ABSTRACT
Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, the incidence of which is growing as the population ages. This disease is a significant cause of mortality and morbidity and is associated with comorbidities such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Current AF treatment guidelines recommend identifying possible reversible causes of AF such as OSA. The Atrial Fibrillation Quality Care Program is an outpatient transition clinic designed to provide individualized evidence-based care to patients with a new diagnosis of AF. Aims: To provide a review of literature to guide cultural competency in healthcare focusing on ethnopharmacology.
Methods: An integrative review completed using four databases including Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed that covered the years between 2000 and 2018, and used the key words “Ethno pharmacology” and “Cultural Competency”. Ultimately, 12 studies meeting inclusion criteria were selected for analysis.
Findings: Most of the ethno pharmacology research applies to African Americans, Asians, and Whites, fewer studies targeted Hispanics. Asians require less psychotic drugs dosage, White individuals had a better antihypertensive response to β-blockers than Black individuals. Additionally, Whites responded …
