There is evidence that indicates the immense benefits of physical activity for the physical and mental health of youth. To respond to the youth mental health crisis in Indigenous communities in Canada, a culturally appropriate, land-based active living program called Smart Indigenous Youth (SIY) was developed by the Digital Epidemiology and Population Health Laboratory (DEPtH Lab). Overweight (OW; body mass index [BMI] of 25.0 to 29.9 kg/m² ), and obesity (OB; BMI of 30 and greater kg/m²) are conditions where excessive fat accumulation presents a risk to health. Prepregnancy BMI and maternal excessive gestational weight (EGWG) gain are risk factors for higher infant birthweight and childhood OW or OB. The Nutrition and Exercise Lifestyle Intervention Program (NELIP) is a combined intervention designed to prevent EGWG in individuals with OW and OB. Since 2018, the number of overdoses reported by London housing and emergency shelter agencies to the city of London has increased by 790%.These agencies currently have inconsistent overdose response policies that lack research-based support, and want to establish comprehensive best practices that support those involved at all levels.

This summer I looked more into adolescent girls’ physical activity engagement and its’ relationship to weight-based teasing. This topic intrigued me because from my own sport experiences, I saw first-hand how compared to boys, adolescent girls dis-engage from sport and exercise at a disproportionately higher rate and are at higher risk for body shame and self-objectification. This gender inequity in sport and physical activity is first observed in adolescence and tracks well into adulthood. The purpose of this summer's research activities examined how self-compassion and weight-related teasing relate to self-conscious emotions and sport and physical activity participation.

Due to the high degree of infectivity, many countries all over the globe attempted to counter the virus by instituting nation-wide lockdowns. Over the last year, three major tools were developed to examine key influences on AST and children’s health and well-being. These tools included two pilot surveys - one for parents and one for children from grades four to eight located in South Western Ontario. The anticipation from companies, their shareholders, and the patients poised to benefit are met with stiff statistical and methodological requirements set forth by Health Canada’s Health Products and Food Branch (HPFB). Once a pharmacotherapy has been approved by the HPFB, however, the onus to monitor these drugs falls largely on the shoulders of Health Canada, the manufacturers, and to a lesser degree, the Drug Safety and Effectiveness Network (DSEN). Paramedics on the front lines of Ontario’s COVID-19 pandemic response play an imperative role in patient care and infection management. They take measures to limit risks of contamination to themselves, other patients and providers while delivering this essential healthcare service but are often less recognized for their efforts. From 21 interviews conducted between April to June 2020, a secondary analysis on specific mental health concerns and stressors was completed. A popular approach to study HIV outbreaks is to cluster cases based on genetic similarity. However, there is no widely-used statistical criterion which optimizes the parameters for sequence-based clustering methods. The relationship between a cluster-defining similarity threshold and it’s associated set of clusters can be analogized to the aggregation level in the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP).

Hypothesis

Background: Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) are the leading cause of death for people under the age of 17 years. Almost 80% of rear seat motor vehicle passengers are children. Previous studies have shown that a large fraction of injuries to children in MVCs involved the head and chest. In this study, the hypothesis that children under the age of eight using a forward-facing child restraint system (FFCRS) will have more severe head injuries than children using any other type of restraints in an MVC was tested.

This abstract explores improving health outcomes for Canada’s Indigenous peoples. The increased prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and diabetes in this population makes this a public health problem because diabetes has long-term complications that affect the cardiovascular system and can result in disability and premature death.

It is well established that there are many health risks associated with prolonged sedentary time.¹ Unfortunately, research conducted on university students is limited but yet they experience excessive periods of sitting time during class and while studying.

Methods:

Recently, we investigated the effect of sitting, dynamic sitting, and standing desks on classroom performance of university students.² Participants performed three 3-minute classroom simulations, one for each of the three desks. The order of the desks and simulations were randomized. Each of the simulations included a different typing and memory task.

The relatively recent increase in cases of allergies and asthma, especially in industrialised nations of the north and west, has been explained by the “hygiene hypothesis”—viz., that increased cleanliness and sanitation have unintended negative consequences for immune health—an hypothesis that has received robust epidemiological support (e.g., Platts-Mills 2002).
