The maternal mortality rate (MMR) is unconscionably high around the world, with women in low to middle income countries (LMICs) disproportionately passing away from potentially preventable causes. While this is a complicated and multifaceted problem, anesthesia has been identified as a contributing cause of death. From the moment the parturient enters the operating room, the anesthetist is responsible for their well-being. This integrative review was designed to further explore relationship between anesthesia and the MMR in LMICs. Spirituality is a concept that is recently getting increased attention. Often misunderstood or confused with other concepts such as religion or culture, it has a broader meaning and transcends culture, religion, and geographic boundaries. The importance of spirituality in patient care remains controversial amongst providers. An integrative review of the literature was conducted to examine the impact of spirituality on health outcomes. Serum troponin level is one lab value that is used in early detection and evaluation of cardiovascular disease. American life, as we know it, is changing. Disasters are increasing in frequency. Over the past decade, more than two million people has lost their lives. Nationally, nurses are not familiar with concepts of disaster nursing and emergency management. Literature demonstrates that nurses lack the knowledge, skills, and ability to respond adequately in a disaster. This quality improvement project evaluated the effectiveness of an evidence based disaster awareness program specifically designed for nurses who work in the emergency department. Venous thromboembolism events (VTE) are one of nine hospital-acquired events monitored by organizations, such as The Joint Commission, that are considered preventable when the proper safeguards are in place. Practice recommendations by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and The American College of Chest Physicians include adhering to pharmacological and nonpharmacological therapy for at risk patients. In patients with contraindications to pharmacological prophylaxis, mechanical therapy provides adequate protection against VTE when used correctly.
