Navigating The Adoption Of Interprofessional Education As A Performance Standard In Dietetics Education, Paige Whitney, Mary Ann Kluge Jan 2023

Navigating The Adoption Of Interprofessional Education As A Performance Standard In Dietetics Education, Paige Whitney, Mary Ann Kluge

Journal of Dietetic Education

Abstract: The purpose of this collective case study was to explore the diffusion of interprofessional education (IPE) in response to specific Future Education Model (FEM) Graduate Program accreditation standards and performance indicators. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 12 FEM program directors from geographically diverse US states. Website and document review were triangulated with the interview data, and Roger’s Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) was used as a theoretical framework to add dimension to the study. Three themes emerged from analysis: 1) Accreditation standards are not the driving force of IPE; 2) Program Directors can serve …

After Initial Accreditation - The Phab Annual Report, Gurleen Roberts, Emily Frantz, Jack Kennedy

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH) was the first health district in Georgia to achieve accreditation by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) (accredited on May 12, 2015). Since then, two additional health districts, DeKalb (3-5) and Gwinnett, Newton, and Rockdale County Health Departments (3-4), have achieved accreditation. Efforts are underway among health districts statewide to become accredited, yet, little is known about life after accreditation. This presentation will highlight CDPH’s approach to submitting the PHAB Annual Report, which is required of health departments in order to maintain their accreditation status.

Methods: CDPH will provide an overview of the …

Kaizen: Improving Patient Flow, Gurleen Roberts, Jack Kennedy, Catherine Smythe, Dawn Krahwinkel, Melissa Green

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: Since Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH) achieved accreditation in May 2015, efforts to mature a culture of quality have been emphasized. In addition, the Adult Health Clinic moved to a new facility in Spring 2016. This move has improved many patient flow issues, but also has had unexpected consequences that spurred interest in doing several quality improvement (QI) projects.

Methods: Rather than doing one QI project at a time, a kaizen event was held. Kaizen is a Japanese term for continuous improvement. This workshop allowed the Adult Health Team to plan seven QI projects and implement them simultaneously …

Studies that exist on quality improvement efforts within local health departments indicate that there needs to be clearer approaches for achieving a culture of quality. This study describes how a local health department used the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO’s) Roadmap to an Organizational Culture of Quality Improvement (QI Roadmap) to successfully build a quality culture on its journey to becoming accredited, as reflected in results from a February 2016 survey. Local health departments who invest in and promote QI efforts that are aligned with strategic priorities; establish the necessary infrastructure to regularly track and report …

Utilizing Performance Management To Harness The Power Of Quality Improvement In Public Health, Leslie M. Beitsch, Valerie A. Yeager, John W. Moran

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

Widespread adoption of quality improvement activities in public health trails other U.S. sectors. Launching the national public health accreditation program of the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) has propelled health department momentum around quality improvement uptake. Domain 9 of the PHAB standards focuses on evaluation and improvement of performance, and is acting as a strong driver for quality improvement and performance management implementation within health departments. Several performance management models have received broad acceptance, including among government and nonprofits, and have direct public health application. Turning Point is a model designed specifically for public health users. All models in current …

Accreditation Intent, Community Health Assessments, And Local Health Department–Hospital Collaboration, Erik L. Carlton, Simone Singh Mar 2015

Accreditation Intent, Community Health Assessments, And Local Health Department–Hospital Collaboration, Erik L. Carlton, Simone Singh

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

Background: Community health assessments (CHAs) are among the most core of activities conducted by local health departments (LHDs), and many LHDs have been conducting CHAs on a regular basis for years. More recently, completing a CHA has also become a prerequisite for LHDs seeking accreditation by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). Similarly, under the Affordable Care Act, tax-exempt hospitals are required to conduct periodic community health needs assessments. Opportunities thus exist for LHDs and tax-exempt hospitals to engage in collaborations related to CHAs. Yet, it remains unclear whether interest in PHAB accreditation provides incentive to LHDs to engage in …

Quality improvement (QI) in public health departments is a focus in this sixth issue of Frontiers. Data is important to the development of quality improvement efforts. As we see growth of and meaningful use of electronic health records, the health department is in a position to take the lead as a data hub and to use this information wisely to both improve their QI efforts and link that QI to outcomes.

Do Phab Accreditation Prerequisites Predict Local Health Departments’ Intentions To Seek Voluntary National Accreditation?, Gulzar H. Shah, Kate Beatty, Carolyn Leep Mar 2013

Do Phab Accreditation Prerequisites Predict Local Health Departments’ Intentions To Seek Voluntary National Accreditation?, Gulzar H. Shah, Kate Beatty, Carolyn Leep

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

Accreditation has been identified as a crucial strategy for strengthening the public health infrastructure. As agencies prepare for accreditation, it is important to understand how intentions to seek accreditation are related to the current level of readiness based on the three Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) prerequisites. Using the National Association of County and City Health Officials’ (NACCHO) 2010 Profile Study, we examined the relationship between the PHAB accreditation prerequisites and local health department (LHD) intentions to seek PHAB accreditation using multinomial logistic regression. Our results indicate that completion of a community health assessment (CHA) or community health improvement plan …
