The Hypoalgesic Effect Of Tens During Needle Emg Study, Wang-Lin Su, Hsuan-Yi Lin, Gwo-Chi Hu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Needle electromyography (EMG) is an important diagnostic and prognostic tool in physical medicine. However, some patients are unable to tolerate the pain associated with the procedure. While there has been research in methods aimed at reducing the pain from needle EMG, all have obvious disadvantages.TENS is a widely accepted tool for producing analgesia, but it has not been studied as an analgesic adjunct to needle EMG. We designed a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study to investigate the effectiveness of TENS on alleviating the pain during a needle EMG study.Fifty-nine subjects undergoing needle EMG study in an upper extremity were randomly assigned …

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the muscle activity of the shoulder joint force couple induced by the upper trapezius, lower trapezius, and serratus anterior to determine if they are more effectively recruited during the traditional exercise position of forward shoulder elevation in 145° of shoulder abduction versus a modified position of shoulder external rotation while in 80° of shoulder abduction and 90° of elbow flexion

Methods: Nine participants took part in this randomized study in which EMG data was collected during 4 exercise trials of 10 repetitions each on the right shoulder. EMG activity was monitored …

Purpose. Age-associated muscle weakness, postural instability, and orthostatic hypotension have been identified as contributing factors to falls , but the relationships among them are not clear. Therefore, the purpose of this study, a two-way factorial design, was to investigate the differences in lower extremity (LE) muscle activity, blood pressure (BP), and heart rate (HR) between young and older individuals in an upright position. Methods. Ten young males (20-24 yrs.) and 10 older males (65-82 yrs.) stood for 15 minutes while BP, HR, and LE electromyography (EMG) were recorded at one minute intervals . A two-way ANOVA was used …
