The Department of Health and Human Services mandated that all Health InsurancePortability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) covered entities implement The International Classification of Diseases tenth edition (ICD-10) on October 1, 2015. The United States was the last industrialized country to move to the new coding system. Today, the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification is more than 35 years old and there is a great need for the United States of America to implement the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision. The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision has two parts: The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification for diagnosis codes and The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Procedure Coding System for inpatient procedure codes.
