The contemporary healthcare institution operates on the philosophy of patient-centered care [PCC], growing from the medical culture of the past: care centered around an omniscient provider, defining the patient by their illness versus their identities. While this widely practiced philosophy succeeds in meeting the chief complaint and needs of a patient, it neglects to care for the patient in the context of his or her broader life constituents: the family and loved ones. Patient-centered care is a framework for providing medical services in a humanistic, patient-focused manner. Although there are many proposed dimensions, it is simply the perspective of caring for the patient as a person with psychosocial needs, not just a diagnosis. Extensive literature review was completed to gain understanding of the application of patient-centered care in undergraduate medical education, as well as the evidence behind implementing patient-centered methods. A large proportion of American adults lack health insurance, due to job loss and a wide variety of other issues. With the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and the Supreme Court decision affirming its constitutional legality, the availability of healthcare is set to increase in the near future. This honors thesis addresses the fit, or lack of fit, between the ACA provisions and the needs of the currently uninsured. My study involved ten interviews with patients at a free clinic for the uninsured in Syracuse, NY, and an interview with the Commissioner of Health from Onondaga County. For …
