Planning, Implementation, And Formative Evaluation Of A Food Literacy Program, Heather M. Thomas
Planning, Implementation, And Formative Evaluation Of A Food Literacy Program, Heather M. Thomas
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The overall purpose of this dissertation was to examine the planning, implementation, and formative evaluation of a community-based food literacy program for youth. Article 1 provided a summary of the community-based cooking program for at-risk youth. Objectives included the provision of applied food literacy and cooking skills education augmented with fieldtrips to local farms. Eight at-risk youth (five girls and three boys, mean age = 14.6) completed the intervention. Post intervention, five of eight participants completed in-depth interviews about their experiences.
Article 2 was a formative evaluation of the cooking program focused on gaining an understanding of participants’ (i.e., at-risk …

Fetal Growth Restriction: Molecular Mechanisms And Long-Term Outcomes, Caroline D. Albion
Fetal Growth Restriction: Molecular Mechanisms And Long-Term Outcomes, Caroline D. Albion
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Fetal undernutrition is a major factor in the pathophysiology of fetal growth restriction (FGR) in many species, including humans. Our hypothesis is that mild maternal nutrient restriction (MNR) in a mouse provides a clinically relevant model to study FGR mechanisms and long-term effects similar to humans and the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) predisposition. A MNR mouse model of FGR was developed by feeding mothers 70% normal daily caloric intake during E6.5 to E18.5 gestation. Significant reduction in fetal weight and fetal liver and lung weights with less impact on brain weight resulted, similar to asymmetric human FGR. …
Indigenous Beliefs About Biomedical And Bush Medicine Treatment Efficacy For Indigenous Cancer Patients: A Review Of The Literature, K. D. Schaik, S. C. Thompson
Indigenous Beliefs About Biomedical And Bush Medicine Treatment Efficacy For Indigenous Cancer Patients: A Review Of The Literature, K. D. Schaik, S. C. Thompson
Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)
Background: Australia’s Indigenous people suffer from higher cancer mortality than non-Indigenous Australians, a discrepancy partly caused by differences in beliefs about treatment efficacy between Indigenous patients and their non-Indigenous healthcare providers. This paper critically reviews the literature associated with Indigenous beliefs about cancer treatment, both ‘bush medicine’ and biomedical, in order to provide recommendations to healthcare providers about accommodating Indigenous beliefs when treating cancer.
Methods: A search was undertaken of peer-reviewed journal papers using electronic databases and citation snowballing. Papers were selected for inclusion based upon relevance to themes that addressed the research questions. Results: Literature suggests that Indigenous beliefs …
The Importance Of Self-Efficacy And Basic Psychological Needs In Children’S Physical Activity: Measurement, Prediction And Intervention, Casey E. Gray
The Importance Of Self-Efficacy And Basic Psychological Needs In Children’S Physical Activity: Measurement, Prediction And Intervention, Casey E. Gray
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The importance of physical activity in the overall health promotion and primary prevention of cardiovascular disease risk factors and metabolic diseases in children is well established. Nonetheless, interventions to increase physical activity among this population have been largely unsuccessful. The main objective of the research in this dissertation was to explore the suitability of self-efficacy and basic psychological needs for physical activity prediction and intervention in children. Item generation and psychometric evaluation of psychological questionnaires occurred in study 1 (Chapter 2). Using a prospective design, study 2 (Chapter 3) established task efficacy, barriers efficacy, competence, and autonomy as significant predictors …

Objective: To estimate the number of deaths among people released from prison in Australia in the 2007–08 financial year, within 4 weeks and 1 year of release. Design, participants and setting: Application of crude mortality rates for ex-prisoners (obtained from two independent, state-based record-linkage studies [New South Wales and Western Australia]) to a national estimate of the number and characteristics of people released from prison in 2007–08. Main outcome measures: Estimated number of deaths among adults released from Australian prisons in 2007–08, within 4 weeks and 1 year of release, classified by age, sex, Indigenous status and cause of death. …

Community-Based Knowledge Translation: Unexplored Opportunities, Anita Kothari, Rebecca Armstrong
Community-Based Knowledge Translation: Unexplored Opportunities, Anita Kothari, Rebecca Armstrong

BACKGROUND: Knowledge translation is an interactive process of knowledge exchange between health researchers and knowledge users. Given that the health system is broad in scope, it is important to reflect on how definitions and applications of knowledge translation might differ by setting and focus. Community-based organizations and their practitioners share common characteristics related to their setting, the evidence used in this setting, and anticipated outcomes that are not, in our experience, satisfactorily reflected in current knowledge translation approaches, frameworks, or tools.
DISCUSSION: Community-based organizations face a distinctive set of challenges and concerns related to engaging in the knowledge translation process, …

Depressive Symptoms In Mothers Of Children With New-Onset Epilepsy: A Prospective Study, Mark Anthony Ferro
Depressive Symptoms In Mothers Of Children With New-Onset Epilepsy: A Prospective Study, Mark Anthony Ferro
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Having a child diagnosed with a chronic illness such as epilepsy is a major source of stress for caregivers. Up to half of mothers of children with epilepsy are at increased risk for clinical depression and symptoms of maternal depression are associated with poorer health outcomes in these children. The purpose of this study was to: 1) estimate the prevalence and course of depressive symptoms over 24 months among mothers of children with new-onset epilepsy; 2) identify subgroups of mothers that share similar trajectories of depressive symptoms; and, 3) assess the family factors involved in the causal pathway between maternal …

Pathology Presentations
The diversity of foods available and the way we produce, process and distribute them can have consequences in terms of infectious illnesses. This talk by Dr. Robert Lannigan, professor in Western’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, explores some of these concerns.
The Characteristics Of Successful Evidence Retrieval By Nephrologists And The Impact Of Pubmed Search Filters, Salimah Shariff
The Characteristics Of Successful Evidence Retrieval By Nephrologists And The Impact Of Pubmed Search Filters, Salimah Shariff
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Background: Clinicians frequently search PubMed to guide patient care. This study investigated the factors that impact successful searching and the utility of PubMed search filters.
Methods: A random sample of nephrologists was surveyed between 2008 and 2010; 160 valid responses were received (72% response rate). One group of 60 respondents was presented with the same two clinical questions, while the other 100 were each presented with a unique clinical question. The clinical questions were based on recently published systematic reviews. Respondents provided the search terms they would type into PubMed to address their clinical question(s). All physician-provided searches …

BACKGROUND: The Seniors Health Research Transfer Network (SHRTN) Collaborative is a network of networks that work together to improve the health and health care of Ontario seniors. The collaborative facilitates knowledge exchange through a library service, knowledge brokers (KBs), local implementation teams, collaborative technology, and, most importantly, Communities of Practice (CoPs) whose members work together to identify innovations, translate evidence, and help implement changes. This project aims to increase our understanding of knowledge-to-action (KTA) processes mobilized through SHRTN CoPs that are working to improve the health of Ontario seniors. For this research, KTA refers to the movement of research and experience-based …
