he attacked the problem in the way that he did. We also look at how the ideas in this manuscript are related to such things as Lagrange’s philosophy of mathematics, artists’ ideas about space, Newtonian mechanics, and Leibniz's Principle of Sufficient Reason. Finally, we reflect on how this episode changes our views about eighteenth-century attitudes toward geometry, space, …

Review Of Hard Road West: History And Geology Along The Gold Rush Trail By Keith Heyer Meldahl, Harmon D. Maher Jr. Jan 2009

Review Of Hard Road West: History And Geology Along The Gold Rush Trail By Keith Heyer Meldahl, Harmon D. Maher Jr.

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

The dust jacket of Hard Road West promises familiar pleasures to John McPhee lovers, and so I picked the book up with great anticipation. McPhee’s works have greatly heightened the interest of writers and readers in the genre of creative nonfiction, and while for me, Keith Meldahl’s work does not quite reach McPhee’s stratospheric heights, for the right audience it is definitely a very good read.

Gathering Leadership Momentum Across Great Distances: Creating An Online Community Of Practice, Erin Dini-Davis, Danielle Theiss-White

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

At the 2007 Mountain Plains Library Association Leadership (MPLA) Institute, held in New Mexico, USA, eight academic librarians formed an online multi-state, multigenerational community of practice. MPLA is a twelve-state library association within the United States. Using Google Groups™, the members formed an online environment called the MPLA Community of Practice for continuing development of the leadership skills presented at the Institute. These early-career librarians represent diverse educational backgrounds and work in libraries serving varied populations with differing disciplinary emphases. The group meets monthly with each member preparing and facilitating online discussions, complete with personal assessments, topical readings, and questions. …

A Collection Of Micrographs: Where Science And Art Meet, Vuk Uskoković Jan 2009

A Collection Of Micrographs: Where Science And Art Meet, Vuk Uskoković

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Micrographs obtained using different instrumental techniques are presented with the purpose of demonstrating their artistic qualities. The quality of uniformity currently dominates the aesthetic assessment in scientific practice and is discussed in relation to the classical appreciation of the interplay between symmetry and asymmetry in arts. It is argued that scientific and artistic qualities have converged and inspired each other throughout millennia. With scientific discoveries and inventions enriching the world of communication, broadening the space for artistic creativity and making artistic products more accessible than ever, science inevitably influences artistic creativity. On the other hand, the importance of aesthetic principles …

Correlation Of Music Charts And Search Engine Rankings, Martin Klein, Olena Hunsicker, Michael Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We investigate the question whether expert rankings of real-world entities correlate with search engine (SE) rankings of corresponding web resources. We compare Billboards "Hot 100 Airplay" music charts with SE rankings of associated web resources. Out of nine comparisons we found two strong, two moderate, two weak and one negative correlation. The remaining two comparisons were inconclusive.

"Your Cell Will Teach You Everything": Old Wisdom, Modern Science, And The Art Of Attention, Noreen L. Herzfeld

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Here is a brief excerpt of the content:

A brother came to Scetis to visit Abba Moses and asked him "Father, give me a word." The old man said to him "Go, sit in your cell, and your cell will teach you everything." 1 Among the Desert Fathers, Christian monks of the fourth and fifth centuries, it was customary for a novice to go to an elder and ask for "a word," a word of advice, of counsel, a word to take home and reflect on. What does this word of advice say to us today?

A Multitasking World

"Your …
