Practice Problem: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is one of the leading pandemics in the world. In 2019, 38 million people were living with HIV around the world. Of those, roughly 87% were aware of their HIV status.
PICOT: In patients with high risk for HIV, how does implementing a pre-exposure (PrEP) screening tool compared to randomly screening for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) affect the prescribing of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) within eight weeks?
Evidence: In 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended PrEP for the prevention of HIV in high-risk individuals. The patients include men who have sex with …

Practice Problem: Kidney failure affects 0.1% - 0.2% of the general population, yet the dialysis expenditure is 5%-7% of total healthcare budget spending. The increased incidence of chronic disease will result in more End Stage Renal Disease patients on dialysis along with more comorbidities. Thus, it is imperative for health organizations to have well established protocols and guidelines to manage the care of the dialysis patient.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: in patients receiving dialysis at an acute care dialysis unit (P), does utilizing a Standardized Policy for Quality Reporting on Dialysis Water Testing and …

Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in Hispanic women in the U.S., with mammography being the most effective means of reducing breast cancer mortality. Promotoras have been shown to improve health promotion, including mammography, among the Hispanic population.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: In Hispanic women 40 years or older (P), how does the use of a promotora intervention (I), compared to no promotora intervention (C), affect mammography rates (O) within an 8-week period (T)?
Evidence: Twenty-one studies that met the inclusion criteria supported the use of promotoras to improve mammography …

Practice Problem: This evidence-based practice project aimed to increase patient referrals to the MOVE program by educating providers about the importance and benefit of the Managing Obesity for Veterans Everywhere (MOVE) Program at the Biloxi, Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center.
PICOT: In obese, ambulatory care patients, what motivates increased referrals by practitioners to the MOVE Program to decrease BMI compared to the current referral system within two months?
Evidence: There was poor participation in the MOVE Program despite the high number of obese patients at the Biloxi, VA Medical Center. According to the data, only sixty of the 18,000 …
