The number of immigrants in the United States has recently been increasing significantly. Immigrants may experience some worse health outcomes than natives, due to substantial legal and socioeconomic barriers. Many immigration-related disparities in health behavior and health care utilization still remain unexplored. This dissertation comprises of 3 independent studies examining such disparities across immigration status, including (1) E-cigarette use and acculturation effects; (2) Cancer-related office-based medical provider visits among cancer patients; and (3) Potentially preventable emergency department visits.

BACKGROUND: Medicaid coverage among adults is often characterized by discontinuity – loss of Medicaid coverage, and churning, or entering and exiting Medicaid – over short durations. Little is known about the impact of having discontinuous Medicaid coverage on access to care, preventive care, pharmacotherapy, primary care, and hospitalizations, among non-elderly adults with cardiovascular disease (CVD) or high-risk conditions.

Research has identified the fact that race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, education level, geographic location, help seeking behaviors, and experiences of discrimination are associated with health outcomes. In addition, attitudes towards providers can also help determine health outcomes. The transgender community experiences barriers to health care services and therefore their overall health is affected. In Canada, there have been large improvements in the management of chronic diseases attributed to obesity such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol since the 1990s. How this trend has impacted the health care utilization patterns of obese individuals relative to normal weight individuals is unknown in Canada. This study examined health care utilization across categories of body mass index in Canada during the time period 1996 to 2010 using the 1996-7 National Population Health Survey and the 2000-1 and 2009-10 Canadian Community Health Surveys.
