Asthma causes substantial public health burden. An enhanced understanding of asthma burden, asthma course and identification of intervenable risk factor is warranted.

The objectives of this research were to: 1) examine the age, period and cohort effects on asthma prevalence among Canadian adults during 1994–2011 (manuscript one); 2) identify the trajectories of asthma exacerbation and their predictors in children with incident asthma (manuscript two); and 3) examine the effect of maternal gestational diabetes mellitus on the risk of asthma in offspring (manuscript three).

The objective of this doctoral research was two-fold: 1) to estimate inequalities in social determinants of health (SDoH), health-related quality of life, and substance use among women living with HIV (WLWH) compared to the general population of women; and 2) to assess the impact of the SDoH clusters on illicit drug use and heavy alcohol drinking among WLWH. Effective diabetes management provided in primary care has the potential to reduce hospitalizations and mortality. To improve diabetes management, a Diabetes Management Incentive (DMI) was introduced by the Ontario government for family physicians practicing in patient enrolment models. This thesis has three main objectives: 1) review the literature on the association between financial incentives for diabetes care and diabetes-related hospitalizations and mortality; 2) and 3) examine the impact of DMI on: diabetes-related services, diabetes-related hospitalizations, diabetes-related hospitalization costs, and mortality risk in Ontario. Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) emerged in the human population shortly after the turn of the 19th century. Distribution of HIV-1 across the globe over the past 30–35 years can be traced to founder events with primordial HIV strains from sub-Saharan Africa. Even considering the burden of HIV in Africa, our knowledge of HIV-1 disease is still largely limited to subtype B HIV-1, a strain responsible for 3 million infections in North America and Europe as compared to the 33 million that are infected with HIV-1 subtypes A, C, D, and circulating and unique recombinant forms.
