Care coordination is the deliberate organization of patient care activities between two or more participants (including the patient) involved in a person’s care to facilitate the appropriate delivery of health care services. Organizing care involves the marshalling of personnel and other resources needed to carry out all required patient care activities. It is often managed by the exchange of information among participants responsible for different aspects of care. With an estimated 85% of individuals with Spina Bifida (SB) surviving to adulthood, SB specific care coordination guidelines are warranted. Care coordination (also described as case management services) is a process that …

Improving Quality Of Care Through Discharge Planning, Maria Pasillas
Master's Projects and Capstones
Providing good education for the new mother is key to improving the quality of care for both mom and baby. Since nurses are frontline health care providers who perform the most postpartum education, it is imperative they work to improve discharge education so information provided is consistent, appropriate, and evidence based (Suplee et al., 2016).
The aim of this project is to improve the discharge planning process of a local community hospital utilizing evidence-based research (EBR) with the intent to increase patient satisfaction scores in care transitions to above 65% within 3 months.
The community hospital is a 122-bed acute …

An Extensive Literature Review On Neonatal Pain Assessment & Management, Bailey Bishop
An Extensive Literature Review On Neonatal Pain Assessment & Management, Bailey Bishop
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Neonatal pain assessment and management is a field requiring much more research. This literature review outlines the current climate of neonatal pain assessment, compares a variety of neonatal pain scales on validity and clinical utility, and implications for how neonatal pain management can be improved. Neonates experience pain to the same degree, if not more, than everyone else. Unmanaged pain during the neonatal period leads to adverse health outcomes. In order to prevent these atrocities from this vulnerable population, NICU pain assessing needs to become the standard of care.
Effect Of A Self-Care And Self-Awareness Education Program On Resilience To Burnout And Depression In Clinically Experienced Nursing Students, Andrew Taylor
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose was to examine the effect of a self-care educational intervention on nursing student resilience and thus the potential for compassion fatigue, depersonalization, burnout, depression, and inadequate self-care. A one-group pretest-posttest research design was applied to a convenience sample of 104 nursing students near the end of their last semester in a baccalaureate nursing program. The measurements were demographics, a psychometric resilience scale, program evaluation, and reflection question. The intervention was a standardized, intensive 30 min training program on the high degree of stress and burnout nurses face and the core self-care methods that can promote resilience to these …
An Altitude Adjustment: Implementing A Clinical Practice Guideline In The Newborn Nursery At Moderate Altitude, Leeann Blaskowsky
An Altitude Adjustment: Implementing A Clinical Practice Guideline In The Newborn Nursery At Moderate Altitude, Leeann Blaskowsky
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: All infants undergo many changes at birth, but for some, the transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life presents more of a challenge, especially at altitude. Despite continuing research, neonatal prescribing guidelines for oxygen therapy remain ambiguous.
PICOT: For term and late preterm infants requiring oxygen beyond transition, does a clinical practice guideline compared to practice without a guideline, provide consistent, evidence-based care, support the mother-infant dyad, and impact nursing perceptions over a six-week pilot period?
Evidence: Birth at moderate altitude presents the newly born with less oxygen than those delivered at sea level. Several studies …
Childbirth And Control Behind Bars: A Descriptive Qualitative Analysis Of The Maternal Perception Of Control In Women Who Have Given Birth While Incarcerated, Lorin Raines
Dissertations
The perception of control during childbirth has been widely studied in various setting and groups. Many factors have been found to aid or impede the perception of control for birthing women. Significance of that perception of control during childbirth has also been measured in past studies. This descriptive qualitative study advances the knowledge of the perception of control during childbirth and examines a population that has thus far been excluded. Four previously incarcerated women participated in semi-structured interviews about their experience of giving birth while incarcerated and their perception of control during that time. The women were from diverse backgrounds …

Doctoral Projects
Developing interdisciplinary teamwork and patient communication skills are essential for the student registered nurse anesthetist (SRNA) to provide quality patient care when administering epidural anesthesia. The synthesis of the evidence revealed limited available information on simulation use for SRNA epidural administration and collaboration. This doctoral project examined the effectiveness of learning through traditional simulation to enhance communication and collaboration between the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and the Nurse Anesthesia Program (NAP) students. The BSN and NAP students were provided with a simulation environment to care for a laboring patient while improving patient safety and quality outcomes. The project …

Supporting Postnatal Women With Opioid Use Disorder Treated With Medication Avoidance Therapy, Lea Ann Quave
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent data in 28 U.S. states revealed that opioid use during pregnancy had increased by four times since 2014, going from 1.5 to 6.5 per 1,000 admissions. The use of opioids during pregnancy is dangerous to the mother and developing fetus, greatly increasing the risk for maternal death, miscarriage, and premature birth. The increase in the number of women with opioid abuse disorder (OUD) is reflected by a fivefold increase of infants born with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), a withdrawal syndrome from opioids. Corresponding with U.S. trends, a community hospital in the Texas Gulf Coast region has seen an increase …
Couplet Care, Melanie Husk
Couplet Care, Melanie Husk
Scholars Week
Abstract
In many recent studies, maternity units in hospitals have been making the transition from traditional separate care for the mother and baby to couplet care for the mother and baby. (Brenneman, 2014; Abney-Roberts, 2012; Backus, 2017) Couplet care is family-centered care in which the mother and the baby stay together from childbirth until discharge. (Emory-Decatur, 2019) Studies have shown that this form of care has many benefits for both the mother and the baby. Parents become more educated on how to care for their newborn and infants gain the foundation for how they will develop socially, emotionally, and behaviorally. …

Dancing During Labor: Are Women Down To Boogie?, Drew A. Horter, Kayla Heslin, Marie Forgie, Emily Malloy, Jessica J. F. Kram
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Recent social media trends have demonstrated increased interest in dancing during the final weeks of pregnancy and labor. However, there is limited evidence about dancing during labor and its impact on labor pain and duration as well as patient satisfaction. Before conducting a prospective study, given that enrollment is often challenging, our feasibility study aimed to assess the willingness of pregnant women to participate in a future study evaluating low-impact dance during labor. We anonymously surveyed a convenience sample of English-speaking/reading pregnant women who presented for prenatal care at 1 of 3 clinics from June 2019 to July 2019. Questions …
Accuracy Of Rn Visual Quantification Of Emesis Volumes In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Stephen Stoever
Accuracy Of Rn Visual Quantification Of Emesis Volumes In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Stephen Stoever
Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects
An important component of nursing assessment of feeding tolerance in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for both low-risk and high-risk babies, is the quantification of emesis volumes. While some nurses attempt to weigh the items saturated in emesis in order to quantify volume loss (QEV), there is no or limited consistency in this practice across nurses in this unit. Rather, volumes are “best-guessed” or estimated (EEV) and reported to the practitioner for decision-making. Often feed advances are paused or limited due to perceived feeding intolerance connected to emesis events in neonates.
For this project, 158 NICU nurses at a …

Barriers To Pregnancy Healthcare As Perceived By Hispanic Women In The Northern Midwest, Anna King
Barriers To Pregnancy Healthcare As Perceived By Hispanic Women In The Northern Midwest, Anna King
ELAIA
Background This study explored the barriers to pregnancy health care experienced by Hispanic women. Research has shown that Hispanic patients are less likely to have adequate health insurance coverage compared to the white population in the United States and frequently face communication barriers in health care, as interpretive services are underutilized. These barriers may cause the Hispanic population to delay seeking health care and can lead to poor health outcomes. This is especially a problem in pregnancy health care, where prompt prenatal care is essential in ensuring a healthy pregnancy and positive health outcomes in both mother and baby.

Maternal And Newborn Care During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Kenya: Re-Contextualising The Community Midwifery Model, Rachel Kimani, Rose Maina, Constance Shumba, Sheila Shaibu
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Peripartum deaths remain significantly high in low- and middle-income countries, including Kenya. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted essential services, which could lead to an increase in maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity. Furthermore, the lockdowns, curfews, and increased risk for contracting COVID-19 may affect how women access health facilities. SARS-CoV-2 is a novel coronavirus that requires a community-centred response, not just hospital-based interventions. In this prolonged health crisis, pregnant women deserve a safe and humanised birth that prioritises the physical and emotional safety of the mother and the baby. There is an urgent need for innovative strategies to prevent the …
Empowering Nurses Of Minority In The Face Of Incivility And Bullying: Through The Lens Of Phenomenology, Corrine Floyd
Empowering Nurses Of Minority In The Face Of Incivility And Bullying: Through The Lens Of Phenomenology, Corrine Floyd
Dissertations
Abstract
Up to 85% of nurses have reported exposure to incivility in the workplace (Hunt & Marini, 2012). The often-subtle nature of incivility toward nurses in a minority population may partially explain why it remains a problem. Healthcare organizations realize the need for civility to counter the high turnover rate, staff shortages, and low job satisfaction reported by nurses, but lack understanding of how nurses of a minority population perceive incivility and bullying. This study aimed to answer the research question how do nurses with minority representation experience incivility and bullying versus empowerment in the workplace? A descriptive phenomenological design …

Contraceptive Methods In The United States: The Question Of Abortive Mechanisms, Tara Ferenczy
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis reviews the many methods of contraception available in the United States. Although society’s understanding of women’s health has become a major topic, there is still a significant deficit of information regarding how the accessible methods affect women’s bodies, specifically reproductive tissue. The thesis analyzes numerous contraceptive options focusing specifically on the mechanisms of action to determine whether options have abortifacient properties so that readers may develop educated opinions regarding medical and ethical uses. Information involving strengths and limitations of each technique and the effects on both the female body and the reproductive material assist in understanding the process …

Perinatal Anxiety And Depression During The Covid 19 Pandemic, Helen Xumin Chen, Nancy Selix, Marcianna Nosek
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Abstract
The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak places perinatal women at higher risk of developing anxiety and depression. Uncertainty, fear, and confusion in medical, social, economic, occupational and political aspects of life in the US add to existing stressors that perinatal women experience. To optimize the quality of perinatal care during the pandemic, appropriate mental health interventions must be implemented to prevent and alleviate perinatal anxiety and depression and improve maternal and infant outcomes. Measures include increased screening, non-pharmacologic and/or pharmacologic interventions and the use of telehealth for care delivery.
