Racial/ethnic communities bear a disproportionate burden when examining cancer mortality and infection-related cancer incidence rates. According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), health literacy and clear communication between professionals and patients are crucial to improving health and the quality of healthcare. This study examined the relationship between personal health literacy and perceived patient-centered communication quality (PPCQ). Until recently, many health literacy studies were completed from the patient and nurse perspective, while few focused on the physician perspective, specifically the primary care physician. The purpose of this study was to provide insight into the health literacy knowledge and education of primary care physicians and determine the association, if any, between physicians’ perceptions of patients’ limited health literacy and physicians’ use of health literacy communication techniques. The knowledge, attitudes, and practice (KAP) framework directed this study. This framework posits that knowledge informs or influences attitudes, which leads to practices. Health literacy has been recognized as a vital issue in the self-care management of persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of functional, communicative, and critical health literacy dimensions on positive and negative attitudes toward health decision making. The transtheoretical model of health behavior change (TTM) provided the theoretical framework to explain this association. A culturally-adapted survey was used in this cross-sectional study to measure health literacy dimensions, positive and negatives attitudes toward health decision making, and other factors in 100 Puerto Ricans living with HIV/AIDS.
