Shift to shift report in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is an interaction between nurses to share patient information and prepare the next caregiver to provide safe, high quality care to their vulnerable patients. An examination of the research identifies that there are multiple factors that can have a negative effect on the shift to shift report or handoff, creating the potential to not only harm the patient, but create dissatisfaction for both nurses and families as well.
