Abstract

This article describes the result of an academic-practice partnership between a School of Nursing (SON) and a University Medical Center (UMC) for the purpose of promoting BSN education in response to the Institute of Medicine’s recommendation that 80% of RNs hold a baccalaureate degree or higher by 2020. The mutually beneficial partnership worked together to offer a pilot online RN-BSN nursing program, increase the number of BSNs in the workforce, and to collect information from RN-BSN students returning to school about their challenges, recommendations for future programs, and why they were interested in returning to school. The BSN graduates …

Faith Community Nursing In Community/Public Health Education: A Positive Student Nursing Experience, Pamela Preston

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing

Faith Community Nursing sites were recently integrated into a Community/Public Health Nursing course at a traditional Catholic baccalaureate college in New England. Junior and senior nursing students were randomly assigned to spend 10 clinical days at a site for their clinical experience. The students planned, participated in, and conducted diverse nursing and educational activities. At the end of the rotation, students completed evaluations rating the experience. The evaluations indicated that the clinical experience was positive. The diverse activities including support, health promotion, screening, and education in addition to the spiritual dimension allowed the students to participate in true holistic nursing …

Problems Experienced In The Second And Third Months After Discharge From A Heart Failure-Related Hospitalization, Joan S. Grant, Lucinda J. Graven

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

The purpose of this study was to identify high-priority problems experienced by individuals during the second and third month after discharge from an acute care facility for heart failure. This descriptive, exploratory study, an extension of a previous analysis that examined high-priority problems in the first month, comprised 19 participants who were assigned to an intervention group that received a randomized, 12-week-pilot coping partnership (COPE-HF) intervention. A trained research nurse provided the intervention, and participants used a standard list to identify high-priority heart failure-related problems. Quantitative and content data analysis was conducted. While the highest-priority problem continued to be managing …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Clinical practice are an important component of undergraduate nursing education and involve clinical nurse educators who are primarily responsible for teaching student nurses in that context. Twelve nurse educators who taught in the clinical arena participated in this grounded theory study. These participants taught in a number of undergraduate nursing programs in a large metropolitan city in Ontario, Canada. The results revealed several insights and in this article the authors focus on one in particular: the various intersecting forms of knowledge that nurse educator participants brought to their teaching practice. The results from this study provide a more detailed understanding …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Nursing education programs are designed to respond to the evolving requirements of nursing practice while supporting student transformation in becoming a nurse. Students in these programs often refer to them as academically challenging and stressful. The aim of this study was to understand the experience of nursing students compared to the general university student population and specifically, to explore if nursing students are perceiving more stress than students in other university programs. This study arises from an earlier study conducted annually for four years at a western Canadian university following the method referred to as the “Harvard Assessment Seminar” (Light, …

Family-centered care (FCC) is defined as an approach to care coordination founded in collaborative partnerships between healthcare providers, patients and their family caregivers. Amid the enthusiasm for FCC in the pediatric setting, opportunities have been identified to operationalize the engagement of pediatric, adolescent and young adult patients and their caregivers into decision making that translates not only to their healthcare, but also to the context in which care is provided, as well as the research informing their care. At a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, the Children’s Cancer Hospital was instrumental in designing and implementing patient and family engagement …

Curriculum evaluation is an essential and complex activity intended to foster understanding of how teaching-learning practices serve to meet educational goals. This position paper provides a retrospective from the authors' lived experience of one multi-institutional collaborative nursing programs' history of curriculum evaluation and scholarship growth over twenty-five years. Key themes include an overview of collaborative curriculum evaluation underpinned by three philosophical perspectives, the influence of accreditation and re-mandated post-secondary institutions on scholarship development, an affirmation of curriculum evaluation as a form of knowledge development as supported by Boyer’s model of scholarship, and the development of scholarship expertise across collaborative partners …
