Colorectal Cancer Differences In Staging And Survival: Appalachian And Non-Appalchian Kentuckians, Ripley Lucas

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. Historically, the Appalachian region of Kentucky has experienced disparities in colorectal cancer screening and survival as compared to both the non-Appalachian region of the state and the United States. The aim of this paper is to investigate the differences in cancer staging and survival after diagnosis in Appalachian and non-Appalachian Kentuckians. The present time period of study is a retrospective, population-based cohort with data taken from the Kentucky Cancer Registry. Introduction Objective of the study was to explore the impact of health insurance and socio-demographic factors on survival for breast cancer patients in Kentucky. Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women in the US. Breast cancer survival is affected by various factors including health insurance, residence, age, race, geographical distance, income.

Methods The data were obtained from Kentucky Cancer Registry and included 47,128 women diagnosed with primary breast cancer between 2000 to 2014. The relationship of health insurance and other socio-demographic factors was analyzed using Cox regression.

Introduction: Hepatocellular carcinoma incidence and mortality rates are the rise in the United States and in Kentucky as well. According to the National Cancer Institute, there will be an estimated 40,710 new cases of liver and intrahepatic bile duct cancer and 28,920 deaths in 2017, with than 20% of 5-years survivors 1. The numbers of new cases expected by year 2030 is 37,574 2. The aim of this capstone is to assess the risk factors of late-stage diagnosis and survivability in Kentucky.
