The risk for professional burnout has become commonly recognized and in the past several years has been a focus of research efforts. Nursing is one of the professions generating a high level of stress which results in burnout.

The purpose of this study was to test the effects of an intervention program for nurses who felt they were experiencing burnout. Nursing burnout was defined as a chronic condition of stress among nurses, which leads to a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of personal accomplishment. With the liberalization of abortion laws by the Supreme Court in 1973, American women have been able to obtain therapeutic abortions in hospitals and out-patient clinics in ever increasing numbers. With the increased number of women seeking abortions the medical field has responded with abortion procedures that are safe and relatively quick. With the speed doctors use to perform the procedure, many women may wish to take advantage of the medically safer method of abortion under local anesthesia. The purpose of this study was to help nursing develop a comprehensive care system for patients in selected emergency departments. To develop such a system, it was necessary to know the characteristics of and the health needs of that population.

The problem of this study was to describe the characteristics and health needs of patients in selected emergency departments.

It was the purpose of this survey to determine what constitutes effective and ineffective clinical instruction from the student's viewpoint, and to make the findings available. The descriptive survey method using the critical incident technique was used as the method of research. A critical incident report form was constructed as a tool for gathering the data. There were 117 students of nursing who submitted 166 incidents; 52 per cent were of effective instruction and 48 per cent of ineffective instruction.

It was the purpose of this study to investigate reasons for the choice of a first position by graduates from diploma programs in nursing. This included factors motivating the choice, the time of choice, and reasons for liking and disliking clinical areas. Questionnaires were mailed to 756 graduates of the class of 1961 from twenty-three representative schools. Approximately 46 percent were returned completed.

Major findings were as follows:

The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether a combination of grade point averages from high school and one year of prescribed courses in a liberal arts college could be used as a tool in the prediction of scholastic success in two selected schools of nursing.

A descriptive survey of grades and test results was done on 121 students from these schools. The nursing school CPA and results from the state board test pool were used as criteria of success. Total GPA's from secondary school and college, and grades in English, science and non-science subjects were the predictors.

On the assumption that there is less turnover and optimum performance among employees who receive a high level of Job satisfaction, this study was undertaken to obtain data that administration could use in evaluating Job satisfaction among ancillary personnel.

The normative-survey was the method chosen and a standardized tool, the S.R.A, Employee Inventory, developed by the Science Research Associates of the University of Chicago, was employed for collecting the data. This study was conducted to find out if the giving of alternate hot-and-cold treatments to the chest following abdominal hysterectomy would result in measurable benefits in improved patient comfort and rate of recovery. The White Memorial Hospital was selected as the control area and the Loma Linda Sanitarium and Hospital was selected as the experimental area.

Statement of the Problem: the purpose of this study was to find out the current faculty-student ratio in the medical-surgical area in collegiate school of nursing which were fully accredited by the National League for Nursing and the number of students with which instructors felt comfortable in their clinical instructions.

Statement of Problem:

Would more men enter and remain in nursing, if the Seventh-day Adventist denomination would recognize the professional skills of qualified men nurses and utilize them on the same basis on which they utilize the professional skills of a qualitied women nurses?

Method:

The normative-survey method was employed in this study, to collect the necessary data. Two groups of men were used in the survey; men nurses who graduated from Seventh-day Adventist schools of nursing between the periods 1950 to 1955, and college men representing the two lower division classes.
