Abstract

The aim of this project is to improve the care for patients experiencing pregnancy loss in the emergency department (ED). Objectives are to enhance understanding of staff about the patients’ experience and their knowledge on how to best care for emotional needs, thus improving quality of patient care, work satisfaction, knowledge, confidence and comfort levels, while decreasing experienced stress. The project was implemented in a midsized community hospital with 117 beds, which discharged 74 patients with “interrupted pregnancies” over the previous year from the ED. The purpose of this research is to determine if parents and caregivers are educated about SBS, the incidence of SBS decreases. The subjects of this study are parents of newborns born at Pennsylvania Hospital. The experimental group will consist of 50 parents who will receive supplemental information in regards to preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome. The comparison group will consist of 50 parents who will receive no further education from the one received prior to discharge of the hospital. A new vaccine to prevent human papillomavirus infection was approved in 2006 in the United States (U.S.). Uptake of the vaccine has been less than optimal (CDC, 2010c). New venues for promoting vaccine acceptance are needed (Middleman & Tung, 2010). The goal of this capstone clinical project is to create an evidence based toolkit for use by school nurses in educating female adolescents, parents, communities and other healthcare providers about the HPV vaccine.
