Is There A Need For Cervical Collar Usage Post Anterior Cervical Decompression And Fusion Using Interbody Cages? A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial, Allan Abbott, Marie Halvorsen, Asa Dedering
Is There A Need For Cervical Collar Usage Post Anterior Cervical Decompression And Fusion Using Interbody Cages? A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial, Allan Abbott, Marie Halvorsen, Asa Dedering
Allan D. Abbott
Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a common surgical intervention for radiculopathy resulting from degenerative cervical spine conditions. Post-surgical cervical collar use is believed to reduce post-operative pain, provide the patient with a sense of security during activities of daily living and even reduce rates of non-fusion. This prospective randomized controlled pilot trial investigates trial design feasibility in relation to prospective physical, functional, and quality of life-related outcomes of patients undergoing ACDF with interbody cage, with (n = 17) and without (n = 16) post-operative cervical collar usage. Results show that the sample provides sufficient statistical power to show …

In light of the increasing number of girls participating in sports, the pressures associated with "big time sports," and interest in preventing alcohol-related problems in female athletes, the purpose of this viewpoint is to examine the prevalence of alcohol abuse in female athletes and to provide coaches and teachers with suggestions for education and prevention. Some of these include a continual increase in the competition, negotiating relationships with teammates and coaches, performance anxiety or fear of failure, decreased social interaction due to competition, time management issues, burnout, and coping with injuries (Storch, Storch, Killiany, & Roberti, 2005).

In higher education in the United States, women are often underrepresented in leadership positions. When women try administration, they face a higher rate of attrition than their male counterparts. Given the lack of women in leadership positions and the failure of the academy to retain women administrators, a group of women administrators and faculty with many collective years of experience in higher education assembled to write this paper. Our writing group consisted of 2 Chairs, 2 Deans, 1 Associate Dean, 2 pre-tenure faculty members, and a Provost, representing four different institutions. The authors of this paper suggest that applying the …

Cornography: Selling Women's Professional Basketball In A Girls' Basketball State, Shelley Lucas
Shelley Lucas
Examines the marketing strategy of the short-lived Iowa Cornets, part of the Women's Professional Basketball League (WBL) in the late 1970's. Hoping to capitalize on the popularity of Iowa girls' high school basketball, the Cornets emphasized everything Iowa, signing home-grown players, hiring coaches with Iowa connections, and employing "cornography" - green and gold team colors, an ear-of-corn mascot named Shucks, and a bus called the Corn Dog. After a year, however, the team adopted some of the WBL's apologetic strategies, overemphasizing players' femininity and heterosexuality.

Balance problems and falls are a common concern among individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Falls frequently occur during daily activities such as reaching into cupboards in the kitchen or bathroom. This study compared the correlation among two standard postural stability tests - the postural stability score on the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and the Functional Reach Test (FRT) - and ecologically valid reaching tasks that correspond to reaching at different cupboard heights among 20 individuals with PD and 20 age-matched controls. Both the FRT and the UPDRS postural stability tests are quick measures that can be performed during …

What happens to those women coming out of a women’s refuge? Can they live away from Domestic Violence? Do they have parenting skills? To answer these questions a case study methodology combined with theories from Humanistic, Social and Community Psychology was implemented to analyse the contents of the meetings held by the refuge’s Self-Help Group,. This group consisted of 11 women, ages 29 to 48 yo: Five of them still in domestic violence; and the rest escaping DV: two, in the refuge, and four who had left 12 to 36 months ago. The first finding: When a woman is still …

Deliberate efforts to control body weight (e.g., purposeful dieting, prolonged fasting, self-induced vomiting, the use of diet pills), or unintentional restriction of energy intake that does not cover the costs of energy expenditure, all have a role in creating low energy stores (Golden, 2002; Manore, 2002). However, when young females develop patterns of unhealthy eating in conjunction with strenuous exercise during this window of bone accrual, menstrual dysfunction and low estrogen levels that may result can undo the beneficial effects of exercise on bone density (Drinkwater et al., 1984; Gordon, 2003; Miller, 2003) and place amenorrheic females at risk for …

Yes, there are those states, districts, schools, and individual physical educators who have made positive changes in standards, curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices; however, the majority of secondary physical education departments still host a "one size fits all" program, whereby all students participate in the same traditional activities in the same, traditional, command style of teaching. [...] while some girls enrolled in a high school physical education program may want to learn and play flag football and a select group of boys may want to improve their fitness through step aerobics, they cannot.

Physical education teacher education (PETE) is one of many disciplines in higher education responsible for preparing future educators. Education in general is increasingly politicized by public officials and scrutinized by the media, and the programs that train tomorrow's public school teachers are no exception. Between the politics that shape many of the choices in teacher preparation and teachers' own sense of what needs to be taught, PETE faculty struggle to answer the question, "How can we deliver the best possible teacher education program to our undergraduates?"

This paper examines issues fundamental to educating thoughtful, competent, intelligent teachers by highlighting arguments against out-of-field teaching in physical education teacher education programs. It discusses the inaccurate notion among some people that a good teacher can teach anything, noting what actually constitutes a good teacher in physical education teacher preparation. The paper explains that physical education teacher education programs have the potential to fall under the guise of out-of-field teaching. Teacher preparation programs house an array of courses from the applied sciences and allied fields of physical education, which can stand alone as separate fields of study yet are possible …
