Cigarette Smoking And Risk Of Glioma: A Prospective Cohort Study, Stephanie A. Navarro Silvera, Anthony B. Miller, Thomas E. Rohan

The etiology of glioma, the most commonly diagnosed malignant brain tumor among adults in the United States, is poorly understood. N‐nitroso compounds are known carcinogens, which are found in cigarette smoke and can induce gliomas in rats. On this basis, it has been hypothesized that cigarette smoking may be associated with an increased risk of glioma. We investigated the association between cigarette smoking and glioma risk in the National Breast Screening Study, which included 89,835 Canadian women aged 40–59 years at recruitment between 1980 and 1985. The objective of this study was to assess if interaction between users and producers of research is associated with a greater level of adoption of research findings in the design and delivery of health care programs. Responses to the dissemination of a research report on breast cancer prevention were compared between two groups of public health units in Ontario, Canada. Although all public health units received the report, only a subset of units was involved in the development of the report, while others were not. Coming Of Age And Taking Stock: The State Of Academic Health Policy Research Centres In Canada, Michele L. Mekel, Samuel E.D Shortt

This descriptive study takes stock of Canada's health services and health policy research capacity by profiling the organizational models, operational challenges, and success strategies utilized by Canadian academic health policy research centres. While each such centre is unique, the results point to some common themes, including symbiotic relationships between centres and their ministries of health, pervasive infrastructure funding challenges and the importance of having a supportive academic home.
