The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine how ethno-specific not-for-profit long-term care (LTC) homes in Ontario perform in comparison to mainstream not-for-profit LTC homes using nine RAI-MDS 2.0 quality indicators. Publicly available data from three sources: the Canadian Institute for Health Information "Your Health System: In Depth" database from the Continuing Care Reporting System, data on Ontario ethno-specific not-for-profit LTC homes from the Home and Community Care Support Services, and data on home and ownership records from the Ministry of Long-Term Care “Public Reporting” website, between 2017-2022, were retrieved and analyzed. When patients present to an emergency room (ER) with a nosebleed, one technique that physicians employ is the application of nasal packing. Merocel is a common nasal pack utilized in ER because of their low cost. Rapid Rhino is a nasal packing that is more comfortable for patients but is more costly than Merocel. Costing for epistaxis treatment is more than initial treatment costs and needs to consider rebleed rates. Using a retrospective cohort study design with covariates adjusted by propensity scores, we compared the costs associated with Merocel, and Rapid Rhino from the hospital and provincial healthcare perspectives. Background: Fall-related injuries in older adults result in serious consequences to individuals and health care system, especially with the increasing aging population. The purpose of this study was to (1) describe medication prescription patterns within one year prior to fall-related injuries; (2) identify medication classes prescribed within 30 days prior to the injury that were associated to fall-related injury; and (3) examine the association between fall-related injuries and continuous use or new initiation of most commonly prescribed medications.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a prevalent chronic disease that requires comprehensive approaches to manage. Interprofessional teams are effective at providing chronic disease management and care that meets the needs of patients. As part of an ongoing spread, an interprofessional primary care COPD management program was implemented at a family health team in Ontario. A qualitative case study was performed to determine the supporting or hindering factors to the implementation of the program. Treating mental illness in primary care improves access to care, but it is unclear how to encourage family physicians to provide adequate mental health services. One approach may be changing how they are remunerated. The objectives of this thesis were to: 1) review the literature on the association between physician remuneration and provision of mental health services, and 2) assess the impact of blended capitation, compared to blended fee-for-service (FFS), on mental health services provision in Ontario. This matched case-control study examined the association between environmental heat exposure and hospital encounters with acute kidney injury (AKI) among adults, 66 years and older, in the province of Ontario, Canada. We matched 52,913 cases who had an AKI event during the warm seasons (April to September) of 2005 to 2012 with 174,222 controls who did not have an AKI event. We matched cases to controls on date, age, sex, residential status, income, and history of chronic kidney disease using a variable one to four matching ratio. To date, most Black hypertension literature centers on the risk factors predictive of hypertension, and the treatment of this condition within this population. The purpose of this critical narrative inquiry is to better understand how Black men make sense of their hypertension diagnosis, and how they negotiate this condition into their everyday lives. Eight individual in-depth interviews were utilized to elicit stories from four Black men living in Ontario, Canada. The vast majority of studies on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are based on samples with inherent age, sex, and referral biases. Therefore, the current study used population-based data to 1) estimate the prevalence of adult ADHD (as well as previous diagnosis and medication use using an ADHD screener) and co-occurring psychiatric distress and substance use in Ontario 2) examine the sex differences in ADHD screening status and co-occurring psychiatric distress and substance use and 3) model ADHD screening status as a risk factor for psychiatric distress using the 2011 cycle of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Monitor.
